Batman v Superman follows the trend of the underperforming blockbuster in China

Just get 800 million WW so I don't have to worry about not getting a Batfleck trilogy (at the very least). I dont care about anything else. To hell with it. I just want it to make 800m so it breaks even/profits.

I was about to say that 800M worldwide would be very, very bad for a film with these characters and this much riding on it.

Then I realized that doubling down on Batman over the other JL members would be one of the most likely responses from WB.

I loved BvS, but if they demand this has aChinese feel then Ken Watanabe is playing Darkseif. Which would be amazing actually but wouldn't help them at all in China

I think one of the real issues with the pattern of "underperforming" is that China's market is changing so fast that even analysts and distributors have no real idea what they are talking about when they make their predictions.

For the domestic market you have over 30 years of data covering hundreds of blockbusters, with very stable (mostly single digit) growth annually).

China's market has been growing 20-60% annually, with domestic Chinese films driving most of that growth in the last 2-3 years. Individual movie performance has been all over the place. At the start of 2014, the record gross in China was still Avatar with a bit over $200M. Two years later, that record has jumped to $500M, and several films a year are hitting the $200M+ mark.

China doesn't even know who Bugs Bunny is

they lived in iron curtain shrowd that filtered through what content they got

I dated a mainland Chinese girl for a few weeks and broke up with her because she did not know who Bug Bunny was. Deal breaker

Movie already did 400m+ opening weekend worldwide. It would have to bomb pretty hard from here out to not make 800m. I think it'll end around a billion or so
I think it's going to end up just shy of $1B. I figure anywhere from 900 to 950 million at this point. Hardly a bad result by any stretch although I'm sure they're hoping for bigger.

i just have a feeling the big billion is just going to elude them.

I wonder how much of this was due to Easter Sunday, but even in the US: Forbes: 'Batman v Superman' Sets Record With Worst Friday-Sunday Drop For A Superhero Pic

Indeed, according to the figures I’ve compiled from Boxofficemojo.com, Batman v Superman has set a new record for the worst Friday-to-Sunday drop for a superhero movie release in modern North American box office history. In dropping 55% from its $82 million Friday debut to its $37 million gross on Sunday, it pummeled all prior records for weakness in theatrical staying power. It even beat the nearly universally reviled and now long-forgotten Fantastic Four reboot, which dropped a comparatively modest 48% across its opening weekend in the summer of 2015.

You might be thinking that Sunday was the Easter holiday, which could account for the big Sunday drop. But that still wouldn’t explain the Friday-to-Saturday decline of 38%, which was the second worst opening Friday-to-Saturday drop in the annals of superhero releases, after a 40% dip for The Dark Knight Rises.

Better topic for the US box office thread, where it's been mentioned, but without a source so thanks for the link. I think the school week and Easter plays into it but it's still not a good early sign (FF7 from this weekend from last year held much better). One I suspect will be followed in other territories.

With actuals the drop was 60% Fri-Sun, BTW. He's using the estimate from yesterday to get 55%.

Tbf Chine is in recession (I think its that bad) so this does not shock me.

The box office is up 50% year over year in China. They just had a domestic Chinese film doing over $500 million last month, and this month Zootopia in China is pretty much keeping pace with the US ($241 million in US vs $200 million in China).

That is some recession.

Different culture, different expectations for films. If I had to generalise, the Chinese audience don't like overly complicated movies with deep themes - they want spectacle and a straightforward plot.

I often used my in-laws to gauge what Chinese audiences want - they loved Captain America 1 but criticised The Winter Soldier and "overly complicated" story and long stretches of "boringness" (although they loved the action). They also loved Transformers 1-4 but weren't too hot on The Martian. :/

That's a bit of a generalization, but there is something to it. That something is that dialog really gets lost in translation. That's why witty comedies and dramas often struggle when translated as well. Action scenes and physical comedies transcend language barriers.

While not representative of the Chinese market, BvS has dropped significantly in Hong Kong as well.

It had outgrossed the other films by quite a margin, but has dropped 40% in four days compared with Zootopia (second from top) which barely lost 10%.

I guess that is fair and why animations like Zootopia that have localisation can do well. I have seen the sloth scene clip translated into every Chinese dialect on the internet. Although, I'm not sure language barrier is the only thing that makes BvS confusing, better editing would help too.
