Backwards compatibility is garbage

Because I dont have a PS2 or PS3 and I do want to play the games from them. Id prefer to just buy one console.

Also, less stuff to connect and it is not out of production.

That's not really true though. More consoles might have a "defect" these days, that is true. But many will survive it. Perhaps most will survive it.

In 20 years we will still have 360s and PS3s that haven't broken. It's not necessarily a "matter of time" that they will all die (again, within a reasonable timeframe of a few decades, because of course everything that exists will eventually die).

PS1s and PS2 died like crazy too.... and yet there are a ton of working ones around today.
 
Uh, I neither have the space nor input ports for dozens of consoles hooked up at once. Nor do I have a bag to carry every handheld since game boy around, Etc etc.

Agreed, the only backwards compatibility I'm concerned with is the arcade games I bought. I haven't purchased any full retail games through DD so for me that isn't an issue.

I still play Smash Bros. Melee to this day and it's still insanely fun, I don't get tired of games I enjoy.
 
Wii games over HDMI is something I prefer to the shitty cable Wii came with.
So thank you but I'll keep BC thank you very much.

Why read Pride and Prejudice when you can have Twilight?

I not only revisit games, but play classics for the first time. And while I usually like to go for emulating them on my computer, having backwards compatibility is still a nice feature to have.

Tons of people tend to trade in their systems for the next generation (although I personally always keep mine for sentimental value), but they might not want their entire library to go to waste. Plus, new system launches tend to be rather dry, and BC helps tide over the launch period until there are enough new games to engage your interest.

I'm talking by personal experience, I never had a console breaking on me, only this gen my Wii died and my fat PS3 is starting to act weird and both aren't even 5 years old. :/

You're probably right though, I'll give this to you, but I think that things like FAT PS3/360 will be the hardest/most expensive to find in, let's say, 10 years from now? The slims versions may last longer because they consume less power in general and both are revised, more stable version of their former selves that released late this gen. Still, I can say what I want, I ain't Shulk so don't take me to the word! ;)

Pro-tip to OG Wii owners: Never use WiiConnect24 on your Wii, never, it will kill it.

The only consoles that I've had perma break down on me have been from this generation. Going forward, though, I agree with this statement and feel BC is more appropriate now than ever.
 
This thread makes sense only if you play the annual CoD/Madden/Fifa/whatever there are games that only comes out once in a gen without sequels an people still want to play them
 
Wait, I read the OP, and I don't understand why it is "garbage." Is giving the consumer more options to play their games "garbage?" Why would you want potential features taken away?

Also, I love playing and replaying old games, so no backwards compatibility really sucks for me. It is the reason I love to buy stuff from GOG.com. They have done a pretty good job so far making sure their games work on newer systems.
 
The PS3 upped the PS2 games aesthetics. I got to play my classics and have new shiny visuals. Plus, some people aren't made of money brother. They need to sell they current gen to afford the upgrade. Love my PS3 because I don't have to keep my PS1, and PS2 plugged in at all times to enjoy my games from them. And for your information I've beat Resident Evil 2 over 40 times and I'll never get tired of it. It's also a huge selling point. People will buy a new console and say "hey, I bought the other console last gen but now I can check out these games I missed without having to buy a second, older console."
 
Don't get the drill either. I couldn't care less about backwards compability. Especially these days. Even if one console breaks you can easily get a new one on the internet or download the game again from a store online. Yeah, you probably pay a few bucks again for the same game. Bug HUH! Wolrd breaks down.

1) Space. As in, the conservation of physical space. This generation of consoles was already physically big; adding in 3/4/5 more consoles to play all my games would be intolerable. If you live in a McMansion or have no family, maybe this isn't a problem for you.

2) Cost. I can sell my PS2 instead of keep it if the PS3 is perfectly backwards compatible.

3) Convenience. Even if space and cost were not an issue, the ability to fire up a single system with a single controller which houses all of my games is very convenient.

The North American Launch PS3 will be valued because of the hardware PS2 backwards compatibility.

Launch 360? Naw... that version might be one of the more disaster-prone consoles in history. I don't think people will want it. But actually there were some very defect-resistant later versions of the original 360 design with the Jasper motherboard (circa 2008-10). Those will be around for a long time.

I definitely like to reduce wear on my consoles, so that always-running stuff seems like a nuisance. Especially when it's useless like WiiConnect24. You should also leave Remote Play off on the PS3... the fan is constantly moving with that.

