If you're unfamiliar, get All Ages. If you already are familiar with the catalog, you can't go wrong with any of the Big Three (Suffer, No Control, Against The Grain).

Well I went to their concert last night based on empire strikes first and some other songs but now i want it all :p

Stay far, far away from anything they made while Gurewitz wasn't with them. The Grey Race is the best of those and it's definitely a notch below their other stuff.

The Grey Race is great too.

and THe Empire strikes first is not bad too.

Oh and I saw them at the metropolis in montreal. They kicked ass . Rise Against wasn't bad.
But lord... where do I start with From First to last..... Ughhh.... When the singer made his way to the stage, I didn't even know if he was a dude or a chick. He'd run like a freakin 11 year old girl and keep on swinging his mic. He even hit his own bass player with it....

Ughh the pain.

WTF? The Gray Race kicked all amounts of ass.

My personal recommendations:

Suffer
No Control
Gray Race
Tested(live album)

Hell.....there's no such thing as a bad Bad Religion album! There I said it:)

And Empire Strikes First, while at first a little disheartening, quickly became one of my favorites!

Aww thats a tough one! I absolutely love BR. They are all great. I sugest you start with anything but New America or No Substance. I equally love all thier albums, epecially generator, no Control and Stranger than Fiction.

I've only seen them 2 times, but I attempted to see them 3 times. One time I attempted o attend the Plainview NY show, but Greg got sick and it got cancelled. Grrrrrrrr. Just saw them last week! They are always a great live experience!

Go to the official Bad Religion message board and vote for what 5 songs you want to be performed on their upcoming live DVD! I really want a live version of Walk away and Billy.

Their live performance of Skyscraper almost brought tears of hope to my eyes haha.

Such a great song, and such a great performance.

Was on their New America tour, they came out, sweated out 2 hours of nonstop energy, barely pausing between songs. But damn, every one was great.

I'd agree with Suffer, No Control, Against the Grain. Especially Against the Grain.

I'd pick No Control, but all three are great. I saw them on the Suffer and No Control tours and they were great. The last time I saw them was for Stranger Than Fiction and they were getting kind of stale. Dunno. *shrug*

In no particular order...

- The Empire Strikes First
- The Process of Belief
- The Grey Race
- No Control
- Suffer
- Generator

These albums truly exemplify what the band is all about. If you're looking for albums that stray a little more from their beaten path, go with:

- Recipe For Hate (more grunge-tinged)
- Stranger Than Fiction (a bit more mainstream-sounding)
- No Substance (criminally, criminally underrated album...it's slower and more thoughtful, and that's why I think many mainstream BR fans are turned off by it)

As for the rest:

- 80-85 -- This one's a collection of all of their earlier stuff (hence the name), and to be honest, most of it isn't very good. It's very, very rough around the edges, and you can hear the makings of what would eventually become BR in there, but save for a few songs, it's just too unpolished.
- Against The Grain -- A fan favorite, but IMO it gets a little repetitive. Still worth getting for the several tracks on there that are good, though.
- The New America -- Very mediocre album with only a few redeeming songs. Not recommended unless you're a completist.
- Tested -- Their only official live album, it's mixed fairly badly and doesn't have the greatest selection of songs. You'd be better off downloading a show.

BTW, Bad Religion are my favorite band, and I own their entire catalogue (as well as every B-side that I'm aware exists), so I'm happy to see the interest. Feel free to PM me if you've got any other questions.

PS - If at all possible, seek out Into The Unknown on the Internet. I think you'll be surprised, and, depending on how open your mind is and your tastes in music, it might be pleasantly so. ;)

Hey human5892, do you have their "Into the Unknown" album that was never rereleased? I snagged it in .mp3 if you need it. The keyboards are classic.

Yeah, I added that to my post in an edit. Honestly, I really do love the album. It's a shame the band seems so bent on forgetting about it.

Thanks for the pre-emptive .mp3 offer.

After getting asked by some kid today "who was that Minor Threat band and why did they matter?..." coming home to a thread like this is a relief of sorts.

No Substance-- their most underrated album. Many older-school fans don't like the slower style of this one, but it's one of my favorites. "Shades of Truth," "All Fantastic Images," "No Substance," "Sowing the Seeds of Utopia," "Voracious March of Godliness," "Same Person," and one of my favorite BR songs ever, "Strange Denial." Excellent collection of songs, excluding the two useless ones.
You have no idea how happy I am to find someone else who agrees with me about No Substance.

Stranger than Fiction. First album without mr brett.
Actually, STF was their last album with Brett before the Process reunion. He left the band shortly after the album's release.

Brett Gurewitz was the guitarist from the band from inception until Stranger then Fiction. Due to a lot of internal conflict, he left the band at this point and focused solely on running Epitaph (I believe). The sound of Bad Religion changed drastically at this point, from hard-edge, melodic punk to a softer, less punk-influenced sound. Gurewitz then rejoined the band for Process of Belief, which is IMO their best modern-day album.

AGAINST THE GRAIN

The Flat Earth Society is meeting here today, singing happy little lies,
And the bright ship Humana is sent far away with grave determination...
And no destination,

Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...

o how appropriate...
