Battlefield 2042 | Review Thread

I just played a match of Breakthrough that lasted 50 minutes. It was the most intense, fun and chaotic BF moment I've had with 2042 so far.

It was on the map Hourglass. We were attacking. It was absolutely awesome. Our team kept pushing at the last minute to the next checkpoint and we just kept going. We only lost the match because the last capture point was at the top of the stupid building but it was awesome nonetheless. I healed 5000 of health and revived 50 times.

The feeling of war, the chaos going on all around, 128 players stacked together, explosions and gun sounds everywhere. It was pretty intense and reminded me of the good BF1 chaos. The atmosphere would get even better when sandstorms decided to roll in.

Despite all its flaws I've been having a lot of fun with BF 2042. With enough fixes and additions of missing features I'm confident DICE can make this one of the best in the franchise.

TL;DR: Forget Conquest and just play Breakthrough, much more fun and it actually feels like you are playing in a massive war.

It's pretty rough. Lots of things missing and there is a great deal to be done to make it feel good to play.

The weapon balancing is horrible, plus bloom and recoil(although they may be the biggest culprits).

There's a meme going around that it's "BATTLEFIELD PP29". That gun is either busted or nothing else is tuned. People will faceplant you with it from 100 yards or more and it's an SMG.

It blows every other gun out of the water, although the SVK is pretty good also.

I do think the game has potential, but it clearly needed a lot more time. But that's AAA for you--chuck it out there and let the patches clean it up; it's gonna sell anyway.

To late But I’m used to how bad Battlefield launches are. Wait 6 months if you don’t have patience
People are getting refunds with 40+ hours played through steam and origin still. I think i've seen a couple console peeps get refunds with quite a few hours too.

Oh, and that day 1 patch that was going to save the game?

Update 0.2.1
Fixes, Changes, and Improvements
  • Implemented Server Side upgrades that are targeted at reducing instances of Rubber Banding, often experienced in the later part of a round in All-Out Warfare modes.
  • Significantly reduced instances of stuttering when playing on Breakaway. If the Silo’s are destroyed, it should no longer reduce performance on the server.
  • A note that we are continuing to investigate similar occurrences that have been reported to us on other maps.
  • When looking at allies on your team, their names will now correctly display.
  • Adjusted the animations for Falck during the End of Round sequence to ensure that she is displayed correctly.
  • Updated a skin earnable for Boris via Mastery Progression with a new name: Gator.
  • Ensured that TDM Rounds in Battlefield Portal always start with Random Deploy set as active. We observed that this sometimes wasn’t active when moving from round to round, but have now fixed this.
  • Applied a set of measures that ensure the correct number of AI spawn in Custom Battlefield Portal modes using the Free for All preset.
  • PC Only - Enabled Specialist Selection in Hazard Zone via mouse interaction, removing the need to lock in your selection with the Spacebar.
  • Fixed a rare occurrence in Hazard Zone that would sometimes cause the End of Round flow to not activate correctly, ensuring that the correct amount of bonus XP was awarded.
  • Repaired an issue found in Hazard Zone that could cause players to be shown on the Map when they were not visible, or spotted.
  • Provided a fix for Hazard Zone players who were not seeing their Extraction Streaks updating correctly.

It fixes literally nothing of importance

Nice, thats probably the first mode I'll play for it. We'll give new things a try.

I ranted a fair bit about this anemic changelog last night.

However, there are at some good things in that update. The fixes for rubber banding and stuttering were very much needed.

EXACTLY? You don't want innovation...
Innovation doesn't mean taking away features and executing what is there poorly.

I'm all for new shit (I 100% Deathloop for instance and am one of the few who already put over 50 hours into Bloodhunt) but just because 2042 does some things 'differently' does not mean this automatically excuses other design choices that are lacking.

I agree that Breakthrough is better than Conquest. Much less of people spawning in behind you and crossfire and stuff. There's a real front and you can actually make sense of what's going on.
I like different modes best on different maps. For example Orbital sucks on Breakthrough when you get to the tower. If they would expand the capture area down into the tower more it would be fine.

