Orange is not nearly as emotional as Grave of Fireflies, Clannad After Story, Your Lie in April, and Plastic Memories.

Orange is fine, but I don't think I ever teared up or got choked up.

It has been a while but Orange disappointed me. Now, as to why, I need to remember, but it certainly was disappointing.

Plastic Memories too. Never felt anything about what happened to Isla.

Didn't someone describe Made in Abyss as torture porn, featuring kids? That's fairly accurate with where the show goes. It's gut-wrenching, but I think it still is better than some off the off-hand scenes like the one thrown in the last episode and seems more exploitative than just the violence. I think the gore highlights just how messed up and brutal the Abyss is and how much of a one-way-trip the journey is. The rest is unnecessary given their ages.

Not really? Made in Abyss is more like 127 Hours or The Revenant. They got fucked up by nature.

Torture porn would be stuff like Hostel where its a human doing it to another human for sadistic reasons. Nature is just nature.

Unless youre talking about what Bondrewd did to Nanachi and Mitty which is still more like The Fly and Frankenstein

Im still somewhat conflicted about the violence in Made in Abyss. I would feel better without the unnecessary bathing stuff and naked tie up punishment because the violence is pretty fucking raw, but that's what that kind of semi-surgery looks like. Like when Nanachi is taking those mushrooms out Riko is struggling and screaming and even pissing herself its really gross and maybe exploitative but realistically if youre going to get that surgery without anesthetics youre probably going to vomit and piss and worse. It seems to want to go really hard on that angle.

I think it's possible to hold what appear to be contradictory views on this.

For example, you can feel that making the protagonists so young is unnecessarily exploitative, because it's always more distressing to see children suffer than adults. It feels (probably correctly) that it plays into the author's particular tastes.

On the other hand, a central tenant of the world of Made in Abyss is that the characters travel through an extremely dangerous world and that is reinforced by actions having very real consequences. We're often subject to 'sanitized' depictions of violence, but the series opts to pull no punches because it wishes to make the 'costs' to these characters feel real and weighty. In that regard, the show succeeds.

You can also ask - would the series be as effective if the violence was toned down? It's a difficult question because then you're really need to go down into the nitty gritty of each scene. Was this shot acceptable, and did this one cross a line? Did we need to see this character piss themselves, or could that be removed? You could probably have a pretty in-depth debate about the function (and effectiveness) of every single element of these scenes.

In general, however, I feel like there's enough general 'ick-ness' to say that the show as a whole crossed the line. Even if that's just a gut reaction to the material, rather than any one particular thing you could point to (besides all the nudity).

I don't know if there's much "lol"-ing to be had. I know Duckroll brought it up in a jokey manner, but I think its a fair comment.

If you show a regular human being an anime scene featuring naked underage children (and bearing in mind that people assume anime is full of pedophilia anyway) and imagine they're just going let it go without comment you are mistaken. Made in Abyss features such content from the first episode!

Viewers tastes have changed.Popular series like Mysterious Cities of Gold featured a scene where the kids bath inside a lake naked too. Robotech (Mospeada), has an 11 year old girl naked in one scene and she takes interest in older guys to marry.

Todays anime bath scenes, even in innocent Ghibli movies like Totoro, would make unused viewers feel discomfort.

The violence/gore in Made in Abyss was pretty graphic at times, but yea, that wasn't my issue with it at all lol...

Same. Since we know they are traveling to a place where anything can happen, especially with that curse, we understand blood and gore will appear. In a way, it reinforces that the trip isn't going to be nice, and all the horrors that is awaiting down there.

Oh Malka, eres un depredador sexual. Baneame!!

If the goal is to be as raw as possible which is admittedly effective then perhaps it does need that. Like the wishbone scene in Bone Tomhawk while absolutely gruesome is still more palatable to me then surgery, which is the highest accomplishment of modern medicine performed by the best of experts. But its still so icky.

So with Made in Abyss going beyond the stuff that's just a lot of blood to more surgical levels of being graphic its far more uncomfortable for me to watch. Bleeding from the eyes, vomit and yes even the urination helps sell that this is really, really going to hurt. As does the voice acting of course.

Time to meat the main villain of the series, who turns out to be a completly irredeemable monster.
I mean, he likes One Piece and hate Gantz, so obviously he is the worst.
Well, there is also the part where he kill several people because it makes him feel alive.

As a villain he made a good first impression. It's clear that he has to be stopped asap.
He is also the opposite of the main character, which almost always makes for a good conflict.
Looks the are going to fight next episode. Let's see how the handle that aspect of the show.

