Banjo-Threeie Debut Trailer!

And whether the whole formula ultimately works or not, the game at least looks astounding. Absolutely popping with bright colors, interesting textures, and fanciful character and art design, it already stands as a jaw-dropping showpiece for HDTVs. Even Banjo's fuzzy fur impresses, and the environments never take the easy way out: Nutty Acres features a giant LCD screen as a sky-blue backdrop, with sheet-metal clouds hanging in front and what looks like a stitched grass quilt stretching over the landscape.

Well, it sure doesn't come through in this trailer.

Just watched the trailer... hmmm ... not really that impressive. It looks like Kameo but with all the racing bits running at half speed for some reason. If this really is all the game has to offer, then it's unfortunately become a 'DO NOT WANT' game...

Damn, I was really looking forward to a nice AAA platform game this year but Banjo 3 fails the test.

Speaking as someone who thought B-K was good fun and B-T was underwhelming, this looks neat. As long as the vehicles don't result in even more utter tedium than running back and forth for transformations did.

Instead we get this vehicle game with Banjo slapped onto it.
I saw a Banjo game.

I saw EVERY one of the old Banjo mechanics, evolved.

What was in the old Banjo games that you guys didn't see here?

Seriously, fuck the usual cavalcade of NeoGAF haters who have already decided they won't be buying this game. I think it most importantly looks different and creative, I love the concept of creating contraptions to traverse, explore, and battle in the a great open envrionments (which is the real staple of BK that made it great is being carried over here).

I can't be the only person who likes racing/vehicle adventure games and platforming games? I'm amazed at all the people coming out of the woodwork who all of a sudden like platforming games only and are all "you mixed that peanut butter in my chocolate" do you people play only one type of game?

Another platformer was going to get overlooked but this concept is a huge breath of fresh air. Day 1 for me. Loved legos as a kid, cant wait for this.

What other platformer? There are none apart from Mario and Ratchet. A plat former is what Banjo 3 should have been not a Gummi Ship from Kingdom Hearts type spin off.

I'm not so sure about it. I think people want games to evolve, just as seen with Super Mario Galaxy, they just don't want a completely different game. But the vehicles make it look like kind of a racing or shooting game. In my opinion that idea can be compared the FLUDD in Super Mario Sunshine, it meant an immense change for the franchise.

If people would quit freaking out and stop posting like they are battered people and read some of the previews and impressions of people that played knows that this game has taken a turn for the better. So, in my eyes, this is a great way to evolve with something.

That trailer was the definition of bad taste. Ironing out the framerate could help a ton.

Icebeezy working overtime. lol, calling the detractors "sad" is definitely a case of throwing stones in a glass house.

No, actually, this is the only real time I've ever stood up for a game. It amazes me to still see the misinformed remarks about this game. I'm glad Rare doesn't live in the past like you all want them to do.

What the fuck is this shit.

Artstyle doesn't match the music.

Genre doesn't match the genre.
The music isn't in the game and is a remix from Kameo. There, now everyone can shut the hell up over it. It's just for the trailer.

Also: we can stop calling it "Banjo-Threeie"now. Please, just go with "Nuts and Bolts".

This is no excuse. There hasn't been a decent platformer this gen (with the exception of Ratchet and Mario), and I don't think there's a single one on 360 IIRC. I would have loved an HD Banjo game.

And that's precisely why I'm so frustrated. SMG provided the blue-print for three-dimensional platformers, but it seems developers are only interested in making accessible action games... with some jumping. I love, love, love Super Mario, but I wish there were more games for me to join in on the platforming fun.

That said, the original BK games were already scarce in the way of platforming, so perhaps we're all just expecting too much.

I used to hate the art style. "What did they do to the characters?!" But now I see the graphics/art style is the least of the game's problems.

The game just seems to have too much of a mechanical/stitch theme to it. I don't know, the first Banjo games just seemed so alive and organic.

Why do we make vehicles to glide over water? What happened to the running shoes?
Why do we make vehicles to soar in the air? What happened to the red feathers?

If there's a Jinjo or Jiggy out in a far off cave, I want to get Mumbo to transform me into a fucking helicopter to get it or something.

What the fuck is this shit?

Go for it guys. Come November, I'm going to be posting the ifuckingcalledit.gif and all haters will be eating crow.

Oh look, using a speedy vehicle (that's modeled as a bird).

And a glider.

And a submarine.

Oh wait, they're bipedal animals so running around and hitting things and gliding is considering platforming. If it's a vehicle doing those exact same things, WELL, that's a "vehicle game."

