Batman: Arkham Knight |OT| Protect Gotham Racing

I spent more time gliding in the air then driving on the roads, the only time I ever bothered to go down to the roads otherwise was to find riddler thugs.

The game really needed more inside areas, in the main quest you only go into a few buildings before you revisit them again and again.

I get what you're saying. Arkham Knight's Open World tends more towards 'Over-designed level selection menu' than it does 'Living, breathing City'. For as large as it is what does it add to the gameplay? Not much, other than enabling vehicle chases. It doesn't even really enable meaningful gameplay approaches in predator or freeflow combat (because you can glide to any area you'd like to start a fight from without the need for a large city).

I didn't mind it, but looking back at playing it for as big a part of the game as it is I didn't spend too much time being 'in' the open-world outside of heading to my next activity. There just isn't much of anything to do. Civilians could have helped in the moment-to-moment involvement with the city.

This.

The ability to engage a predator or combat segment from any direction counts as meaningful consider you wouldn't have nearly as many types of approaches for as large a number of scenarios in a linear, level-based game — it would all have to contextualized within a narrative rather than being side content added to an existing open world. If the milita checkpoints existed only in standalone levels, you likely wouldn't be able to land on the street below or a rooftop high above, nor would you be able to launch out of the Batmobile and through a window to start a fight, or take out snipers overlooking a checkpoint, use a makeshift line launcher perch to disable enemy guns/turrets then start a fight.

All the Arkham games have "hub worlds" in that they only serve to contextualize what are essentially challenge maps. None are believably structured environments, and that honestly better serves the gameplay.

The inclusion of civilians would certainly help with having "anything to do," but betond occasionally saving them from muggers, fires or bank robberies, they wouldn't accomplish much beyond (legitimately) adding to the ambiance. Having to avoid hurting them or putting them in danger would be interesting, but you already hear people complain about escort missions where you have to protect characters — can only imagine how people would react to having to watch their step throughout an open world game in which their movesets involve violent actions.

I think in using GTAV as an example, I was saying as that is the best of the best (as you agree). I wish there was just SOMETHING else in Gotham. I don't know, it just felt blah to me. Yes, it succeeds in providing an open world to get around with the Batmobile and side quests and everything, and while I'm glad it wasn't a Ubisoft open world, I just felt that it would have been better with actual people in it, or something. Maybe it was the way I played the game. I didn't really care about fighting the endless groups of thugs just standing around, nor did I care to assist the police or anything. I just didn't care. Maybe it's me. I admitted in an earlier post that maybe I just have Arkham fatigue.

As for your GTAV question, I like to think of it as having MORE detail than any other game. The size helps, but it was the number of people walking around, the number of cars on the road, the height of the skyscrapers, the day/night cycle....it has the things that most open world games has but more of it, I guess. I cared about this city. I would get involved in police chases, and rob people, and do other "fun" things.

What I would really like to see is a city the size of GTAV, but with the ability to go in to stores and buildings other than a few. A truly open world. Will we ever get that? I hope so.

You can't kill people in the Arkham games though. Don't know if it would've been worth the trouble in this instance considering the cost. They'd only be a backdrop for the most part in this game, and from what you describe, it sounds like that's what you'd want them for.

I'm toward the end of the main campaign, I remember that in order to get the real ending I need to solve all of the Riddler puzzles, do I need to do all of them before I'm finishing the campaign or after?

How does it work?

Thanks!

I just got to the Cloudburst section....

I can see why people had complained about this. I've loved the game so far, but it's starting to tax me. And all these Riddler trophies...I'm sure it's been asked but are there MORE than the last games? It sure seems like it.

You can finish it after beating the main string of missions.

Yeah, that part was a bit much. But I actually still enjoy the Batmobile more than I hate it.

I'm over 50% of the way through the game and I SILL click L2 to brake instead of Square. >_>

Quoting for a new page. I searched around and found some posts from a month ago that said it was all fixed by an update, but I'm on the latest update so it can't be that. Maybe it's not fixed for everyone, or the probelm was re-introduced, or what? Is it working for anyone?

