Autumn Anime 2017 |OT| Makes us all rotten

Having read the original novel, I found Gankutsuou severely lacking, adding high heel mechas and making the Count like Hellsing. Welcome to NHK strangely didnt impress me either. Last Exile had also some storytelling issues.

That was back then. Have to rewatch the last two. Last Exile on Blueray preferably. Must recompare those series to new productions.

While some simple gambatte series like Kaleido Star wouldnt raise many eyebrows.

I would caution against projecting your own tastes - which are rather idiosyncratic - onto people at large.

I will also say that Gankutsuou is far and away the best thing Gonzo ever produced. It's a fascinating interpretation of The Count of Monte Cristo, and thanks to Mahiro Maeda it managed to avoid the mediocre productions that plagued most Gonzo productions.

A plot twist changes something in the plot. There's none of that. This is a reveal that doesn't change the outcome.

You would have to go in detail here to point out the inconsistency. There are multiple sides to both characters here over a long period of time.

The relationship we witness between Konatsu and Yakumo gives no hint of romantic love between them until the conversation between Konatsu and Higuchi in the final episode. For Yakumo, who showed no interest in sexual contact even in his relationship with the geisha Miyokichi, to agree to have sex with his ward is jarringly dissonant with the rest of his character.

Add Made in Abyss and Dragon Maid to that list.

I really should watch the rest of Dragon Maid, but I had to stop at that scene in ep.6.

People here really did love that show, but I just couldn't get into it..

If it wins AOTY I'm going to write an essay entitled "In Too Deep: A Study of AnimeGAF's descent into the Abyss and how Torture Porn won Anime of the Year 2017".
Look at the popular shows for this year. Ancient Magus' Bride is about someone selling themselves into slavery, Kakegurui is masochistic gambling or something(???), the protagonist of My Hero Academia breaks his fingers and limbs on a regular basis to fight people, Attack on Titan is the cannibalistic giants show or something, Kono Suba is about masochistic adventurers in a fantasy world...........what escape is there from weird things?

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
Aho Girl is about a girl who loves bananas.
Love Live! Sunshine! is about some girls who love their school.
Side M is about some guys who like seeing smiles on other people's faces.

It's easy to escape the negative and weird things and embrace animated positivity.

There is none. Anime in itself is full of weird things...

At least we will always have Tsuki ga Kirei and Just Because. WAit, probably only the first one...

Variety is the spice of life and anime.

One second I'm watching a little girl and robot almost get brutally killed by cenobite reject monsters in a horrible subterranean pit and the next I'm watching a show about an incredibly stupid teenage girl with a obsession with bananas and her dour, anti-social best guy friend followed up by a show about a boy who wants to be the world's greatest chef and his challenges with other students along the way.

dimb is right, this year’s shows are rife with themes of destruction and torture and other unsavory subjects, thus why AOTY should be something wholesome and uplifting, something with a sense of adventure and wonder that just so happens to feature, say, animal girls.

Pardon for my ignorance, i haven't rewatched rakugo since it ended, but was it ever clear cut that Konatsu was honest in her conversation with Higuchi? I remember getting the impression that she was "pulling his leg" so to say, implying that he would write something like that i one of his rakugo stories.

I friend of mine really loves it, and he drives me mad since he is always telling me to watch it.

For some reason I'm not interested in it, despite loving I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying.

I wish they adapted Ojojojo. Personally I believe it is the author's best work.

And with the way things are going, if it doesn't win this year, it'll not have another chance.

This gif is going to get such great use on the AOTY voting thread this year..... Konosuba is the gift that keeps on giving!

See, I really enjoyed ICUWMHIT, but the humor and characters didn't click for me with Dragon. Oh well, everyone is different.

There's plently of love that both don't show for each other. Yes, there's not much of a romantic relationship between the two. However we're shown the vulnerable moments of Konatsu and Yakumo. Konatsu having nightmares and crying with Yakumo consoling her. This begs the question if it happened frequently and if something changed their relationship. Konatsu could have come up on Yakumo. The whole affair may have been (conveniently) an one time thing. A moment of weakness.

What we do know is that Konatsu moved out of Yakumo's house and moved back in when she found out she was pregnant. At that time I vaguely knew it was Yakumo's. When I saw the kid, that was when it was all but confirmed for me.

Like I said the reveal falls in theme of secrecy. How Yakumo kept the truth of Miyokichi's death from Konatsu. In turn Konatsu keeping it secret on who's the father.

Do I think the season would have been better without it? Yes, it basically adds nothing to the show and brings up more questions than answers. However I don't find it to be that controversial. It doesn't ruin the anime.
If that really does ruin it for people, that would be more on themselves than the show.

I would even recommend it more so everyone can form their own opinion on it. Didn't vote for it last year, so it got my vote for anime of the year now.

It would be considered a ripoff, since King Game and spinoffs existed long before it :(

Completely different set-ups though.

Mayoiga played off the whole horror theme, but didn't have any horror at all. They could have really made a cool death game scenario out of it, which is what everyone was expecting from the promo art.

