Avatar: The Way of Water Official Teaser Trailer

So fantasy = sci-fi?
What’s the difference for you ? That one plays in the possible future and the other one is purely fantasy ?

I’m not saying that they are the same genre and obviously not that they are equally bad or good. All I’m saying is that they are both CGI movies

Yea because everyone else is already doing performance capture underwater.

If you go to Silver sprigs in central Florida, they filmed a bunch of cool movies under water. Like Creature from the Black lagoon. You should go just to see how clear the water is.

I didn’t say flop but underperform as the first Avatar was a “Wii” situation with the right device in the right time. Avatar was synonymous with 3D but now by the trailer it is just a sequel to a good CGI film. You talk like everything Cameron touches turn to gold. The dude last major project was producing Alita.
His last two films have been the biggest film of all time, twice in a row. People are right, doubt Cameron at your peril.

Plus it depends what you mean be 'underperform'. Would $2bil worldwide be 'underperforming'?, because i cant see less than $2bil as this film is going to make a billion in China imo, and then it 'only' needs to make another billion for the rest of the world, which it should do relatively easily.

Even $1 less than the original will be screamed as underperforming as people don’t understand sequels always make less than the original.

Real 4K trailer without any upscaling.

Looks really good in close up shots but im still not sure if this is true 4k. Image is kinda soft.

Speaking of good looking 4k CG movies, I am very impressed by the CG in Transformers 4 and 5, and even Warcraft. I only have them on vudu, but the IQ is crisp and CG on those transformer armors is insanely detailed. ILM's best work. The orcs in warcraft look better than real life human beings lol. There are some shots with multiple orcs where the illusion falls apart, but ready player one, Warcraft and Transformers 4 and 5 have the best 4k CG ive seen.

Look at this stupid cartoon that millennials love.

I hope it is good, but I doubt it will be. The original at least moved technology forward.

They spent a year and a half just developing the technology for underwater motion capture. They literally created tech to make this film

"It's never been done before and it's very tricky because our motion capture system, like most motion capture systems, is what they call optical base, meaning that it uses markers that are photographed with hundreds of cameras. The problem with water is not the underwater part, but the interface between the air and the water, which forms a moving mirror. That moving mirror reflects all the dots and markers, and it creates a bunch of false markers. It's a little bit like a fighter plane dumping a bunch of chaff to confuse the radar system of a missile. It creates thousands of false targets, so we've had to figure out how to get around that problem, which we did. Basically, whenever you add water to any problem, it just gets ten times harder. So, we've thrown a lot of horsepower, innovation, imagination and new technology at the problem, and it's taken us about a year and a half now to work out how we're going to do it."
— Cameron, on blending underwater filming and motion capture system.[

And he did all that instead of telling his actors "move slower- pretend you are under water". Saved billions mitigated risk of drowning.

One more thing I never understood is how people can bet against James Cameron. The man is a legend when comes to pioneering new tech in movies.

This is going to be an amazing 3d experience

I did not bet against Cameron....he makes great movies, I just expressed that I do not think the movie will be good. Will it be visually stunning probably, will it be a good story, probably not. Will I go see it, I am sure I will.

I am right there with you on the story part. It will be generic and I am sure I won't care if great visuals invests me in that world.

People say Mad Max Fury Road has a bad story also, and it is among one of the most brilliant movie I have ever seen.

The description says it was taken from a 4K source file. Make sure your YouTube is actually set to 4K and not 1080p.
Yeah, it always is. It definitely looks better but i think it could be a bit soft because the original render is 2k or something. It's basically a CG film. Not shot using digital or film cameras.

It's funny how some movies get a pass despite having a generic by the numbers story while other impeccably filmed movies like Mad Max and Avatar are trashed as derivative.

For example, Mad Max lost the three big awards to the much more traditional movies. The Revanant won Best director and cinematographer while Spotlight took home best picture. Both great movies, but revenant is as basic as it gets for a revenge movie, and Spotlight while well made is really nothing more than a procedural journalism drama. I can see Reveanant winning those awards but there is no doubt in my mind that Mad Max was dismissed by voters because it was a straight up action flick while revenant was shot and told like a traditional drama.

Hurt Locker winning over Avatar was hailed as some kind of victory as if summer blockbusters like Avatar ever win best picture oscars, but I was like dude that movie is literally about a soldier addicted to war. There is nothing original about the movie other than the amazing directing by Katherine Bigelow. Alfonso Cuaron won best director for a barebones Gravity. Literally nothing happens in that movie. Dunkirk had a better story, and yet James Cameron makes a generic story with indursty leading tech and visuals and he isnt awarded the same leeway. His stories MUST be genre defining just like his visuals.

Double standards.

Sigourney Weaver famously said the only reason Bigelow beat Cameron in the directing category that year was due to her gender.

And we all know it’s true. Hurt Locker is the least-watched Best Picture winner of all time.

I dont know man. She directed the shit out of Hurt Locker. I personally think James Cameron was better but she deserved the oscar.

Best picture is another story.

I mean whole Avengers quadrology disagrees but they were not exactly top of all time.

Avatar 2 will easily recoup money in China alone. They loved nude blue aliens.

Hyped for the movie but I predict this’ll get to $1B or close to it at least. I don’t see this making $1.5B let alone $2B or $3B. Would love to be proven wrong on this though.

A month ago if you asked me about Avatar I'd have told you I don't give a shit. But as soon as the title for this movie was released, suddenly I was excited to see it, and I wanna rewatch the first film. I just wanna see James Cameron show us his li'l baby, ya know? It's a massive-budget picture and it won't be soulless like, fucking, every single Marvel Studios project.

edit: after one casual, distracted view, that music already got stuck in my head. That's a real nice track.
edit2: the shot at 1:10 stunned me, got a real "what the fuck" outta me. This looks so impressive.

Very much looking forward to this.

Even though the story of the first one was a Dances with Last Samurai retread, I still loved it.

Spring just got here, but I can't wait til December. (y)

2 or 3 weeks is all it gets in China if it's released there IMO.

I actually think China won't let this play there for that long. They won't want a foreign movie to be the number 1 movie there. If they let it play to its full potential it could probably do 1B in China alone.

I'm getting a distinct lack of, "The interstellar civilization that somehow isn't a K2 doesn't seem to be committing Exterminatus for our magic Unobtanium."

Shit copy of Disney's Pocahontas, shit sequels.

Looks like its going to be a hit in France.:messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

It'll be huge all over the world. I don't know if it'll make as much as the original (on course for 3bn when it gets released again in September), but it'll easily be the biggest box office hit of the year.