Based on my experience: my launch PS2 committed suicide in the first 6 months. It happened before this generation. PS1 as well. Some models of consoles have had defects that were luck-of-the-draw, and were corrected in revisions. My 2002 PS2 doesn't make a fuss, that's all I'm saying. If they survive defect, they are usually ok for decades.

Its a nice feature to have but it's not a deal breaker. It was nice having gcn support on the Wii. Was handy to play smash before brawl came out.

Maybe, though the example he specifically cited was probably more akin to asking why I should watch the Super Bowl from 1995 when I could watch the latest one in HD now... even though for older programming I'd rather watch Twin Peaks or classic Simpsons instead, with Twin Peaks being a wholly unique show with few if any real alternatives and the Simpsons having lost its way since then.

And, of course, as demonstrated with games I'm sure there's value to rewatching old sports broadcasts for fans anyway.
 
Backwards compatability is awesome because it saves space. I'm able to keep the gamecube in the closet because I own a wii, for example. Same with the 3DS/DS and Vita/PSP.

I like consolidating my library into as few systems and possible, and BC is a great way to do that.
 
I played all of one PS2 games on my launch PS3, GOW 2. If I'm going to play old games, I'd rather have the HD remakes of Uncharted or Killzone in 1080p60. More than anything I'd like to see Nintendo have their classics available to play on the new controller. I get why others want it, but personally I like playing new games, and if I do play older ones it's on pc at higher resolutions and framerate.
 
garbage OP - i love OG hardware, but if i can keep my library (much less with better res/etc), why not? stuff 2 gens or more is often easily emulated. right now, my panny plasma has: WU, PS3, 360, PC, NES, SNES, DC, GC, Genesis and soon a Saturn hooked up. it's nice when i can consolidate, man

to each their own, but i'm very much grateful to not be the same kind've gamer as you - lemme ask you, when someone says they wanna see easy rider, the graduate, bullit or a classic western, do you scoff and insist they watch hunger games or something more recent?
 
I think if something carries the same brand (ie; Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3 or Wii,Wii U), the latest version should be able to play all the older versions.

Just seems like it's going to get confusing for consumers.

So you're basically using PC's amazing backward compatibility. I wish consoles were that good at BC.

If we survived the PS3 not having backwards compatibility we can do it again and survive the PS4 not having it.
 
This is the shitiest thread i've seen in some time. Wouldnt you agree with me that if people are complaining, they would have a reason to do it? Like me, I'm loving to have a wiiu so i can play wii games without a problem, since i didn't own one at the time. I would have bought a PS3 if it had that backwards compatibility on all models, because i dont have my PS2 anymore. I'm happy to know that i can play older games and/or have less consoles taking up space in my living room.
 
If I'm buying a console, then I'm expecting it to have BC at least one generation back. I'm still using my 3DS to play DS games, I used my DS for GBA games, and support of GC games on my Wii is also a neat feature.

Though, for God's sake, no one expects PS4/Durango to work with PSX/Xbox games. Don't know where you've drawn that ridiculous Fifa 95 analogy from.

I'm quite sure that PS3 supported BC in the earlier versions of the console. IIRC it was removed in the Slim version.

That was terrible, I had to blow money on a PS2 to play the games I missed out on. In a way this wasn't a big deal for PS3 because so many people had PS2s. Won't be the case next gen, barely half the amount of PS3s are in circulation.

Those and I would like to add the possibility to play previous gen games without never owning an console from there. For example, I skipped the PS1 gen and played FF7-8 on PC, so one of the reasons for getting PS2 was the possibility to play FF9.
 
I'm using a friend's PS3 right now, I intend to buy PS4 and go from there. If PS4 is not backwards compatible I'm going to be rather disappointed, and I'm slowly losing hope.

Shit, Iv even skipped some of the most popular games released this gen. If I dont own the console how am I supposed to play it?

I loved that feature on the Wii, since I've never had a Gamecube, yet I doubt I will ever use it on the WiiU.

I think Nintendo should have ditched the BC, since most people buying the WiiU already have a Wii, and increased the graphics on level 2.

don't worry, i know. I keep my old consoles. To each his own. I did use BC twice on the Ps3 (MGS2 and GoW2) because i never owned a PS2 (did play it a lot though at friends and rented it.
 
If it were up to me, I'd drop BC and use all that silicon budget entirely towards better hardware. Implement software based BC if possible.
