Yeah I call BS on that, how is the emulator that was used on the Xbox 360 more capable of playing titles than the Xbox One implementation? The 360 could play half of the original Xbox library. There is no reason they cannot adapt a general purpose emulator that can read discs directly, nothing stopping Sony from doing that either.
You cut off the quantifier "and legal limits". On the 360 it played what was on the disk. On the later consoles it just used the disk as a key to download a new version on the game. That download has a new executable and was legally a new version of the game that needed permission from the publisher to distribute.

Backwards compatible on the 360 was general purpose, on the later consoles is a virtual machine.

WTF is up with all the Transformers games being top ? This is stupid. If people get 10 votes per day, then the entire thing is pointless.

Removed all my votes because this is fucking dumb.

All those RE games and L.A. Noire are already on Xbox One. Lollipop Chainsaw got a remaster.

Yeah, but maybe I don't want to buy them again. That's one of the key benefits of backward compatibility.

Also the Lollipop Chainsaw 'remaster' is a downgrade.

The time to act is now when people still play on Series X or XONE - make all previous gen games available (or at least the majority), even without boosts or other upgrades. BC on Helix will be all-digital with games individually selected depending on the availability and legal situation.

I think people should stop calling it backward compatibility if -as in the Xbox consoles- isn't going to support 99%+ of the catalog.

My suggestion would be to support the 99%+ (not counting games using Kinect or other weird accesories) of the games of every Xbox console, including inserting physical discs, via emulation.

If -as happened in the current and previous generation- isn't possible to support almost the whole catalog, then people should stop calling it backward compatibility.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x
Tony Hawk's Underground 2
True Crime: Streets of LA
Way of the Samurai 3
Wolfenstein (2009)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

P.S. The sad part is that nothing on that list will make it to market.

Silent Hill: Downpour is already on the BC list, I own it.

They just de-listed the game from all stores. If you can find a physical copy, you're good.

how about A FULL SOFTWARE EMULATOR?

we aren't stuck on the Xbox One's awful Jaguar CPU anymore, so it should be absolutely no issue to actually emulate the games now, which also means it should be no issue to make every game compatible without worrying about licenses.

the only thing that would be in the way then would be technical issues like bugs, graphics glitches etc.

They wouldn't do it because very few people would actually care, but would it really be such a huge lift for Kinect games to be playable on Series X? Even if not 360 ones, at least XB1 releases. For all their talk about game preservation it's weird that a chunk of last gen games are just stuck now. No one really seems to mind but I'd like the option to pop on Fantasia again from time to time.

It is a sad state of affairs that Xbox is the only one asking this

Especially since BC on Xbox is.. kind of boring

Xbox doesn't really have any old stuff that is worth playing and/or has not already gotten I HD remaster

Imagine if Sony or Nintendo took BC seriously in the same way.. they have an absolute treasure of old games that are still not playable on modern systems

the OG Xbox absolutely does.

PGR, PGR2, JSRF, Crazy Taxi 3, Nightfire, Amped, Amped 2, Sega GT2002, Spartan Total Warrior, Tao Feng, Tenchu Return to Darkness, all the Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six spinoffs, THPS2X, the WWE RAW games, the port of Doom 3 that has unique changes from the other versions.

there's tons of stuff on of Xbox that isn't easy to play on modern systems

I think they would have trouble with the car games, ie Project Gotham and Blur, unless they went out of their way to get the licences back...

The majority of stuff I own is already BC. There really isnt THAT many worthwhile things still stuck on 360/OG. The fact that you have clowns in here asking for Otogi (which came out years ago to BC) shows they were never followers of the program in the first place.

The fact that I can play Panzer Dragoon Orta that I bought in 2002 on my Series X in 2026 is just something that cant be matched by Sony and Nintendo. I cant play any of my Gamecube or PS2 games I bought back then on current gen. What about all those digitial games from Wii thru WiiU or PS3?
I use the Xbox's BC constantly.

Heres my complete wish list for Xbox BC:

Outrun 2 and Coast 2 Coast
After Burner Climax
Sega Rally Arcade and Revo
Jet Set Radio Future
Virtual On 4 Force
Bionic Commando 3D and Rearmed 1
Bangai-O Missile Fury
Armored Core 4, For Answer, V, Verdict Day
Anarchy Reigns
Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Raiden Fighters Aces
Mushihimesama Futari
Pink Sweets / Muchi Muchi Pork
Daisenryaku VII - Modern Military Tactics
DOA Beach Volleyball - DOA Extreme 2
Incredible Hulk - Ultimate Destruction
Steel Battalion
Tenchu Z
Fez

To each their own but way disagree with you

Hey, Microsoft,

How about Return to Castle Wolfenstein?

Since you OWN EVERY F'N COMPANY INVOLVED IN IT.

generally it should be the highest priority to get EVERY SINGLE game running that they own the rights to.

Doom 3 for example, all the original Halo versions (MCC is still not perfect), every iD Tech and Bethesda game.

Resurrect all those 2000+ 360 games like how Sony wants to do a complete support to BC games in the future without dealing with individual games case by case.

I suspect they wouldn't consider Doom 3 (or any Halo game) a top priority for BC, since there are already versions of those games available on current systems.
But the absence of RTCW makes no sense.
Unless it's Bill Brown. It seems like nothing he has ever been involved with ever gets relicensed or resold. He might be as obstinate as the JSRF music licensors.

Was that a bad port or a bad game on PC as well? Fortunately I was able to buy the Quake 2 disc separately.

Great game, bad console port. Runs at like 20ish fps or worse on 360. But it actually runs at an unlocked fps cap, so if it were made BC it would run at 60 without needing any extra work. Perfect BC candidate. Plus MS now owns the developer (Raven), publisher(Activision), and Quake IP so there's no licensing issues. Also I imagine MS would want to start promoting the Quake IP since there will probably be another mainline Quake game soon.

RTCW is in GamePass on the Microsoft Store on PC afaik. I think they even offered it for free for a few weeks, and it's now around 5€ to buy there.
so they don't have any excuse there for sure.

as for licenses... that's why I say they should work on an ACTUAL proper emulator, and stop doing their recompilation shenanigans.

with a proper full software emulator, no licensing issues could stop them.
and also, if Helix can indeed sideload PC apps, then they'll actually directly compete against XEMU and Xenia on their Next Gen console.
neither of them can read discs, so it would be nice to have an official disc based solution instead of having to go through a third party emulator.

Xenia already runs on Series X in fact. not great, but it runs, and some games that are not officially back compat are playable through it already on their own console.
with Helix, this will become an even easier option to use.

The obvious starting point to me would be the titles under ABK's umbrella, notably all the Marvel ones ( Spider-man, Wolverine, Ultimate Alliance, X-men Legends, Deadpool, etc)

Insomniac's Marvel contract likely prevents previous Marvel games from getting any marketing. Making the older Wolverine BC might be seen as promoting an older game that undercuts the upcoming Wolverine and Spidey/X-Men games.

I wish JSRF BC would have carried over to Series consoles. I still have an OG Xbox so I can still play it but it would be nice to just use the Series X since it's already hooked up.

Well that would suck if true....

Limitations on Others: Under the agreement, Marvel cannot announce other X-Men games from other publishers for consoles or PC during the contract term, though X-Men characters can appear in broader, "multi-family" Marvel games.

Even tweeting about it would break agreement. Think it would apply to both new and old games.

So standalone Spiderman, Wolverine, X-Men games are out of contention. Ultimate Alliance may be feasible.