Been there done that I suffered through all of BF4 on PS4. PS4 was a cluster!! I had fun in the beta. Well 6 minutes to go. At least this actually plays. BF4 a big no.

Downloaded the PS4 version to play with a friend. Will get to see how it performs and how the maps are scaled down.

Just did the tutorial warmup and one game on my PS5. Really liking it so far!! No issues yet. That’s pretty good for day 1!!
A few things to make gun play better. Soldier aim sensitivity from 20 to 35 zoom aim I think was 100 to 110 I might do more and dead zones from 15 to 2. Do both sticks. Under controller tuning
Have fun!

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
The PP29 definitely needs to have its damage toned down, and assault rifles need to have their recoil reduced some. Because that submachine gun is lightning accurate at ranges beyond the AR's, and absolutely annihilate people in the blink of an eye at close range.

The patch did nothing for my rubberbanding or what I call "drag". Never in any first person game of any kind, PC or console, have I experienced what feels like drastic lag and stutter while moving the camera. It happens every thirty or so seconds (when it's at its worst - happens every few minutes in most maps), slowing things down to a crawl for about two or three seconds at a time. I've tried adjusting every setting. I have a top of the line PC with a gigabit connection. Frustrating.

Had plenty of that when BF4 was released on PS4. Perfectly smooth on my PS5 right out of the gate. Was really surprised. Hopefully they get PC figured out soon!!

Yeah, we're looking at Cyberpunk levels of effort to get this into a shape that's acceptable to Battlefield veterans.

I'd never say CP2077 levels lol

Being able to play a match already puts it apart of CP2077, it has issues, I don't know if I'd say 60 plus crashes and the team lying about features issues lol I don't even know if I'd say this is BF4 levels of shape as that was unplayable for some time, as in I could not get in a server and when i started a single player game, it wiped my data and I was just like "well...fuck it" lol I'm ok with what I'm seeing from 2042 all things considered. I do wish they could have had a smoother launch, but I'm happy for the delay, free maps, Portal and the continued communication of what will be addressed, patched, updated etc. So long as I can get in a server and have fun vs 60 crashes, I don't think I'll be too mad, I've been thru worse with this series (we'll see just how worse in a bit lol)

I would ignore most of these reviews. These pre release editions can't be reviewed on Steam for some stupid reason. The game is now out, and is getting slaughtered with mostly negative reviews on Steam. Almost 80,000 current on Steam as of now, do it doesn't seem like EA is suffering because of this.

What a rough game. Frame times and pacing is all over the place despite high fps. Visuals aren't a leap from BF1 and V and performance is still worse. Audio/spatial sound is bad, and it's buggy and glitchy. The comm wheel when holding Q opens only in 3 out 10 tries. I don't mind some visual glitches but functionality must be ensured.

Also, people who don't give a ride suck. In a game like Hell Let Loose this never happened once to me and here people just hop in in drive away and you can run for three minutes.

I also don't know why they go for even bigger maps and more players per server when their tech barely holds 64. BF was always a clusterfuck on 64 player servers and here it doesn't get any better.

It is also 60fps on last gen consoles which is a big win compared to Cyberpunk.

How do you lose so much from one game to the next? They ain't exactly rewriting it from scratch every time. This is insane.

Just saw the game in a big banner on Steam and clicked on it.
It is sitting at a 22% user score.
Meaning it's one of the worst games of the year, in gamer's opinion.

Or maybe, EA will just abandon the game, like they did with so many before.
Anthem wasn't that long ago. For example.

I haven't seen Angry Joe so generally angry at a game in years, he was almost crying. I know its his thing, but you can tell the difference between when he's putting it on, to literally raging so hard his throat gives up and he keeps going anyway because he's that fucking angry.

