Banjo-Threeie Debut Trailer!

Just watched all the videos.

WOW

Classic gameplay is intact, yet we have an entirely new set of gadgets and gameplay thrown in as well. Thankyou Rare for going the extra distance and innovating as well as evolving the classic series.

I love this logic.

So when they trash, lets say, a game like Too Human they are correct, but when they praise Banjo they are incorrect? :lol

I dunno about that, but positive previews should always be taken with a grain of salt.

Gaming sites give "glowing" reviews to merely passable games all the time.

NexusDK who posts in this very forum has been giving very "glowing" previews. Is he wrong as well?

You've obviously played more of the game than he has so feel free to enlighten us all.

Really though I'm enjoying this. Rare who has for decades been doing nothing but the same games as every other developer out there finally has the freedom to give a furry and feathery middle finger to everyone and do the kind of game they want to do.

As should negative ones, right?

Not so much. Negative (published) previews are pretty rare, and when you see one, it's a pretty good indication that a game is bad. Not always, but they're more reliable than glowing previews, which are often little more than regurgitated PR.

Looks like it might be interesting but I dont see myself liking it better than N64's versions. And whats up with the framerate .. Rare never really seems to focus on this aspect in there games..

it's 7 months from release. Early builds tend to have framerate problems. The only recent Rare game that had framerate issues at release was PDZ, which was rushed out for launch.

Annnd there went your credibility

Exactly.

People really don't like change do they?
people are not so much afraid of change as they are of what they percieve as negative changes. If a change is seen as positive I doubt people care so much about it being implemented.

Let me know when a negative hands-on with Banjo surfaces. :D
Bet there won't be ONE.

Yeah, that's what I also saw in the latest vid. Awesome.

credibilty on what? I haven't even said anything about the game in this thread anyway.

are you telling me that most game previews don't read like PR?

All reviews should not be taken seriously, but as an opinion. Whether it glowing or bad, its all the same.

Not every series needs to evolve. NiGHTS worked perfectly fine before they added all other sorts of bullshit gameplay options. Mario worked pretty well before they wanted to make his game a buddy-platformer (like Banjo-Kazooie, Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank).

I just thought of what the game reminds me of, and it's a Spore video with Will Wright from two years ago. That's what interests me about the vehicle customization, that it works (or doesn't work) just how I design it. I think what worries some people, myself included, is that the world won't be the right size for vehicular platforming, that it will either be too small for vehicles or too big for Banjo to have any fun in. Even though BK and BT weren't all about platforming, there's a concern that the game will focus on strictly non-platforming events, like how Jak II did, or that the emphasis of on-foot platforming will be greatly lessened.

EDIT: You know, if there were more platformers out there, I wonder if this would be getting the negative attention it has been here. The genre has been somewhat forgotten since the end of the N64/PSX/Saturn era and the return of one of the defining games of that generation being so very different is shocking and disappointing to some people.

I'm kinda reminded of the Toon Link backlash from the initial trailer of TWW in 2001.

Yes, thank you Ani. You put into words what I feel

Please shut up if you dont know what you are talking about. Its well known that previews are almost universally positive for any game and are worthless as a gauge for them

Who cares I'm done arguing with people I'm only going to be talking about the cool aspects of the game now.

It sounds like there are so many cool possibilities in this game. Rare has evolved and innovated.

First up was a simple task of collecting some coconuts as fast as possible. The ride provided was a simple basket and vacuum cleaner affair. Ride over the coconuts while avoiding small rocks that get in the way to grab the goods. We tried our hand at this one and found it not quite as easy as Rare made it look. Those enemies trying to block your progress are good at their job. Once we were shown the simple way of doing it, the team loaded up a craft made later in the game. It could fly and had the vacuum attached to the end of a chain dangling from the bottom. Without having to worry about any obstacles, the task was done in a snap.

The next challenge was a long jump that reminded me of Crazy Taxi. Zip down a ramp and take a jump to see how far you can make it. First we saw it with some rockets in place of an engine and a spring on the bottom to vault off the end of the ramp. Not bad, but it only scored a D. Then we saw the same attempt with a car that had a detachable ball cage. At the apex of the jump the ball was let loose to bounce its way along the ground. Sounds like a pretty creative way to solve the task, but even that wasn't enough to get an A.