But it has puzzles, and you kinda platform with your car! At least they got some guts for trying something new, albeit the gameplay looks kind of slow and unwieldly. The cars definitely need to jump more, with more ramps and loopity loops.

That car building thing looks like the Kingdom Heart's gummy ship building piece... Occasionally enjoyable but most of the time a pain.

I was hesitant about the vehicle concept at first but the trailer has me feeling a little better. In the end I just hope Rare keeps the game fun and nails the controls. The essential parts of a platformer, even though this isn't a traditional platformer. Still needs good controls if you're going to base most of your game on vehicles.

This is like Rayman Raving Rabbids all over again. :/

I really like Rayman Raving Rabbids though but they should have just called it Raving Rabbids instead and just made a new character.

Did everyone just want another platformer?

People say this like it's a bad thing to 'just want another platformer'.
Yes, I'd like that. Super Mario Galaxy was 'just another platformer'.

A Platformer
BK = 3D action/adventure where you explore lots of enviroments fighting enemies and searching for objects and completing objectives

BK3 = 3D action/adventure where you explore lots of environments fighting enemies and searching for objects and completing objectives (now often using vehicles/contraptions to fight and help explore the environment)

The core of what made BK fantastic (great open worlds to explore and interact with) appears to be intact so I don't know what all the crying is about.

What? How could that be possible? This was pretty much the premiere platformer for the 360. There's no way it could've been overlooked, as it would have been the only AAA patformer on the console, not to mention the only AAA platformer to be released this year.

So people don't want platformers anymore unless Mario is in them? I guess the genre is pretty much dead now.

I'll be buying this day 1 because it's Banjo and it looks like a lot of fun. I was kind of hoping this would become a spinoff game and the real Banjo 3 is coming later but after reading that quote earlier it looks like this is the direction Rare is going with this ip now in my opinion.

Banjo Kazooie is one of my all time favorite games and loved exploring the overworld and I was one of those people who didn't mind collecting everything because I loved the game.

It's not a matter of old mechanics being gone, it's about them playing second fiddle to a host of new mechanics that no one has any interest in. I mean imagine if this is what Mario Galaxy was. Mario builds a bunch of vehicles to drive all over a huge landscape and solve vaguely-platform-themed vehicle challenges. Oh and occasionally he'll do some jumping on his own I guess.

This really does look like Ratchet and Clank, or Jak II. The similarities, in this admittedly brief trailer, are undeniable. And regardless of whether or not there is still some traditional platforming, the clear FOCUS is on this new shit.

People are acting as though Banjo games were suddenly Mario titles which revolve around precise jumping and running mechanics.

You guys are exactly like the ones who called Metroid Prime 1 a first-person-shooter and not a Metroid game.

Oh yeah? You say that as if Rare actually has a good track record over the past 8 years or so.

Viva Pinata was about the only Rare game that most people loved. Everything else was pretty flawed (or downright awful).

Ratchet was never designed to be a straight platformer and it seemed to offer more of it than this.

The platforming is gone because they do not want to go head to head with Mario Galaxy. Oh and beheading mario just reeks of "hey look how cool we are".

The music was fucking horrid, had to turn the sound off on that in the first 10 seconds.

It was a playful jest.

That said, my fears are realized

Looks interesting. Some really nice fur shading on Banjo, and interesting designs and good textures. Some of the scenery appear a bit epty-ish and the framerate is certainly rough in what of course must be very early build. Vehicle building seems to be big part of the game?

Seriously guys the focus is obviously away from platforming in this game, did you see how much trailer time they dedicated to UI?

It's needlessly complicated for just 3d platforming.

I'm just bitching because it's Banjo. Fuck it, it's not going to change anything. :D

You guys are crazy. All of the elements that populated the past Banjo-Kazooie games are clearly there.

-Flying in plane instead of flying with Kazooie or transforming into a flying animal.
-Using a four-wheeled vehicle to bash instead of transforming into a four-legged animal to bash.
-Using a water vehicle instead of turning into an aquatic animal or swimming
-Carrying objects, shooting things, special sections involving racing or a sport, it's all there.

The vehicles are just the transformations from the old games evolved. Why do you think MUMBO'S HUT is the place where you customize the vehicles?

That said:

I love that image! Imagine the crazy vehicles you'll be able to make in this game!

The size of that custom vehicle is crazy.

The gameplay itself looks cool.

It is a bit choppy running it seems, but hopefully that gets fixed by the time it is released. Also, it is a bit of a shame that everyone is so mechanical/static with a focus on vehicles because the bits you see Banjo move look fantastic in terms of animation, but it looks a bit out of place when he is the only thing animated that great. It is a style thing, but yeah.

I do also hope there is multiplayer of some kind in the game.