I haven't bought a battlefield since Hardline because the series direction just lost interest for me, and while portal sounds great, until there's more content and a focus is put onto that (if it ever is) then I think it will be time to hold off on the series yet again until what ever is next.

How is this game woke? Because it has a black female specialist? I am genuinely curious

Did you just assume their gender? It's 2042 dude don't you read the Internet? Their none binary and often identifies as an attack copter depending on if its the 2nd moon of the month, that's why their hitbox is all over the place, due to their gender fluidity, just like their attraction to transient gender queer furkins their strike zones can move about at will.

They actually did start from scratch. This is the first BF since BF4 to offer a completely new menu layout.
Menu is just GUI elements. That's not starting from scratch. They may have cut it all out and decided to completely change it. Scratch would be to wipe out all their old code and build the entire game new. Which would be dumb.

Doubt it. Battlefield is a 20 year old tentpole franchise while Anthem was an experiment that failed to find an audience. They would be mad to sacrifice BF like this.

EA can do one of two things, if pulling another Anthem.
Abandon this one game. And just start work on the next BF.
Basically, cut their loses and move on to the next.

Or, EA an do the EA thing. That is to kill the franchise.
Just remember how many big franchises and Studios, that EA has killed in the last 2 decades.
It's a long list. So seeing another franchise and Studio being killed by EA, is nothing new.

I can think in another solution. Asking full price for this was not a good ideia.
Does this even have a battle pass? If so they should just give that out for free, or like give the amount of currency required to buy it or whatever.

60eu for this package, from what I've seen anyway, is incredibly lacklustre.

IDK, but the game lacks polish and pretty much looks like a GAAS. They just need to admit that and tell people future updates will add new features/fix bugs.

Browsed the negative user reviews on Steam to see what the general consensus is.
While I expected it, I was still a little bit surprised to see how many of them give a positive mention of Portal. EA must've known they had a certified turd on their hands and diverted resources to it in a bid to save 2042 for the long haul. Nostalgia sells and as they previously said, they have no idea what made BC2 good.

Let it stew for a couple'a months like BF4 and it'll probably be fine.

There needs to be a free to play weekend, week like cod is doing..
Honestly, if it's going to have battle pass / microtransactions, just go free-to-play. I don't like the idea of paying 60/70 dollars nowadays for a MP game full of mtx, when there's many games working just fine with f2p models nowadays! That's why I think Microsoft made the right choice making Halo MP free-to-play, and I think Activision and EA should just do the same.

I mean... is it justifiable to pay 60~70 dollars for a game in this state? Hell no!

This game optimisation is bad. I can see 95% of the pc players not even hitting 60 fps even on low.

I get with a 3080 that is completely cpu bottlenecked on a 9900k 70-100 fps with drops into high 60's at times. that's without RT at ultra, i get 85 lows on everything on low.

Dam lol.

Imagine being the cretin that gave this a 10/10 before it came out and is now watching the meltdowns everywhere

I'm sure that EA check felt fine.

In all seriousness, I could see how someone would give the game a 10/10. I could be wrong but those reviewers only got to play the game for a short time. Hell, I would assume myself and many others had more time on our first day than a few of those reviewing combined. Plus didn't they play Portal last? If that's your last impression.. the game seems really good and has so much potential. We all know Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam is coming. This game could still have problems but if Dice released a good trailer showing Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam is coming to Portal for free...buzz will be huge. They throw in 2142 Titan Mode in Portal. Another big boost of interest for the game.

Portal Mode is so much more fun. It really captures the essence of BF better and the maps are waaaay better. So is the gameplay. It's much more on point and with less ridiculous shenanigans.

Not sure how long EA will stay on Steam this time. :messenger_neutral:
First review has 700+ awards and this is only the guys 4th steam review after 32 hrs of game time, thought it was pretty telling:

POSTED: NOVEMBER 19

Launch Review
Do not buy Battlefield 2042

DICE\EA know how to make a “Battlefield” game.
DICE\EA made trailers that promoted this game.
> DICE\EA inserted all the “only in Battlefield” moments in to the Trailer
DICE\EA knew that this game is missing all of the below features.
DICE\EA still released this.

