Here are my thoughts on this game for what it is worth:
First off I am a big battlefield fan and I have played and enjoyed every game in the series (even hardline!). I am also pretty good a BF games in particular 3-4 KD (Blah blah blah).
Conquest: Passible but the maps are a little too big which leads to lots of down time. Also, because of the size of the maps conquest is even more sniper heavy than previous titles. IMO Conquest is a dated mode that hasn't been good since BF4.
Breakthrough: OMG this is an incredible mode and IMO is the best battlefield game mode. Its like rush but 10 times better as it borrows from conquest as well. The matches feel more cinematic and "war-movie-like" with non-stop chaos going on at a well defined front line. The attacking team really needs some teamwork to push through as popping smokes, and moving cover to cover is paramount to advance on the entrenched defense. There isn't a better Multiplayer experience out there. Sadly BF 2042's breakthrough has some problems as well. For one, the devs made the idiotic mistake of putting capture points on top of buildings in a mode were the defense has enough players (64) to cover every point of entry. Making it impossible for the attackers to actually advance, or even get into the capture point. Secondly, the devs put capture points too close together on many maps and have too many segments where there is only one capture point.
Hazard Zone: Amazing with a group of 4 friends, terrible solo with randoms. Dice didn't include voip in a 2021 title which will kill this mode dead. Complete misfire. Also, there needs to be more incentive to play Hazard Zone, and it needs more depth. Its like they wanted to make a Hunt the Showdown but not upset people too much when they die. Like, Fuck DICE, take a risk please! Make death actually matter and stop coddling people. This could be the next big thing if DICE and EA were willing to ignore the casuals for once.
Portal: Fun, though I haven't played it much. Real cool playing BC2 rush in 2021 though.
I am having a blast with 2042 but i have to admit that DICE crashed the landing. This game is not even close to finished, has glaring balance issues, bugs, server problems, map design issues, and a whole host of missing features and QOL stuff.
Issues Off the top of my head:
- Why is there a 1 shot sniper rifle in this game?
- Who though immortal hovercraft was a good idea? (I got 70 kills as a gunner in a hovercraft one match lol)
- The two shot DMR (SVK) is fun to use but not fun to get obliterated by
- It seems all assault rifles have an accuracy bug that makes them terrible compared to other guns? I haven't really been bothered by this but others have mentioned it.
- If you get downed and any part of your body is touching a wall you cannot be revived.
- Sometimes you die and cannot respawn or be revived.
- Distance physics objects and animations can be hella choppy.
- Everything revolving around locking onto air craft with AA feels like shit
- why was leaning removed?
- Why is there no voip?
Things I Love about this game:
- Breakthrough feels epic
- Hazard Zone with a group is fun
- the gunplay, particularly, the sniping, feels really good
Things I like about this game
- The specialists. No lie, I really like them. McKay and Sundance especially are fun as hell and add a new dynamic to a stale formula. Some of the shit I have pulled with McKay on Manifest is now legendary among my friends. Dude is a flank master.
- The guns. I really like the near future aesthetic.
Things I loathe:
- The UI. It sucks, like really bad. I don't understand how a AAA developer allowed this to be released. Its amature shit. The in game map is something you would see in a developers first $4 game on steam. Same for the "Social" screen. Completely embarrassing shit from DICE. If I was a UI Dev I would not put this game on my resume. The UI in "the Cycle: Frontier" is leagues better and that game is barely in beta. I mean fucking jesus guys.
- The servers. Sigh, its not as bad as BF4 but its much worse than 5 and 1.
- The bugs. Game flat out isn't finished.
- The balance issues. Broken guns, hunter killer hovercraft, horribly placed capture points in breakthrough... Why DICE why?
I will never understand why DICE doesn't do closed beta tests with ALL of their maps and modes. Like, if this game got proper testing it would be in a great state. Its obvious nobody played it that wasn't a yes man because otherwise there is no way the game would have launched in this state. Its honestly baffling, these guys are supposed to be professionals.
That said playing this game is the most fun I have had in a video game all year and I cannot wait to go home and play more. Not because it is a game of the year, but just because it is damn fun. Gonna enjoy the broken guns and absolutely slaying noobs on launch day. Will be a slaughter