Leaderboards have never worked for me,

Man, I suck at these bomb disarm missions. I'm just seem to get overwhelmed from every angle lol.

Just read it, so finish the main string of missions and than 100% the game before initiating the first ending, gotcha!

You can change the Batmobile control settings so L2 would be a brake, It's in the options.

Having made a good way into collecting the Riddler Trophies I have to say that I am enjoying this a lot less here than in Arkham City. If I'm not mistaken, the trophies were pretty much all tied to puzzles in AC, here there are a lot of them that are just lying out in the open, albeit in an out of the way place. Although what puzzles are there are all pretty great, especially the ones where you have to use the batmobile.

I thought in Arkham City it was sometimes a little too much, the city almost felt it belonged to Riddler considering how many green questionmarks were everywhere, but I agree that just picking up a trophy is always the lamest way to get one.

Yeah this Cloudburst fight is the worst. It's so hard to navigate the environment.
I've destroyed its main cannon though...

Edit: nevermind. Got 'em

Between the car stuff, the worse handling of villains, the worse riddler stuff, the worse side stuff, my ranking is definitely:
AC>AA>AO>>>>>>>>>>>>AK

I really didn't like this game much at all. I loved the other three.

There is a riddler trophy way up high on a roof next to a box that can be operated by bat mobile winch. How am I expected to get the Batmobile way up there?

There's a parking garage nearby that you used in the main story at one point.

also, quoting for new page:

I made a thread about open world Gotham, if anyone here's interested. It's not really about what I'd want, but just a general list of things to consider.

I should've added "Batman: Arkham Knight is the best Arkham game" in the title somewhere — that would've gotten more replies.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, there should be a parking garage somewhere across the street. Drive all the way to the top of it, and you should see a ramp. Drive off the ramp onto the next roof, and you should be close enough to use the winch.

Yea I agree with everyone that the Cloudburst was pretty bad, I only died like once or twice there but it was still very tedious and annoying, easily the worst part of the game.
I would probably say that the all
city under the fear toxin part wasn't very good with the cloudburst being the worst

But still I wouldn't say it tarnished the game too much, it's still a great game imo, even if AC was better at the time, you might say that's a little disappointing, but nevertheless it was a great experience overall and I thought that for the most part the Batmobile did more good than harm, it was a good addition that could be handled a little better next time but I'm happy they implemented it because without it the game would feel pretty stale and iterative,

Finished the game earlier and all I have to say is it's start great and finish flat

The Good:
- Graphics are fiiine, technically and visually impressive.
- Goddamn Joker
- The main story is good though I suspect it to be very very veered short without the subquests
- Arkham knights reveal was cool, a few surprises, barb's "death", Ivy..
- Games Bruce Wayne is soooo cool.
- Flyiiiing
- Infiltration for the few times it's useful

The Bad:
- Short main story
- A lot of nonsense, like let's put road bombs overtime even though only thugs are populating the city now...
- The useless augments such as the mines thing....

The inexcusable
- Fuck that bat mobile, fun in the beginning and the too much os too much
- The fucking "nonexistent" boss battles which are not even battles. The best ones are Pyg's and Riddler which are the only real battles (almost big-up for the arkham knight).
- The sub-quest are horrible, repetitive, not fun at all and no interest at all for the story.
- Vilains out of nowhere for the sake of putting more vilains in.

I'm this close to just giving up on Riddler trophies. Some of the "scan" ones are just so obscure.

You are talking about the ones when you drive around in the Batmobile scanning question marks?
I only encountered one of those and I didn't understand what do i need to do, i followed the marks until they ended and now what?

No I mean where the riddler gives you a clue about something you need to take a "photo" of.

For you though you just keep following the ?s and you'll eventually see either a wall you need to break or something where the clue is hidden.

Yea I really looked everywhere and couldn't figure it out, should I get out of the car in such segments to look around or are those riddles are with the car only?

And yea I agree with you about scanning, I used to get tons of those while playing in previous entries and this time i could hardly solve any of them, they are very obscure.