But then, it's the creativity and ingenuity of the gamer that is going to spell success. A rocket works pretty nicely as a means of blasting a car along the ground. But what if you put a few on the bottom of the car? Now you have a hover vehicle. A spring works well for hopping along (you can create a vehicle that has no engines and just bounces if you want), but what if you put a spring on the side of a vehicle? Now you've got an offensive weapon in a race. It's up to you to solve each challenge. Rare is just providing the tools.

Too many blocks and you'll be left with a gas guzzling tank. Too few and you'll find enemies don't have much trouble bouncing you around. Put that rocket on backwards and you might find yourself spiraling out of control when you fire the engines. In the hands of the masses, we're going to see some truly special designs. Rare gave us a glimpse at that future with a car made to look like a profile of Mario…which the demoer then sent a volley of missiles at to destroy.

U mad?
First "people give good reviews to crap all the time" now "previews are un reliable."
You guys just can't allow yourselves to give this game a chance. :lol

Im done with this thread until new media surfaces.

Rare is back! Innovation is king. :D

U dum?

And maybe you are too hopped up on hype to have an opinion worth listening too.

I'm not even talking about this game. Glowing previews have always been unreliable. Period. You're so backed into your corner defending this game, you can't even have a rational discussion anymore. You're just lashing out at anyone you think is a threat in an attempt to defend the game. Find anywhere where I attacked this game or didn't give it a chance. Please.

If you look, you'll probably find that I like the concept and that I'm interested in playing the game, but the ultra-defensive posture of certain posters in this thread warrant more attention than the game itself.

Ya know that works the other way too right?
Maybe (obviously) alot of people are too drunk on the haterade to have an opinion worth listening to.

At least I respond with points and examples as much as I can..I dont tell people to "shut up" like you just did.
Anyways..I'm out this thread till new media comes.

Its just a disagreement about direction. You know, typical, especially for a game so long time coming

Yes, some of them waited 10 years with different ideas constantly growing in their gamer heads only to be stifled by the new truth.

Please leave them be.

Criticism is hating now. You heard it here first.

I have made my opinions known on this but at at least I dont dismiss them all, only the crazies...hint hint

more impressions here. This article is specifically and only about Banjo:

As a footnote, I just got a text message from one Ryan Davis, who claims “Banjo is effin sick.” He then went on to curse for reals, so I think you can safely say that we’re both pretty impressed with it.

I never said criticism was hating.
Don't bother to act like all the people in this thread on gaf hating on Banjo 3 are perfectly honest in their 'criticisms.'
The thread didnt go to shit like 20 pages ago because of TEH CRAZY HYPE TRAIN OPTIMIZM.

The trailer was definitely flawed.... but the main thing is that the game showed immense potential to become something really special. I'm looking forward to this one considering how there is still some time before release.

i cannot believe i was going to buy an xbox 360 just to play banjo 3. now this trailer? ugh im steering clear. even if it was a good game its obviously nothing like the original, why bother naming it banjo.

I agree that this is a platformer, but it's more of a platformer where you create the tools you need to get what you want.

So instead of mastering the double jump to get an item, you use the parts available to build something that allows you to get an equivalent ability.

I guess the only problem I have with this concept is that maybe people don't want to muck around in menus.

I see a lot of creative stuff coming from this game, but at the same time, I think part of the charm of a platformer is mastering very refined and polished mechanics and getting good at moving around the environment with those mechanics in a speedy yet controlled fashion.

When you introduce procedural physics and customization, you take the focus away from the mechanics and place it on the player's creativity. This is a double edged sword: You can use your head to figure out logical ways to approach problems, however the whole "proceduralness" of it may not provide a very consistently fun experience, because the physics are not consistent and you can't possibly polish the mechanics for every combination of parts.

So, yes it seems very experimental and it could be fun, but I feel like they'll need to be careful with it and ensure that it doesn't become some kind of game debug mode where you fuck with the mechanics and physics. Unless...that's where they're trying to go... but that's more like Pain than a platformer that allows the player to learn a smaller set of polished mechanics.

Graphic style, etc. looks great, but the framerate needs to be locked.