The bigger issue is certain scenes being needlessly sexualized. Nudity isn't pornography but you have to side eye intentions when it includes an underage character's punishment being stripped bare and strung up or talking about erections. I think that some stuff that would have flown earlier won't now (like bath scenes), but I we we could all agree that some of the stuff in MiA is highly suspect, even if it's only included in limited portions.

I think it was in relation to the voyeuristic viewpoint the audience seem to have when viewing these events. Personally, I don't take issue with the gore itself. I think it's needed regardless of the age of the protagonists to highlight the world itself.

The abyss is unforgiving, even to children. If that was what the author wanted to show us, fine. But the gore scenes combined with the nudity and genitalia talk is what makes it weird.
I liked the show a lot, but some of that stuff made me roll my eyes really hard.

The kid drowning was really uncomfortable to watch.

I didn't really feel the scenes themselves were sexualized, but I agree honestly. Given what's drawn in the manga, the author probably has... questionable taste.

I understand what you’re saying here, but this isn’t completely accurate. When I saw the first three episodes of The Ancient Magus Bride with my mother, she did not comment at all on the scene in which Chise gets naked in order to bathe. And she’s as “regular human” as they come. I think it depends on the context, framing, and emphasis of the scene.

Watched ID-0 on Netflix.

Kind of awful ending, middling, deeply middling show at best.
Eurgh.

Felt like they suddenly had to reach an end goal in the second half of the show. Mildly interesting bits that they did little with.

You know, I initially thought that Made in Abyss getting anywhere near AOTY was very unlikely, until I looked at the list of 2017 anime. There haven't really been many 'high impact' shows this year, even compared to last year.
Yea MiA is probably going to end up somewhere in my list just due to the lack of competition.

Most of the studios are saving their heavy hitters for next year.

If you don't want Made in Abyss gracing our sacred AOTY list all you have to do it convince enough people there were 10 better anime shows that came out this year and get them to agree with you and put them before it.

Simple.

I honestly don't remember, that's why I phrased it as a question.

I haven't watched Plastic Memories. Is it really sad?
Clannad AS and Grave of the Fireflies take the crown for me so far. Followed by AnoHana, Koe no Katachi. Your Lie in April was good, but it ruined some of the more serious moments because the show was afraid to keep up its serious tone. That ending was excellent though, although I didn't quite like the conclusion.

I like Plastic Memories a lot. People expected something a lot like Steins;Gate due to it being the same writer but I was personally surprised about how it went.

given I felt some emotions while reading the first half of orange... and never felt anything aside from "get on with it already" with you lie in april.... granted I still need to actually watch beyond the first episode of the anime of orange, and see how it finishes :p

I am going to have to disagree.

I disagree. The anime itself was fine but I felt it was more...melancholy than anything else. Your Lie in April had a certain something to it that is hard to express but it hit me much more than Orange did.

It has been a while but Orange disappointed me. Now, as to why, I need to remember, but it certainly was disappointing.

Plastic Memories too. Never felt anything about what happened to Isla.

I liked the characters in Orange well enough. I just think there were instances where the characters didn't do something that I felt was obvious and it irritated me.

I connected with Plastic Memories because of the slow, gradual buildup with the relationship of all the characters and the fleeting moment of it all.

Was it because Suwa
caused his past self to get friendzoned?

I always did find that really weird.

The problem with Plastic Memories is that there's literally no reason for the world to be designed the way it is if the story is just going to be: "I fell in love with a girl that has a terminal illness".

Osomatsu-san, Episodes 1, 5-7 - Okay, so I finally went back and watched the official first episode of Osomatsu. Not going to lie, the Idol remake felt like Osomatsu-san as written by DTL. :p

So far my favorite skits of the series is a tie between the Saw Parody and the one where all the brothers are trolling Todomatsu at his new job at the cafe. I'm loving every minute I'm spending watching this series.

well, duckroll wasn't the first to bring the phrase "too deep" to the discussion, and it being used like the op did is lol worthy. wheredoyouthinkweare.jpg, every regular visitor to this thread is in "too deep," i just found it meaningless commentary from the op, so people bringing it up poking fun at it gets a chuckle out of me

as far as recommending the show goes, i wouldn't mention it to anyone under the age of at least 16, and i'd give them a "shit gets real" warning, and . . . that's it. does it have some broad appeal that will get people to see that anime is art worthy of their attention? nah. but it's also not something that you have to be ashamed to have not only watched but also enjoyed

I like Plastic Memories a lot. People expected something a lot like Steins;Gate due to it being the same writer but I was personally surprised about how it went.

i just realized that i've been misreading that title as Plastic Little all day lol

Yeah... that wasn't really that good. The first part was boring and the second part was overkill.
Although I found the overt GANTZ "advertisement" quite funny.