I did my best to piece together the different locations from the Arkham games, primarily based on where Arkham Knight shows them to be. Not everything fits together right because the games are not consistent, and the outside land masses are only vague approximations. I did not take the time to note every curve and crevice of those.

The most notable mismatch is that Knight shows Arkham City to be rotated slightly counterclockwise with the bridge seemingly sprouting from the southernmost part and moving straight south. The buildings match the Knight map at this angle but the streets dont, this is not how it was in Origins.

I dont know where to put Blackgate. It's said to be an island in the bay somewhere, but then it also got converted to a shopping mall on the mainland. All I know is that it's somewhere around New/South Gotham. Possibly on the mainland just southwest of it, possible in the water south below the picture frame.

A few of those are really obtuse as you're only given a general area as to where they are, sometimes as big as a city block, and the thing you have to scan is no bigger than a poster. There's also one where the mission marker shows it on ground level, but it's actually underground.

I would just use a guide if you get stuck on any one of those. There's a lot more vertical space seamless interiors which gives a lot of different places the answers could be in. Doesn't always require clever thinking so much as it does scouring every inch of the highlighted area.

Yeah the one I'm stuck on is where
Poison Ivy's Flower is after the Cloudburst mission.
The marker makes it look like it's way high up but I've scanned everywhere-can't find it.

That's pretty cool. I suspected there were discrepancies, even ignoring Origins.

Would be cool to have a comprehensive overworld, including Wayne Manor, in a game someday.

Thanks guys. Sidenote, I think it's funny that Bruce has to drive such a long ass way to get his batmobile to the islands. Hopefully he's got a secret underwater tunnel between the batcave and Founders Island because otherwise he's going to be stuck in traffic on the way to the heist. Or does Arkham Batman just have the batwing drop him and his car off each night?

Just finished playing the Matter of Family DLC for myself

+ Love the suit design for Batgirl. Harley's original TAS design looked great, too.
+ The abandoned amusement park setting works really well
+ Liked that it ended with a (somewhat) traditional boss fight
+ Batgirl's combat animations are really cool.

- The hacking mechanic is really shallow, both in and out of combat.
- Batgirl plays like a poor man's Batman. It's like a weird middle ground between the fluidity of City & Knight, but with the combat options (read: not many) of Asylum.
- Pretty short, even after finding the collectables.
- Level/Encounter design doesn't really do much to set it apart from the main game, or even the rest of the series.

Overall, I think it's okay, but nothing special. I think it's definitely better than Harley Quinn's Revenge in Arkham City, but doesn't quite match Cold, Cold Heart from Origins, in both length and quality. Hopefully Season of Infamy and Gotham City stories will be a little more involved.

Have WB/Rocksteady said anything about whether or not she'll be available to use in future challenge maps? It'd be nice if she did. We already know she'll be getting downloadable skins at some point, anyway.

Just finished the main story. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't seriously disappointed. There were so many things that Rocksteady did right. The graphics were great, hand-to-hand combat felt great especially when you mixed it up with gadgets, gliding all over the city was incredibly fun. Scarecrow had a fantastic performance throughout the game and
The Joker
made your experience far better (or more tolerable)
as he commentated on your every move.
I really enjoyed Poison Ivy in this game as well.

Then we get into the things that were just awful (mainly the Batmobile) The Batmobile was garbage and the fact that they surrounded probably more than half of the main quest around it really took away from the game for me. It was beyond frustrating and I never got any enjoyment out of using it other than running shit over in car mode (because battle mode fucking sucked) and launching missile barrages. They essentially forced the use of the Batmobile at every opportunity they could find and it destroyed the experience, IMO.

Also, the Arkham Knight's identity was obvious from start, but they made it even more obvious when
The Joker started telling the tale of Jason Todd and how he tortured him.
I mean, can you make it any more obvious after that point? Also, what happened to the boss battle battles? I loved the boss battles from Arkham City and Asylum and they are pretty much nonexistent here.

I went through some of the side quests before my file corrupted, but from what I played, a lot of them were repetitive trash and had nothing to do with the main quest, so I literally had no motivation to really play through them when I started over. I'm not even sure I want to after experiencing a good portion of the Riddler's quests (yuck) and some others now that I am done with the main story line.

