Biography
Considering that Brandon Flowers is a name-dropping disciple of Bono and Morrissey, it's a wonder the Killers frontman didn't reduce his stage name to a mono-moniker. But he and his Las Vegas-based bandmates have successfully emulated the sort of rising-action anthems that made U2 and the Smiths famous, albeit with more keyboards and fewer literary references.

All the band members—including singer-keyboardist Flowers, guitarist Dave Keuning, bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr.—were working odd jobs and playing in various local bands in Las Vegas when the line-up finalized in 2002; an early track, the jealous-lover lament "Mr. Brightside," helped the Killers land a deal with Island Records.

The resulting debut, Hot Fuss (Number Seven,2004), proved that the Killers were not only first-rate second-wavers — song like "On Top" and "Somebody Told Me" (#51, 2004) were awash in synths — but also that the increasingly ailing major-label environment could still nurture a multi-platinum rock band. Fuss sold three million copies in the United States, and yielded five singles: "Somebody Told Me," "Mr. Brightside," "All These Things I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It."

While touring behind the album, the Killers developed a reputation for slightly unearned grandiosity, perhaps best exemplified by the group's decision to hire a gospel choir for its 2004 set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The band's infamy was increased via a string of mildly controversial interviews, in which Flowers crowed to the lap-it-up rock press — which had been starved for memorable lead singer in the post-grunge era — about the band's superiority, picking fights with acts like Fall Out Boy and the Bravery.

Such bravado didn't take away from the late-night joys of Hot Fuss, but it did set the group up for a backlash, one they egged on even further with the release of its follow-up album, Sam's Town (Number Two, 2006). The lead-off single, "When You Were Young" reached Number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, though successive releases — "Bones" (Number 21 Modern Rock, 2006), "Read My Mind" (Number 62, 2007), and "For Reasons Unknown" — proved less captivating, and Town sold only one-third the amount of copies as its predecessor in the United States, although it nearly matched Hot Fuss worldwide. A B-sides collection, Sawdust (Number 12) followed in 2007. The band's third album of originals, Day & Age, was set for a late 2008 release.

Hard to believe its been 4 years since the last album. I'm ready.

It feels like yesterday when I first listened to Day and Age... such good times. 4 years is too much, though I still listen to the live songs from Live From Albert Hall. I had the DVD but I someone stole it from me.

When is this coming out?

No real date set yet, I'd say between september-november.

I hope its a lot more Hot Fuss and a lot less Sam's Town/Day and Age.

Sams Town is my favorite album, but I agree. Their Hot Fuss era was epic.

I'll just post this video already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=G0l5DU0WXC0

When You Were Young is probably my favorite Killers track, but Hot Fuss is such a great album all the way through.

Such an awesome song. Mine is 'Read My Mind', which might as well be my favorite song ever.

I hope its a lot more Hot Fuss and a lot less Sam's Town/Day and Age.

Maybe it's just me but those two albums don't really sound much like each other. Spaceman wouldn't look out of place on Sam's Town, that's about it.

(also Day and Age blew so much it was unreal and Sam's Town is my favourite of theirs so yeah)

More Day & Age AND Hot Fuss, please. I fucking love Day & Age. It's so good.

I love all their albums, including Day & Age, but some of the songs sound bad in their studio versions. I much prefer to listen to them live (especially Spaceman and Losing Touch).

Wow I can't believe it has been 4 years. Day and Age was good, but probably my least favorite album of theirs. Hopefully we get more Hot Fuss/Sam's Town

Well since we are rating their album I will take a swing at it

Sam's town>Hot Fuss> Brandon's solo album>>>the other two albums

Though Hot Fuss has my favorite songs by them, I feel Sam's town sounds better as an overall album.

Hearing synthesis in that YT video is a step back in the right direction.

I've liked various songs from later albums, but not nearly as much as I loved the synth- / 80s New Wave sounds running through Hot Fuss.

