What I found so engaging about the show was the character interactions that were brought together, explored and deepened because of food. Sure you can get super reductive about it and just say the show is about a bunch young girls and women eating food but it is much more than that it you bother to pay attention.

It is through the eating and sharing of food with friends and family the helps Ryo come to terms with the death of her grandmother which is a always present issue. It also helps her get over her loneliness of having to live in a apartment by herself with her parents travelling aboard.

Through Kirin and Shiina you get to see Ryo experience a sort of alternate family life through the time she spends with Kirin at her apartment and the time she spends with Shina's family as their mansion.

I'm not going to go on and on but I admit I fouding the show to be extremely touching and sincere about Ryo's relationships and her relationship to her late grandmother. There was even very touching moment in which Ryo's aunt tell her that her mother was actually a terrible fucking cook when they were kids and used to give them horrible boxed lunched and she learned to be a better cook when taking care of Ryo. That goes beyond just watching girls eat food, at least for me it did.

I didn't find that the show presented that in any sort of insightful or emotionally touching manner. The notion of cooking or doing X for others has been done to death in anime as a medium and so I don't find that concept particularly novel. In addition to that the actual execution of that theme from what I saw of the first four episodes was largely flat and unmoving. The direction didn't evoke any sort of emotion from me other than apathy.

The character interactions themselves were certainly not entertaining enough for me to sit through 12 episodes that largely centered around them.

Pretty good, I guess, but I have a couple of comments:

1. They are using human-sized power armor, not giant robots.

2. You know, I have a better idea: why not watch both?

Otherwise, this would be like saying people shouldn't watch The Big O because Batman: The Animated Series exists.I honestly appreciate telling people to go back and watch the classics, but I don't think that makes keeping up with newer shows that might carry even a fraction of the same spirit a mutually exclusive proposition. That said, I am getting more of a Tiger and Bunny vibe than a pure Patlabor one here.(which is still fine by me because both were good series)

I guess I can edit it as to not sound too pessimistic towards it, but I highly doubt that this show featuring CG mecha action is going to legitimately surpass what is regarded as an old classic with 2D mecha action, just saying.

So uhhh the show just took a complete 180 in tone? Not gonna say I don't dig it now. I guess episodes 1-12 were just there to introduce the characters while the real show begins now.

I think it was actually a localization issue and they translated it as megadeuce so people didn't know any better?

Mushishi Special: Hihamukage

Premise was more of the same (which isn't a bad thing) but I didn't find the character conflict to be all that compelling (which isn't a good thing.) Something about Ginko's design felt off too. Might just be but facial features seemed a little more harsh which gave him something of an older look. Not like I can remember for certain offhand, but thought they felt softer in the first season which created ambiguity about his age and added to the ethereal quality he typically exudes.

1. It's been confirmed as power armor and there is also a scene in the second PV where the lead gets suited up all Iron Man style.

2. I don't think it will surpass Patlabor, but then again very few things ever have. Dai-Guard certainly didn't and it was still a cool little show.

Just watched Macross Flashback 2012. Really poignant send-off to the series, particularly the Angel's Paints sequences, which depict Minmei leaving Earth behind on the Megaroad with Misa and Hikaru.

All in all a fitting sendoff to one of the most beautiful animated films ever.

Castle Town Dandelion 1-12

You know what, this was better than I expected.
Its not as good as something like nozaki-kun or d-frag but its good and surprisingly earnest.

There's a proper ending with good character development to most of the character.

Idk what I can say without going super in depth about it, but I'll just say that its a shame that no one really watched this or even remembers it exists.

I know that the synopsis sounds boring and stupid, but trust me when I say that the execution is better than the synopsis entails.

I liked it.


Edit: I really need to figure out which character to draw for my avatar this season.... hmmm...

Did I just miss it all or was no one really talking about Koufuku Graffiti all year? Unless it burns and crashes after this, I really don't understand.

I like it. It's pretty, especially the food. Now that is what i call foodporn. the show focus on the social aspect of eating like its first episode, adding more cast along the way. It is a good show to introduce viewer to some of common culinary in Japan. A bento for sakura viewing, a cold soba running through bamboo, omurice, etc. You can easily found the recipes for all the food found in this show.

It's definitely more than cute girl eating food and getting foodgasm.

It is a good SoL anime.

Am I supposed to feel sympathetic to detective Shiba? Because wow is he a shallow idiot. This episode's story needs more time to breathe because so far I just don't get this guy. Also I think the time jumps is to the detriment of this episode. I was fine with it in episode 1 because I am guessing that it was used as setting up a central mystery of the show and in episode 2 it was used to punch you in the gut about the consequences of naive decisions. In this episode? All it did was to make me annoyed at what a stupid character Shiba is because I have absolutely no knowledge what happened to this guy in between the years or what happened to the country. Either this story needed more time to develop or it needed to be placed way later in airing time for this to work. Finally, was it just me or was that scene where

Mieko runs off, Shiba follows her, he and she talk, and then she jumps in the water

done super awkwardly? Especially the part where

after she runs away, then it cuts to where she is absolutely still.

There is something especially off about that particular transition.

On the plus side seeing Mr. Jaguar's power was pretty cool.

Maybe he is? It feels like they're going for a Player A / Player B thing here, where Shiba is the shadow second player to Jiro. But at the same time there just isn't enough development to form a strong impression. To be fair, Jiro's pretty dumb too, and they both think they're smarter and more justified than they ever are, so there's that.