Just Because! - 3
This was fantastic. They've got the comedic timing on point, all the characters are super well done, even the side characters have their own distinct personalities and they can shine a little once in a while. I really hope the production issues get sorted, and don't impact the quality that much.

I agree 1000% on the punishment. The penis comments, while I can see it more as something curious kids do (like those images of kids looking in their pants like this, or even stuff like the first part of this), I agree it was completely unnecessary. However, with the rest of the stuff I never felt it was sexualized, they never presented Riko's body as something sexual, unlike something like Shiro's camel toe on the first ep of No Game No Life (although Reg's reactions did't help, and it's obvious he's a self-insert for the author). I agree that because of those bad things, the stuff that not really that bad IMO get's overblown. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou had a bath scene, that one could consider a little worse, as Yuuri's boobs were more prominent, and yet I don't see an outcry with the same level as with Made in Abyss.

Although, having said all that, while I haven't read the manga, I've heard of some of the stuff to come that's way worse than that. I wonder if there's a second season if they'll downplay that hard, or keep it the same. I imagine the reaction will be much worse...

Just Because Ep 3

More please! All the characters seemed pretty fleshed out so far even the side characters. I wonder how badly the production woes will do to this but as long as they have a good story that ties up a lot of plot points I should be fine.

Is Orange worth watching?

I remember some people say the direction was pleasant, but then the crash happened...

Hopefully the blu-ray fixed it up a bit.

Just Because 3

This is slowly turning into a delight. The direction and gloomy mood are working wonders. It feels similar to Erased first half in voice acting, dialogue and the general chill feel.

Plus ALL THESE MODAFUCKIN

DOGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS

I actually looked at the BD recently, and I am pleased to report that the worst of the unpolished art in the broadcast version has been cleaned up. I recall episode 7 having some particularly awful art, and that’s been brought up to an acceptable level. I don’t think it’s been made perfect, unsurprisingly, but it’s probably at the point where I can finish watching the show without being too bothered by wonky animation issues.

King's Game Episode 3

Naoya x Nobuaki is the best otp.

Though why didnt the writer just have Naoya and Nobuaki carry out the order, clearly it would have pained Nobuaki much less

I think nothing will top the voting scene.

Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu are now up on Crunchyroll.

Watched the anime to completion three times, it is worth watching in a group.

Eh, it's alright. Guess it depends on how much you can tolerate indecisiveness in romance anime.

I'll give it a shot.

I was bored some time ago and got lots of "boob" anime but not really watched them. This week I finished Senran Kagura. I'm a fan of the games in that they just go for it and are unabashed in what it is. Love that about it. The anime was ok and got kinda interesting at the end with each character's backstory. Who knew there was plot in that cleavage.

Definitely struggled to finish it though and I was playing the vita on a few episodes. But I still had my previous positive look on the franchise.

.... Then I watched the OVA for Estival Versus (which prompted me to watch the series since I bought the game some months back wanting a DW but not DW romp)... yeah.... I'm all for cleavage and implied nudity with smoke and steam ect. But here they just full blown show it. It's kinda like seeing a character you like in nude fan art. It has no real impact cause its not official, here it really turned me off since it WAS official. Dunno why they went the extra step themselves but -shrug- Definitely not something I was into oddly.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Fumoffu is one of my favorite anime ever but you do have to watch the original to get all the jokes.

Here's one of the rare cases where I wish the dub was included. Its all down to what I was first exposed to as a kid and so now it sounds wrong.

Guess I better get used to it though as I'll be seeing that subbed. Raises the question, has the cast for the new show been announced?

I mean it's not like the dub doesn't match up decently to the sub voices.

I remember watching 2nd raid in japanese after watching the first two series dubbed and not realizing until halfway through the episode I was watching the show with a different cast lol.

Valkyrie Drive:Mermaid - 12 - End

I've heard a lot about this anime, and having sat down to watch it from beginning to end this evening I come away feeling confused.

Basically all the talk I've seen about this anime prior to watching it was about how lewd it was, and boy is it, but nobody ever mentioned the transition the anime takes from being a mindlessly humorous ecchi in the first half of season, to it suddenly gaining a plot and turning into Symphogear in the second half(probably because they dropped it before they reached that far, which is something I don't blame them for tbh).

It got to the point where in episode 10 I had to stop watching to check and make sure that I was still watching the same anime and that I hadn't accidently stumbled on a Symphogear spin off. It was weird, though not unwelcomed since the action in the latter half was absolutely amazing, espescially the final fight.

Honestly, if Valkyrie Drive had chosen to be a lewder version of Symphogear(without the singing of course) from the start it could have been something special, the latter half of the season showed me that it had the ability to pull it off. If it ever gets a season 2 I hope thats the path it takes.