Missing Core Features
> No standard server browser
> Fewer standardized game modes
> Fewer base game maps than any other title. (even including portal the map count is only 13)
> No persistent lobbies. You have to matchmake after EVERY round
> Fewer in-game assignments None outside of cosmetic unlocks
> Less character customization options (than BF5)
> No profile progress/stats page in the menu
> No battle log/stats tracker for other players
> No global leaderboards
> No end of round assignment progress screen
> No custom emblems
> Fewer achievements
> No medals
> No swelling crescendo of dramatic music near the end of a match. Static Noise does not count
> Less destruction
> Only a small handful of destructible buildings on each map
> No map altering levolution
> No spectator mode
> No permanent community servers (would be useful for clans and events)

Missing from Infantry Gameplay
> Fewer guns. Even including all the portal guns, BF4 still had more at launch
> Fewer infantry gadgets
> No manual leaning
> No diving while swimming
> No high wall vaulting
> No crouch sprinting
> No backwards prone
> No explosion knockback
> No rolling after falling from heights
> No ammo or health pickup off teammates
> No scope zeroing
> No thermal optics
> No indirect fire gadgets
> Less anti-tank launchers
> No lock-on launchers. The M5 works with the SOFLAM but that requires 2 people
> No AP mines/claymores
> No static weapon emplacements
> No fortification building
> No resupply stations
> No suppression mechanic. This one I don't mind but it was a staple and now it is gone

Missing from Vehicles
> Fewer vehicle types. Separate vehicle progression per faction even though they are functionally identical.
> No naval vehicles Except I guess the hovercraft technically
> No vehicle gunner direction indicator
> No lock on direction indicator
> No vehicle enter/exit animations
> No tank turret decoupling. This was in BF4
> Less vehicle driver/pilot customization options
> No tank zoom customization options
> No tank gunner customization options
> No helicopter gunner secondary weapons
> No separate helicopter/fixed-wing controls
> No control input while looking behind/free looking in aircraft

Missing from Scoring System
> No squad wipe scoring
> No player damage points
> No vehicle damage points
> No vehicle kill assist points
> No headshot bonus
> No long-range kill bonus
> No assist counts as kill bonus
> No squad objective play bonus
> Oversimplified teamplay scoring (i.e. healing a teammate always gives you +5xp rather than the amount of health you give)
> Squad and Teamwork
> No commander
> No special squad call-in abilities
> No squad field upgrades
> No in-game VOIP
> Fewer factions (with almost nothing to give the 2 factions any distinction)
> No cross-team chat
> No "create new squad" option
> No "promote to squad leader" option
> No clans
> No view of squadmates while in the spawn screen
> No "Medic incoming" indicator in downed state
> No rank names/icons, just a number.

Missing from UI and Quality of Life
> Less control customization options
> Less UI customization options
> No HUD/icon opacity customization
> No HUD scaling customization options
> No gunsight reticle customization options
> No network performance graph
> No individual player scoreboard
> Less detail in the 'who killed you' screen
> No ultrawide monitor support
> Cannot move UI elements to suit screen size
> Very poor friend joining system

BROKEN
> 45 tick rate servers
> Rubberbanding
> Deploy bugs, revive bugs
> Downed state bug that prevents you from respawning if you clip through anything
> Janky animations
> Performance is horrible on PC. Unplayable framerates from what looks like CPU bottlenecking
> Unlock three different silencers for the same weapon that have no effect on the stats of the weapon
> Exact same attachment on two different guns having an opposite effect
> Hovercrafts are able to scale vertical surfaces, as well as fly in the right circumstances.
> In rare cases, a player will become unable to damage enemies. This player will also lose their nameplate, causing them to appear as hostile to allies. This is fixed by dying and respawning.
> Bullet Registration
> Weapon Balance
> Vehicle Balance
