Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

And also, let's not kid ourselves...no one cared about the AE86 much before Initial D gave it a nostalgic explosion of fame. And even today, you're hard pressed to find a true AE86 without a shitton of mods done to it.

The AE86 has been well liked since it was released, i.e. the late 80's early 90's. The manga was based on it's cult following, not the other way around.

Also, I see quite a few AE86es on craigslist, more often than not with few to no mods. Some are asking crazy prices because of their popularity, but others are just old and beat.

I didn't say it wasn't liked. I said it wasn't cared about as much as it is today. It was exactly as you described, a cult following, which is something the car does not have today...it has full blown fandom now.

And yeah, you'll find some clean examples of the car, but there aren't that many. Most of them were tainted and molested.

You said nobody cared about it, and that's just flat-out wrong. They've been getting due respect for decades.

And there are plenty of them.

This is just this weekend, too. One of them is a ruined drift car, the rest are fine. You'll see an after market exhaust or rims, but none of them are "tainted" to the point of being worthless. The truth is that while many people might be car enthusiasts, few will turn the wrench on their own car.

Way too many SR5s and base DXs. There are two GTS', and one of them is expensive and heavily modified.

Please do something about those rims.

I am not actually going to buy it, I am joking.

I'd love an AE86, but when it comes to old Toyotas I'm more interested in importing an old Soarer

Everyone is caught up in the R32 Skylines being legalized when there are so many other handsome 80's cars to think about.

I would love if all they imported were the 4A-GEs, but you make due with what you can get.

Super slick.

Who wants a terrible photo of me flogging a 911SC on a track?!

60EU08n.jpg

My friend has a new smartphone, how he got such an incredibly low resolution shot I have no idea. The track is Waterford Hills, beautiful weather today, a lot of cars, a lot of runs and a lot of fun. Apparently they do an open track day every month for $180, which is a hell of a deal.

I went off track just once, and that barely. The 911 can only tolerate so much trail braking before it decides it's time to fight back. No harm done though.

Because they are wide angle so it has to make a tiny crop when you zoom.
It then desperately tries to hide noise, causing smudges, and sharpen the image, causing halos.

More on topic I'm really jealous. I love those old Porsches. When I saw the ice driving in an old 911 rally car video with Chris Harris I thought it could be fun and Sweden isn't too far away. Then I saw the prices...
The price per person is dependent on a number of key areas: the time of booking, size of the group, number of cars required and the number of days on the ice. Prices are from £1,750 per person per day, based on 2 people sharing a car.

Oh yeah I guess he did zoom in a bunch, too bad.

And really, if you were to rent out a classic 911 for racing what would you charge?

Hi AutoGaf, well, this post has been in the works for a long time. Been searching for the right car for almost a year, and dreaming about this for much longer. Was a long road to get here, lots of hard work, and many long hours. Bought this a couple weeks back, been raining cats & dogs ever since. Got the car opticoated more than a week ago, and today, the weather finally cleared up so I could do a good wash.

Here she is, in all her glory, my 911 Turbo:

Turbo looks great. Love the choice of wheels. What year is it? Looks like...maybe 2011? Spoiler 911 is the only way to have a 911. Adding to the car porn, the latest addition to the family:

Thanks. The wheels actually came with the car, I originally wanted to switch to stock, but I'm actually warming up to these. Its a 2007 actually, which is the same body except for the tail lights.

Nice 4 series btw, always liked the profile of that car. The seats look sick!

Nice. A.D. Tramontana R. I bet that Spanish Stallion is a blast to drive.

Went to LA for the weekend.

Saw a Veyrion parked in Beverly Hills with some weird orange 2 tone color.

It's a very big car in person. Not my thing but cool nonetheless.

Tons of Ferrari/Bentley/rolls/Maserati all over BH. They all love to speed off the line and them slam on the brakes when they inevitably hit famed LA traffic.

This one?

If so, there's a story behind it. It's parked there all the time and never moves.

is this thread only for super fancy cars?

I need to get a car, budget around $15k max. I found the Honda Insight and I like the 45mpg. I found a 2012 model nearby for $14.5k. Anything similar I should be looking at from other manufacturers?

I'm original from LA but moved to the bay area, but I occasionally visit LA...things have changed a lot. I thought a lot of nice cars in the bay area, but LA gots a ton a of them now, I'm always surprise in the amount of nice cars I see in LA.

It's not racing. Probably a great experience, but it's much more expensive than renting a supercar around some tracks or even an annual pass around the ring.

The obvious comparison is the Prius, but it looks to be a lot more expensive in that model year. I'd recommend a test drive if you aren't used to CVTs or lack of hp/torque, but it looks like decent car that should be able to hit 50 mpg.
I've only tried an Auris Hybrid (Prius drivetrain), but it was a 30 min trip when I was in a rush to reach a plane so I couldn't see what it was like in my normal driving style. The car seemed to respond fairly well on the highway when I floored it, but the lack of diesel torque that I'm used to meant a lot more noise. With a steady foot though it should be very quiet.

Insights are decent. If you're getting a 2012 for that cheap that's a good deal.

Try looking at the Honda Fit, it's not a hybrid but it's very fuel efficient and can possibly be had cheaper.

The Insight is also at my friend's dealership. I'm gonna ask him what kind of discount he could give me.

I have no car buying experience... generally do people talk the dealership down on the listed price of a used car? Do I have wiggle room?

You can look at www.nadaguides.com to get an estimate of what you should be paying for the used car in your area. The dealer might always price it higher due to other reasons (high demand for the model in your area, low availability, etc) but it will at least give you a figure you can have in mind.

Thanks.

The dealer is selling for $14,416 and that site says the price for clean retail is $14,100.

just gonna ask my friend at the dealer what discount he could give me.

Is it a Honda CPO car? If it isn't, ask your friend why not and how much extra would it cost to get the certification.

When dealerships take a car in for trade, they go waaaaaaay under what the trade-in value of the car is according to NADA and KBB. They most likely paid $11.5K-12K for it. If you don't want to haggle too hard, tell them you'll take it for $13.5K. They should have no problem taking $1K off the car.

Oh pish posh, modern 911s are gentle little lambs compared to their brutish, neanderthal ancestors.

And by "gentle little lambs" I mean "unbelievably fast but stable road-monsters".

Yep. Put enough electronics and move the engine further forward and you've got a really nice car.

Granadier

Is currently on Stage 1: Denial regarding the service game future
Yeah but there's just something so charming about driving a car that's hell-bent on killing you.

I was referring to the 911 directly and the improvements they've done. The engine has been moved further forward then the older models so it has more weight over the rear axles instead of hanging so far off the back end. Also the traction and stability control works wonders for them.

But yes, having a car that actively is trying to kill you increases the rush while driving.

Oh I know. I'm just one of those strange people that lament the "taming" of the 911, even though I recognize that it is objectively better now.