Not if I make the thread and put in a rule that said gif can't be used.

3 Leaves 3 Colors 8

Despite sharing interests, Selina and Teru just can't jive together. Kondo got to be on her own today, and her lack of tact is pretty something.

The twins are pretty annoying though.

King's Game, Episode 3 - Okay, this series isn't trash. It's a fucking dumpster fire and I love it lol

Did you manage to find the "real" episode one? It was pulled due to complaints/copyright shenanigans. Think crunchyroll literally just starts with episode 2 now lol

I haven't watched it yet. Since it looks like it isn't available anywhere legally, I'm going to have to sail to seven seas. :p

Evil or Live 1-2

Damn this is bad. A pathetic, passive dude, despicable characters all around, an awful premise, mediocre animation and direction and the cringe at that part where he touches her boob and then starts talking (in his head) about understanding the universe as a comparison to the feeling.

Juuni Taisen - Ep. 3
The show is going downhill fast.
Killing the narrotor is a cool trick... once. When you are doing it every episode, it becomes meaningless.
The action was great in episode 1, but not very impressive in 2 and 3.
Promissing us a one-many army that dies without fighting back at all is very anti-anticlimactic.
You could argue that this is supposed to show us how strong he is, but without knowing her powerlevel, it doesn't really tell us anything.

Wasn't Orange pretty sad as well?
Also add Koe no Katachi to the mix. Although Grave of the Fireflies might have already destroyed him at that point.

Orange is not nearly as emotional as Grave of Fireflies, Clannad After Story, Your Lie in April, and Plastic Memories.

Orange is fine, but I don't think I ever teared up or got choked up.

Inuyashiki Episode 2:

So I guess this is as much an advertisement for Gantz as it is Inuyashiki given all of the fucking Gantz posters. Also, it takes a special talent to make a series like this and make it fucking boring but here we are.

Those were concerns, not tastes. Or else I wouldnt have bothered watching it.

I honestly don't remember, that's why I phrased it as a question.

I haven't watched Plastic Memories. Is it really sad?
Clannad AS and Grave of the Fireflies take the crown for me so far. Followed by AnoHana, Koe no Katachi. Your Lie in April was good, but it ruined some of the more serious moments because the show was afraid to keep up its serious tone. That ending was excellent though, although I didn't quite like the conclusion.

Just Because ep.3

This show is a lot of fun to watch and it will be a shame if we don't get to finish everything of. The subtle nature of the tone, art and even the characters is really pleasant to watch.

given I felt some emotions while reading the first half of orange... and never felt anything aside from "get on with it already" with you lie in april.... granted I still need to actually watch beyond the first episode of the anime of orange, and see how it finishes :p

I am going to have to disagree.

i just watched this over the last two days and aside from ep 10 it felt like you guys were blowing things out of proportion

but of course i could just be "in too deep" lol
I don't know if there's much "lol"-ing to be had. I know Duckroll brought it up in a jokey manner, but I think its a fair comment.

If you show a regular human being an anime scene featuring naked underage children (and bearing in mind that people assume anime is full of pedophilia anyway) and imagine they're just going let it go without comment you are mistaken. Made in Abyss features such content from the first episode!

Im still somewhat conflicted about the violence in Made in Abyss. I would feel better without the unnecessary bathing stuff and naked tie up punishment because the violence is pretty fucking raw, but that's what that kind of semi-surgery looks like. Like when Nanachi is taking those mushrooms out Riko is struggling and screaming and even pissing herself its really gross and maybe exploitative but realistically if youre going to get that surgery without anesthetics youre probably going to vomit and piss and worse. It seems to want to go really hard on that angle.

The implication is that
if she spends any extended amount of time away from the emotion-eating goop on her island, her emotions come back.
I understand the mechanics of how this effect operates, I just found the speed that which it occurred to be rather fast. Again, this is just how I feel so I'm not complaining that the show is violating some kind of narrative law. I just find things which happen to quickly too feel a little 'easy', and therefore unearned.

Again, I haven't really thought this through as a hard and fast 'rule' (or even guideline) but I just feel that important character transformations need to occupy a certain amount of running time (or be conveyed by some other device that compresses time) in order for them to 'work' for me. The longer something takes to change or develop, the weightier that transformation/development feels. When something transitions too fast there's not enough time for me to get used to it one way before it's changed.

I suppose this year's ultimate example is Twin Peaks S2, which is probably the series that is causing me to reflect on this particular piece of storytelling.

As you can see, my thoughts are not yet fully formed, but I hope that the above begins to convey why I have this reaction to how Lykos has been handled in the show thus far. Perhaps we'll see in future episodes that there's a much longer path for this character to travel. These are just my initial reactions.

Didn't someone describe Made in Abyss as torture porn, featuring kids? That's fairly accurate with where the show goes. It's gut-wrenching, but I think it still is better than some off the off-hand scenes like the one thrown in the last episode and seems more exploitative than just the violence. I think the gore highlights just how messed up and brutal the Abyss is and how much of a one-way-trip the journey is. The rest is unnecessary given their ages.
