Most Gonzo shows are either liked or disliked. Kaleido Star is the only show that is universally praised.
When I saw the Goddess in Speed Grapher descending for the first time, they took that scene straight out of Sora Naegino's acrobatics

That sounds excellent.
To clarify, I'm not wishing for the show to hold back on revelations about the nature of the world in perpetuity, but I could have probably handled another episode's worth of content just soaking in the world.
For me, a separate but related problem is that the developments in the narrative have progressed slightly too fast.
It feels like we've literally just met this person 'with no emotions', and by the end of the 2nd episode she's already getting emotional? That's not a lot of build up to give any pay off.
Season late but I basically binge watched Made in Abyss over the last few days.
Holy... fuck.... Anime of the year for me so far. The presentation, suspense, wonder all came together in a dark, yet beautiful and sublime experience that no other anime has done for me in a long time. Admittedly I have not watched many other series this year.

Also add Koe no Katachi to the mix. Although Grave of the Fireflies might have already destroyed him at that point.

Lots of people seem to be coming in here 'late' to the Made in Abyss 'party'. For a series not based on a particularly well-known manga, the word of mouth appears to be very strong. Did anyone even make an Off-Topic thread for the show?
I find it's success interesting because, despite all the shows' strengths I would have trouble directly recommending it to a friend because of all the questionable content that the show engages (and occasionally lavishes) in. But that's clearly just me, because the 'word' appears to be spreading about this show.

but primarily amongst the already anime-watching audience who, dareisay, have developed the power to selectively ignore questionable content if other factors prove strong enough. I'd doubt it would go further.
If it wins AOTY I'm going to write an essay entitled "In Too Deep: A Study of AnimeGAF's descent into the Abyss and how Torture Porn won Anime of the Year 2017".
I looked, there wasn't an OT. Yeah the questionable content I couldn't care less for but it was so easily overshadowed by the amazing world building, actual meaningful character developments and intrigue the Abyss provided. Maybe it was because of the art style but it came off as a naive innocence of children at one end of the spectrum, to purely scientific methodology on the other. It was definitely a weird mix but not lewd like most pandering anime tropes, for the most part.

I think I've seen it getting mentioned a few times in the bi-weekly Off-Topic 'new anime sucks' threads. You know, as the supposedly Ghlbli-esque modern TV series everyone should be watching. Not just there, even in some other random threads. But that was during its first couple weeks. Not sure if that's still the case.
I bet even now it's still recommended a lot because quite frankly there seem to be a hell lot of people who're not even registering the icky aspects of it. The anime subreddit is one such place where I'm not even sure that has been acknowledged at all. If someone ever voiced such criticism (and made it sound like that instead of some self-deprecating humor) it must've been heavily buried in downvotes. But /r/anime's episode discussion threads are essentially pure praise for every show that's even moderately liked.
In general, people tend to be really lenient on a show they overall like. So even those who recognize the pedo-crap or wonder if the violence isn't too detailed, too often, might shrug that criticism off because, eh, if they really liked Made in Abyss overall that's not worth bothering about or sth.
u wot? Gankutsuou, Welcome to the NHK, Seto no Hanayome and Last Exile are pretty good. Then there's the masterpiece that is Strike Witches.
If I could do it all again, I wouldn't have recommended it to my friends had I known how questionable it got in the later episodes. But like, it was a really good first episode y'all
Standard fanservice, yea I can tune that out if the show's good enough. This on the other hand, ugh. I mean, I guess I can't really say shit since I still finished it (Because everything else was rather compelling), but yea, no desire to recommend it.

I think that's a solid assessment. There's plenty of people who are 'into' anime but don't keep up with seasonal shows and so for that audience I imagine this series would be somewhat palatable. However, for anyone on the edges of (or outside) the 'fandom', the show is packed to the brim with big red flashing warning signs that will surely keep warn people away, putting a hard-cap on the series' appeal.
You know, I initially thought that Made in Abyss getting anywhere near AOTY was very unlikely, until I looked at the list of 2017 anime. There haven't really been many 'high impact' shows this year, even compared to last year.

i just watched this over the last two days and aside from ep 10 it felt like you guys were blowing things out of proportion
but of course i could just be "in too deep" lol
Episode 10 and 13. Other than that I was just rolling my eyes about kids being hung up naked and Riko being topless so often. They also really liked talking about Reg's genitalia.
Pretty sure it will be my #1. Nothing really is even in the same ballpark.
Considering the controversial scene in Rakugo S2, and its implications, maybe MHA S2 deserves the title.

I mean, you could easily make the argument that Made in Abyss is the best made anime of 2017. I certainly don't endorse every aspect of it, but nevertheless it's one of the most powerful experiences I've had watching anime and in most respects (strong sound direction, atmospheric soundtrack, excellent backgrounds, hopeful yet not saccharine) is exactly the sort of work I'm always looking for.
Ew. Anime hasn't been so bad in 2017 that a mediocre adaptation such as My Hero Academia deserves to be called the best.
What kind of controversial scene? I still have to watch Rakugo S2.

There's a conversation which implies that the father of Konatsu's child Shinnosuke was Konatsu's own foster father Yakumo, a rather distasteful implication. It doesn't even make sense with the rest of the story and characterization, so it really sticks out like a sore thumb.

Seems to be following the welcome to the ballroom trajectory, huge hype by manga readers before airing, dull tepid lack of enthusiasm upon airing. It appears dull and slower that some were expecting.
It falls in line with the rest of the season about secrecy. I disagree with the notion it sticks out. There's foreshadowing that hints at it and second of all there's a thing called context. In a general case I would have agreed.
Then again I watched everything a few months ago in a binge, so I have a different view about this.
I actually can't disagree with that so far, which is off putting on many levels.

They are both josei manga written by women.
It sticks out because
it is inconsistent with the characterization of Konatsu and especially Yakumo as seen previously.
Didn't Classroom of the Elite suffer the same fate? I remember hearing how changes were made from the Light Novel that people didn't like it at all, which led to the anime bombing.

Having read the original novel, I found Gankutsuou severely lacking, adding high heel mechas and making the Count like Hellsing. Welcome to NHK strangely didnt impress me either. Last Exile had also some storytelling issues.
That was back then. Have to rewatch the last two. Last Exile on Blueray preferably. Must recompare those series to new productions.
While some simple gambatte series like Kaleido Star wouldnt raise many eyebrows.
A plot twist changes something in the plot. There's none of that. This is a reveal that doesn't change the outcome.
