Batman: Arkham Origins Review Thread

This isn't true at all lol
I still can't get over how they completely messed up aiming control.

Though I still liked Uncharted 3 so that isn't THAT bad of comparison to me anyway, doubly so when the Arkham games were more my flavor to begin with. Nevermind that I don't think anyone making that comparison even played the game yet...

I'm quite excited about this game. I loved the first two (especially City) and I'm just happy to see more of the same (but even better hopefully).

I imagine that a lot of reviewers will not be able to get past the fact that Rocksteady didn't make this game.

Prejudice will be prominent.

Two of my favorite games this generation, but I am not feeling this one, either. What they showed at comic con looked good, though.

I will more than likely buy this game tomorrow.

I heard that they removed the Riddler trophies from this game, is that true?
If so, are they replaced with something else to boost post game content? (more riddles to solve, sidemissions, etc.)

I'm sure I'll love this game either way since these are some of my favorite games this gen just for the feel of the combat. I can't get enough of it!
BUT I'm going to hold off on this since I've got a ton of other games to play at the moment (and Castlevania's $15 right now on Amazon, haha).

I'll probably pick up at its first sale, hopefully the Steam Winter sale.

Keeping expectations in check is important. Quality was secondary in the Asylum to City transition, scope and change leaving the biggest impact. It felt very different in key areas.

Origins isn't going to have that because the template is City, regardless of its own changes and additions.

I'm somewhat interested in this on Wii U, but man - so many sequels. What happened to the good old days of letting 4 years go by with each instalment? Get some real innovation?

Madden happened, and suddenly it dawned on execs that they could maximize profits just taking a successful product, tweak it a bit and release it the next year again until the market burns out on it, if they do at all.

Interested to see how I am going to take this game during my review. I wasn't a massive fan of the first.

I'm simultaneously reassured and slightly worried by the VG review, glad that it's still lauded, but slightly worried by the possibility of it's notable overlap with city. still looking forward to it though.

Why do franchises always fuck up on the third game? Crysis 3, uncharted 3, dead space 3, mass effect 3. The reviews for this game aren't out yet but I think it'll all in line with the third game curse.

Yep, same for me. Except for me it's especially Asylum ;), but I still loved them both regardless.

Will be a few days before I have the funds to purchase, which is unfortunate since I can't take advantage of any of the pre order deals. Made worse by the fact that I have the next four days off. Ah well. lol

It it me, or are the textures in the game dated? The DOF and AA help mask it but, once I went outside into the over world, it felt like I time-traveled back a few years. (PC, max settings)

As usual, the good old days end up being a fabrication. 2 years? Sure. 3 years? Mmmmaybe. 4 years? That's nearly all of a console generation.

Will this Batman be a case of,"Well, I didn't expect much" so now people won't TRY to hate on it so too hard? It's funny how we play mind games with ourselves and end up liking or disliking something based off our expectations. Maybe this is why I end up liking a lot of the games I play, since most of them are older games that are out of the spotlight and my critical eye.

Here are my impressions, cross post from ot:

Played a few hours today, don't want to beat it all in one sitting.

Ok, I'm a fan of AC/AA, liked AA, liked AC more than AA.

-> The music is fantastic
-> The graphic/art assets are fantastic. Even AC looks fresh with the new assets they put in it. The dx11 features are great, I usually sit at 50-60 fps with everything on except physx. Core i5 and HD 7950. Honestly surprised this game isn't being put out on PS4...
->The animations are fresh, they aren't copy pasted from aa/ac. There are ones that look similar like pulling grates off the wall (he has a scowl on his face when he does it) or when you right trigger + y finish someone (he does two fists instead of one).
->The intro is fantastic. I haven't made it to the second boss fight yet, but I enjoy doing Crimes in Progress and I really want to knock out the collectibles.
->Deathstroke is pretty awesome, I hope they work him into a dlc. I didn't beat the 100 man challenge (no upgrades yet), got to 60/100. He has regenerating health and it seems he can take more hits than batman. He also pulls grates off the wall. I didn't play red robin in AC, so I don't know how similar the animations are to him. His animations and moveset does feel like it fits him well. My only disappointment is that he doesn't use his sword (instead uses his staff).

Please understand, this game isn't a cash in. Its a sincere effort from WB Montreal and its pretty awesome. If this came out before AC did it would have recieved the same reception. However I haven't played more than 2-3 hours so far, these are my initial impressions. Maybe the game falls apart and is unfinished toward the end, but I'm doubting it.

No multiplayer impressions yet, saving that for when I beat the game.

It only gets better.

Oh wow, I didn't realize you go back to the Arkham City environment, am I hearing that right? I thought they would build a new gotham to hang out in or something. Haven't really been paying attention.

There's the Arkham City section and a whole new Gotham section.

How on earth was UC3 a fuck-up? And for the most part, ME3 was actually pretty decent, it was just the ending which was ridiculous.

Is this more AC or AA? I didn't much care for city's open world approach.
I dunno man. This is Batman we're talking about here. He needs to be flying around a city or it's not Batman. If someone in a bat suit is confined to a small place like an asylum, they'd just be a cosplaying mental patient

Persona 3 was a really good third game in the Persona franchise.

Little preemptive there saying this game is going to fuck.

Hey guys, news flash, this is the best game in the best new series this gen.

- Better story (You care for once!)
- Better music (Probably the best Batman soundtrack un any médium)
-Better combat! (Deeper, faster, harder)
-Great sound design (absolutely impressive)
- Varied locales (Even side missions have their own enviroment. Almost Zero recycling)
- Bigger world (A taste of the inevitable next gen full gotham)
- The same killer gameplay.
- First half reminiscent of City, second half is Asylum on steroids.

Granted, it could be a case of a sequel that is good because of luck of the little needed improved, but wb montreal nailed it.

I like you. No hyperbole, just straight facts.

It is going to be somewhat disappointing going back to non-angry and chill with the police Batman when the next one comes out. Pissed off, fuck-the-world Batman is so much better.

So you score it a 10 out of Yes?

I hear the story is pretty stupid, but I can probably overlook a story for solid gameplay.

Here's hoping the game is good, but genuinely more interested in wider impressions or a demo since I find they are more useful for forming an impression myself.

I might wait and see though what the DLC program is like before committing though.

Personally I preferred Asylum so I like hearing that some people think this is more like that than City.

Just play the video game if YOU like it then that's all that matters.

Understand this is not from rocksteady and that this is a prequel.

I think people like to compare every good game to new games then the new game looses what it has.

Some form of this comment pops up in every review thread haha

no offense of course, your point is a valid one

Okay I have a really important question for the people who have the game. It will make or break my decision to buy it. Does Barbara look as ugly as she does in that released screenshot?

What? Mechanically AC is undoubtedly the better game.

I meant in terms if impact it left on people. Quality is one thing, but drastic changes to the formula leave a stronger impression. Much of the delight of playing Arkham City was that it wasn't Asylum 2.0. It built off those foundations but still went on to construct its own systems that differed it from the original. You went from a relatively confirmed Metroid-like structure to an open city overworld that gave you the freedom to explore at your own leisure. It gave you something instrumental to the design of the game that Asylum never had.

Origins isn't going to have that, and I think Rocksteady are going to have a hard time one upping that leap with whatever their next Batman is too. No matter how good Origins is, it's going to be a game based on what City did. It might even be the better game, but it won't leave the same immediate impression.

I just hope people keep that expectation in check. It may very well be superior to City, if not as original.