Overall, this is easily my least favorite Arkham game between me beating Asylum, City, and now Knight (didn't play Origins). I loved City and Asylum equally for different reasons, but I had a preference for Asylum. Arkham Knight falls well below both of those games for me. I enjoyed some parts of the game, but other elements really sucked the fun out the game for me.

This is probably old news, but wow, the batmobile controls so much better when you don't touch the right stick at all while driving to adjust the camera. Just let the camera adjust itself as you make turns, and you aren't constantly hitting buildings and assorted obstacles while turning like some drunk driver.

Probably wouldn't have figured this out on my own if I didn't read another forum thread as it flies in the face of how I've controlled vehicles in other games, but the batmobile so much more responsive now and therefore more enjoyable to use. Now I just need to get a hang of power sliding and I'll be set.

This is the first game I have finished 100%. Loved all of it. Sure parts were frustrating (those cobra tanks) but otherwise it's a brilliant achievement in storytelling and gameplay.

Do you all think the season pass is worth it? I really want to play the batgirl DLC now. I'm heavily debating it.

Nightwing's move for the "disarm and destroy" input is pretty sweet. I sincerely hope that character DLC provides some opportunity to use character specific moves more. It'd also be great if each character got their own upgrades like Batman — there's a lot of potential there.

Dammit I'm so close to finishing the game but I can't stop the second fan. Running in circles
this should help you:

Based on what's come out so far, I don't think it'll be worth full price, but for half of that (if you're interested in everything being offered) was worth it to me, considering I got the base game free. Don't have a link handy, but everything's been outline (not fully detailed though). Not sure whether story DLC is considerable like Origins' euqivalent.

I have to say I didn't really mind the Cloudburst fight, got it on one go on hard. At a certain point I think I had the tank in a loop, I could easily fire off a shot when I had its main cannons down and go to cover quickly, rinse and repeat.

Now that
60
tank battle at the
GCPD
was kind of ridiculous. Frustrating too, if you fail the mission you see a little cutscene and seeing that once is okay, seeing it four to five times is just frustrating.

I did not see the AK reveal coming though, good choice imo.

Ok I want to make sure that whoever Came up with these Riddler trophies never works in game design again. There's a difference between challenging and frustrating. I'm trying to do this one and just cannot pull it off in time.

Head to the Penitence Bridge leading to Founders' Island, and look under the bridge for an elaborate setup of multiple question switches, two pads, and a Riddler Bot. Use the synthesizer to tell the Bot to stand on one pad, and then look for the locations of the four switches. Two of them are out of sight on the other side of the bridge column. To circumvent this, walk over and spray exploive gel on each of them. Then, detonate them, and immediatley send batarangs at the remaining switches to unlock the trophy.

Well, two things that you may already be doing but:
- Batarangs first, detonate explosives after. That way if you mess up you wont have to reapply the gel, simply don't detonate if the batarangs don't connect.
- Keep the gel gadget equipped, quickshoot batarangs with left trigger. Don't go around switching gadgets mid-puzzle.

Thanks so much. I was focused on detonating first then batarangs. Reverse order fixed it!

Question about the riddler collectables.

I can't find any more thugs to interrogate on Bleake Island. Why is that? Do I have to start collecting things on other islands and then come back? Same with Panessa studio, I don't have any riddle stuff marked in there.

The Riddler stuff is the only thing I have left. And it's so tideous. Ugh. Wish you could free roam with any character to get them.

So change to the alternate controls so you can brake with L2.. It's what I did an hour in and haven't looked back.

Wow, yeah, I changed that a few missions into the game. Can't imagine playing through the entire game with the default controls. If I had to hold L2 the entire time during those drone fights (which seem to get longer and longer the further you get) I think I really would have hated it. And yeah, I also kept trying to use L2 to brake until I changed it. It's just more intuitive.

I really don't understand why those weird controls are the default. I guess the idea is that you quickly jump into and out of battle mode? Well, you don't really do that. You enter battle mode, stay in it for some time, and then go back to pursuit mode. A toggle just works better.
