Be honest, how many lf you are fighting a stripped PS5 M.2 SSD slot screw right now?

Guaranteed you used the wrong size screw driver on this, I had a similar issue installing a 2GB drive on my steam deck recently but thankfully realised before I messed up the screw completely.

As someone else said, drill it out with a very small bit.

Ordinarily I would suggest wielding the screw to a piece of metal rod to get the screw out, but how about a drop of super glue instead?

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I'm just curious as to how does that screw get striped like that? Did you use a drill?
To be fair he probably did it when removing the screw and it got worse trying to screw it back in, even with the right screwdriver it's hit or miss because how soft it is.

I’m a fixer where I work. You be surprised how some ppl mess some stuff up or just don’t even care to try. I can see how someone could mess this up and yall expect ppl to be able to build pc’s

I tried that. It doesn't work.🫠
There are bits to remove those. I have one if you're in London and want me to post it.

EDIT: I see you've removed it already. 👌

How do i fix this? I can't unscrew this tiny screw to get my SSD out, so i can transfer it to the PS5 pro.

How much did you tighten the screw when you first installed it?
I remember making sure not to tighten it a lot and did the same with the Pro.

I know this isn’t helpful advice, but I’m not sure how you could get that out. Try using a small plier (hopefully there’s one) and be very careful.

It can be drilled out but I'd recommend asking someone who is pretty handy with a drill gun to do it for you.

Hey OCD bros, I'm here for you and I'm one of you.

You must learn this and I know it is hard.

When screwing in stuff to your computer do not screw it in like you do stuff in a door knob or plywood. Be gentle and barely snug the screw, it will not come out and even if it does it will affect nothing. The smaller the screw the smaller the threads and cheap screws have low hardness anyway. Also, the screw is not holding anything or resisting movement, it will not walk out and even if it does, the M.2 is held in nearly by itself and will likely not pop up and even if it did, as long as the contacts are still inserted, it will still work. Furthermore, the pcb on your m.2 is very thin and it fits between the screw and the standoff, and will crush easily or the washer/spacer fitted into the pcb will also malform if overtightened with a similar result or damaging the end of the m.2 if you overtighten. There is no need to overtighten.

Thank you.

I stripped millions of screws and leaned this long before PS5 came into existance.

Edit: Also be aware of the report from a user on neogaf that there is a small plug that can bend when inserting the modular disc drive if not properly aligned, make sure everything is lined up and installed properly, do not force mating of these objects and be very careful. BABY the hardware you want to last. Baby it.

Remembering back to my launch PS3, I only replaced the HDD in year 3 IIRC and the combination of the soft metal and the hot and cold cycles on the the drive tray meant even with the right tool stripping at least one of four was on the cards. Thankfully I stopped before that, took the system round to my Dad's and he resorted to using a screwdriver set that let him double the comparative length of screw driver I was using, - doubling the leverage - and between him keeping constant pressure of the screwdriver head into the screw head and using the leverage slowly he was able to get them all out without stripping one.

Sadly everything is made cheaper nowadays and even screws fail their functional scenarios in many situations now.

It is not without risk to drill the screw out. To a handy person like myself it would not be a large issue, but to a young mind, there are many ways this could go wrong. I suggest not doing that unless you are willing to lose all hardware involved if things go wrong.

You know what else is super easy? Fixing a joycon's drift(that I hear whined about incessantly, but has been a total non-issue for me due to my repair skills). I can do so with contact cleaner and a tooth pick unless the wear is crazy excessive. However, I won't be suggesting anyone else do that either, because there are....ahem...inexperienced users that will find a way to fuck things up and my solutions need to work for everyone.

Never underestimate the ability of someone to fuck something super simple like that, completely up. Consider abandoning the SSD, I'm just saying, if you don't remember the early 2000s because you were too young, maybe just use the expanded storage already on the new console and consider the stranded SSD an invaluable lesson well purchased.

These projects are the domain of middle aged man.

If the very first thing that jumps to your mind about drilling out the screw inside your PS5 is not about collecting the drill shavings and keeping them out of the console, for example, back away slowly.

If anyone tells you it is simple, ask them to drill out a sample screw in their new pro and post them drilling out the screw in their new console to show how it is done. They won't do it.

This is why I try to tell pcmr's that building a pc is not so super easy for everyone.
just watch the guide from The Verge, its sooper easy

Oh, edit: if you have a small file with an edge and can access the middle of the screw: you can file a small notch into the screwhead, then use a flathead screwdriver (wide enough to cover the whole notch you created) and gently start turning
It does not matter where the notch is, as long as its centered in the middle of the screwhead.

I had to start having people take a practical mechanical test before they get a proper interview. Some of them think they can't do it and end up breezing through. In my experience there is a huge range of natural aptitude people have. I have a friend who has always been willing to do his own repairs but never had a knack for it. Not for lack of trying. He just doesn't have a great feel for things like that.

I've tried pliers. It's screwed in mega tight and doesn't turn one bit.
There is no reason that you should have screwed that screw that tight lol but hope you get it out.
One of the things I hate the most about the PS5.

Couldn't they simplify the insertion of a memory?

I hate having to open and take apart the console.
Huh? This is really simple especially for something you might only do one time.