The Killers are one of 3 groups whose albums I'm guaranteed to pick up right away (along w/ Foo Fighters and Paramore). They do not disappoint.

Adored every Killers album, and I hope this is the same. Very excited to hear it. I actually can't believe it's been this long. I'm pumped!

I've saved that special on my DVR for over a year. It's so good.

Don't care for Brandon's new 'do, but eh.

I'm more of a fan of Hot Fuss and Sam's Town (they're about even in my book), but Day & Age has a couple greats too.

The teaser was great, the feel of it and the title of the album make me very excited for the album itself. I think they'll really deliver on it.

Day & Age is a notch below the first two but has one of my favorite Killers' songs in "This Is Your Life".

Obviously buying the new album day one.

The Killers Open Up About Their 'Difficult Fourth Record'

Coming up in Las Vegas, the Killers learned a trick or two from the casinos, like not having any clocks on their studio walls. They have spent the past year here working weekdays, noon to midnight, on their upcoming LP, Battle Born, and it's still not done. "It's living up to its title," says drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr., sitting in the control room about a mile from the Strip. "This is our difficult fourth record."

After touring and recording nonstop from 2004 to 2010, the Killers took a year off to focus on side projects. "It was like being in training," says frontman Brandon Flowers. "I was keeping myself not just occupied, but ready." To better prepare himself for the Killers' return, he even took singing lessons. Flowers seems nervous as he says this, his right leg vibrating like a jackhammer. "We haven't done interviews in a while," he adds apologetically.

The band has brought in multiple A-list producers since reconvening – including Brendan O'Brien, Steve Lillywhite, Daniel Lanois, Björk collaborator Damian Taylor and dance-music maven Stuart Price. "It's a little bit our fault," Flowers says. "We thought we would wait to see what the album was before we pulled the trigger on who we wanted." Adds Vannucci, "We're not used to splitting up our brains like that."

Yet for all the different hands on the soundboard, Battle Born always sounds like the Killers. "We write a very particular type of song when we get together," Flowers says. "So many people try to find something wrong with it, but I'm not embarrassed by it." Highlights like "Heart of a Girl," "Flesh and Bone" and "Carry Me Home" follow a familiar template – beginning slowly before exploding in a glitter bomb of guitars and huge vocals.

Another standout track, "Runaways," is a galloping arenaready cut that dates back to the night of a bad gig in Santa Barbara, California, in 2009. Frustrated by the apathy of the crowd, the band returned to its tour bus to work on the tune. Vannucci remembers, "We were like, 'Fuck that show, this song is great!'"

The Killers suffered a tragedy in late April, when saxophonist Tommy Marth, who played on their past two albums and joined them on tour, committed suicide. "He was a crazy motherfucker, but in a great way," Vannucci says. "He would joke about serious stuff, but always throw it into the comic realm. Nobody ever said, 'Tom, you OK, dude?' We wrote a new song a couple of weeks ago, and we were thinking about having him come in to play on that, but it never happened."

Battle Born (which is also what the Killers named their studio) takes its title from an unofficial nickname for their home state. "In a sense, all Americans are battle-born," Flowers says. "Our ancestors came here for something better."

For now, the band is still grinding away toward a tentative fall release date. "It gets harder as you get older," adds the singer, who turns 31 this month. "You want to put in the same effort, and find the same focus you had when you knew you didn't want to work at the casino anymore. We're working it out."

So hyped for this. 4 years since D&A? Insane. Don't get the Day and Age dislike, though. Dustland Fairytale is one of the best songs The Killers have ever created and one of my favorite songs.

Me neither. It's a great album with lots of very good songs. I'm a fan of both their older style (Hot Fuss) and their newer style (Day and Age) so I think I'll be happy with whatever Battle Born sounds like.

Battle born and the new animal collective album = fantastic year in music.

In fact, this year has already been a step up compared to last.
