AVATAR surpasses Titanic to become the highest-grossing movie OF ALL TIME

To be fair, though, Avatar is not the highest-grossing movie "OF ALL TIME," Kayne notwithstanding. It's the highest-grossing movie up to now. Saying "of all time" means it will never, ever, be surpassed in the future, even 100 years from now, which is, as so many people have pointed out, absurd given how Hollywood loves to use raw numbers so the record keeps getting broken. But "highest-grossing movie thus far" isn't quite as catchy.

Yes, I'm dumb for realizing that "all time" includes past, present, and future.

I'm not trying to diminish Avatar's achievements at all, it will undoubtedly hold that record for a long, long time, maybe even my whole lifetime (I guess I should have realized my post would instantly be lumped in the trolls even if it's factually correct). But the way Hollywood jerks itself off everytime a record is broken ("highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time" "highest-grossing documentary of all time" etc.) is odd, to say the least. That's really the only thing I'm talking about; I don't care what film actually holds the record.

So, just to be sure: is it anyway possible for people to read my post in any way other than an attempt to bash Avatar? Because I honestly wasn't trying to do that. I was more commenting on Hollywood's retarded marketing practices.

"Of all time" is constantly used in the way it's being used with Avatar for everything, not just "Hollywood". People calling Federer, Schumacher or Jordan the greatest of all time in their sports is one example. It's just common sense, Hollywood didn't coin that phrase.

Canceling would be too harsh - they just need to only hand out Silver and Bronze medals, because someone in the future will set the new record; everyone is in at least second place, always.

Avatar made $19.5m WW yesterday, BTW, so it's already $35m ahead of Titanic. Should be well over $2b by the end of the weekend at which point it will be about $150m+ ahead of Titanic. Cameron's going to sandbag this record at least as much as he did Titanic's.
 
I'm so glad with this news.

Avatar may not be the greatest movie of all time, but it is indeed an unforgettable experience, whether it's in 3d or not. Very entertaining, gorgeous, and with many memorable scenes.

It had been a long time since I've felt what I did when watching Avatar. My God, such an awesome experience. It's simple, but it's magic.

The movie deserves what it's getting
