So real talk, you guys enjoying this? Itching to dip but dont' want to drop 70 for shite. My gut tells me the the astoundingly low Steam review aggregate is more groupthink than reality though. Am I wrong?
Picked it up today on PS5 and I'm having a fun time playing 128 player conquest. Started with some breakthrough but that was just a meatgrinder. Not really fun. Overall it's definitely a step back in many ways, but the moment-to-moment gameplay still has that typical Battlefield mayhem. It's just chaos and you can't let stupid deaths get to you or you're gonna have a bad time.
Game looks quite beautiful and so far runs great. Zero online issues either, so that's a plus.
There's quite lot of bullshit for sure though:
- the specialists are shit, no doubt about it
- the weapon choices are pathetic. Every "class" [SMG, assault, etc] has 4 weapons, 3 of which get unlocked through level progression. It's just so bad
- weapons are pretty shit, not gonna lie. The spread is kinds insane, for example
- unlocks are way too slow and meaningless
- FUCK that hovercraft, that thing is crazy OP
- Getting booted back to the menu after every match - why is this a thing?
- some super weird menuing for basic stuff, everything is very counter intuitive
- severe lack of customization
- the music is TERRIBLE
- map rotation seems bad, I keep ending up in the map with the ship wrecks or the one with that huge border in the middle and I've been playing for about 5 hours
- Because the maps are so huge there is a TON of running. Especially at the start of a round and when you don't get a vehicle you have to run all the way to the objective, which by that point is already capped so you have to run even more to the next. The start of every match is just stupid as fuck, takes like 5 minutes for things to get going and players to spread around on this endless map. Just such a bizarre design choice.
Special mention to the situational audio, which is some of the worst I've ever heard in a game. Which is kinda insane considering Battlefield has long been the king of audio. Footsteps more often than not sound from different directions than where someone is, leaving you constantly looking around like an idiot because you hear footsteps but you don't see anyone. Very bad job there.
So overall it's okay, but I severely doubt it has longevity.
