Batman: The Killing Joke receives R rating

Why's that? Because that's what the film practically does to the original Bolland art.

Yikes.

Was hoping it would get the same love Dark Knight Returns Part 1 & 2 got.

I'm so happy they are finally doing a Batman and Doug crossover.

Haha pretty much this.

Reminder: this is what The Killing Joke actually looked like -

Overall, the animated adaptation seems to stick closer to the original art in most of its more iconic scenes, which the shot (a single frame!) everyone is freaking out about isn't. It's not an important scene and the Joker goon is supposed to look like an awkward schmuck. It's not the prettiest frame, but it really shouldn't ruin the whole film for you.

That's not the Joker. It's some random dopey dork wearing Joker makeup.

The animated Dark Knight Returns films got pretty close to R rated. If it was a live action film, I can't imagine people saying it was PG-13.

The really bland artstyle is dissapointing. The R rating seems the least they could do for the source material.
Feels strange to see THE Killing Joke getting this treatment.

so much truth, the film looks great, DC said in the preview that it was imposible to mimic Bolland's art, so they went with another artist for inspiration , wait till the movie comes out instead of judging it on a single frame

Well I watched Flashpoint Paradox last night. I am shocked that wasn't R. Not sure how they got around it. Maybe the Netflix version is unrated? I forgot to check.

The art style looks fine to me, just the animation is stiff.

There's a lot of other great Batman/DC stories they could have done. It's not even Barabara's role in the story, just the story is pretty weak for Alan Moore's usual output.

I hope we get Kingdom Come someday, and it's a 2 parter with TDKR's budget.

It's one of Moore's most "comic book" comic stories. I mean, the opening pages of Swamp Thing reads like a good novel, The League' is so far out there even for the comics of the era, and Watchmen was the Watchmen. The Killing Joke feels like it could have been written by any solid creator of the time.

No, it's just one of those really surprising ratings for a film. I'm not even sure you could really justify it with "well, it's just animated" given how nasty it gets.
