Ben Carson says prison proves being gay is a choice.

The homosexuality is a choice argument is one of the most irrelevant things that consistently gets brought up and I'm disappointed when people engage with it. It doesn't matter if it's a choice for all, for some, or biological for all. That's not a reason to say you can't embrace it or abridge their rights.

? It's an out for bigots to think they are in the right, telling another person how to live based on their own religious beliefs. It's not irrelevant.

It is relevant because to a lot of people, as long as it's a "choice," you can "fix" it, or pray it away, or shame people out of it.

If it's an immutable part of someone's biological makeup, you can't do that. And discriminating against them for it is seen as much worse since western societies, particularly America, like to think they're above birth-assigned socioeconomic statuses and caste-like social hierarchies.

Sexual attraction is not more of a choice than color preference, musical taste, food preference, etc.

The whole debate around the notion of choice is dumb, there's nothing to feel guilty about in being gay.

I kind of agree with him though.
I believe that humans are social creatures and will always find away to make an intimate relationship.

I think its alittle incredible to think that we have a gene that defines what type of person you are "CAPABLE" of loving based on whether or not that person has a 5 inch piece of flesh that is hidden from view between someone's legs.

that said I don't think its a choice that you can make and say "OK TODAY IM GAY"

Sexual preference is not more of a choice than colir preference, music preference, food preference, etc.

But I don't think engaging it solves anything since you are are essentially agreeing to the premise which is fundamentally flawed. Maybe someone didn't feel it was biological or at least didn't fit within a particular sexual mold that is acknowledged as biologic, it wouldn't mean such a person doesn't get equal protections to do whatever they felt was most appropriate.

It's exactly like if I were to ask people to prove having religion was biological otherwise send them to atheism camp, maybe you could prove believing in higher powers is a natural thing the human brain likes to do. That's not the point, they have freedom to do as they please because it's not harmful (well, in theory, but clearly it's a more harmful social issue than homosexuality).

Dr. Ben Carson.

Few famous, smart people have disappointed me in my lifetime. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone is human.

None have disappointed me more than Dr. Ben Carson. He's a clown. I'd rather listen to Clarence Thomas pontificate on social ills than Dr. Carson. Once an inspiration for many, now someone many wish would simply go away. It's too bad his professional legacy provides him such an open mic to discuss so many things and issues beyond his realm of expertise...but I guess every reporter loves a train wreck.

I think everyone is misreading this, he actually meant that being gay and therefore going to prison is a choice. Just like how a bank robber chooses to go to prison.

My dad the Tea Partier loves this guy. Which is weird, after all the racist shit he spews otherwise. I guess Carson is one of the "good ones."

Read the title as Bryan Cranston and went "oh no..."

Anyways, Carson just fucking destroyed any chance he had at 2016. The quote is bad enough already, but MAY have been forgotten about if it was just someone randomly asking a question, but the way he tries to explain it for so long just looks detestable.

Implying he had a chance at all? lol?

No he is a smart neurosurgeon. What it proves, is that smart people can be dumb too.

This. And it should be a lesson well-learned for all of you.

Lots of people are really gifted in one area and really deficient in many others. The problem comes in when they think that their expertise in the area they're strong in makes them an authority in everything else, as if all that experience can be extrapolated and applied liberally to the rest of life.

But in fact, we know that's not the case. You wouldn't want Dr. Ben Carson performing your open heart surgery, for example. His expertise is not in a cardiovascular/pulmonary expertise. You wouldn't want Warren Buffett designing your helicopter blades. You wouldn't want Tim Cook developing your 18-month bodybuilding and strength training program. You wouldn't want Michael Jordan preparing you for your first MMA fight. Being good at selling Pizzas doesn't make you a legitimate Presidential candidate. Being excellent on a given field does not offer carry-over into any others. Being good at Call of Duty won't translate to being good at Dota 2. Each requires one to start again from the beginning and work their way into being excellent in a new set of subjects. Otherwise, you risk looking like an idiot like Dr. Carson has. Most people choose the later path rather than the former.

Ben Carson said:
Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight -- and when they come out, they're gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.

Then we should be arguing that that people should be free to live however they 'choose', whether it's their nature or learned.

Smoking marijuana is a choice, yet it's slowly becoming legal. No one is resorting to 'I was born a pot smoker' arguments.

[NOTE: I'm not saying that being gay is a choice, I'm just saying that it shouldn't matter]

Wait, why blame religion and not politics?

Ben Carson proves that you don't have to be intelligent to get through medical school
You would be surprised at how many social derelicts there are. This conservative thing he has is very much expected.

I have to fight off the people who want to watch fox news in the lounge. I'm sure he denies climate change. Or will.

The two aren't intertwined on the right?
I attribute his douche baggery to his political interests. Power corrupts. It will be good biggest down fall.

And he blatantly ignores the power dynamics involved with rape in prisons. As long as we continue to allow rape in prison, we won't have great moral standing to be against rape in the rest of society.

I wonder what's the numbers comparison between rape in prison versus outside of prison.

Who gives a shit? Whether or not homosexuality is a choice is irrelevant. Respect people's personal lives if they are not harming anyone. Especially if they don't even affect your life in even the slightest way. The only times I see this being brought up is when homosexual people have to be excused for being gay, which is pretty insulting. The "born this way" then comes off as an apology for something that doesn't need one. I don't blame gay people for doing it, when society applies pressure to do it, but I don't think we should be dignifying this angle as much as we do.

I do agree with this. And I wish more people would point this out when it comes up. The best response is who cares whether it is a choice or not cause being gay is not a bad thing and they don't need an excuse of they can't help it to "justify" it.

So what if someone chooses to be homosexual anyway. Carson is implying that it's deviant behavior by arguing the choice angle, and he's wrong anyway.

Yeah, I've never loved the "it's not a choice/born that way" argument. I'm sure it's generally true, and I certainly get why it's resorted to, from a tactical standpoint – but you're implicitly granting that it's acceptable to persecute people for their (harmless, private) choices.

Even if it is a choice (it isn't), does this change anything?

But that logic is utterly sublime. He seems like the perfect example of someone who focused all their mental attention on one thing, at the expense of the rest of his education.

And you're blatanly ignoring why ben carson is a mouth piece for the right. The GOP and the religious right have been up each other's ass form a while.

No, another reason to keep em locked up. They'll be happier in there with all those sweaty working out all the time men anyway.

Cruel and unusual Ben. Cruel and unusual.

This is why religion is detrimental to society. If you go read his wiki, you realize this dude is smart as fuck. Hes a medical genius. Yet, because of his belief in religion, his brain disengages when faced with questions that would throw a wrench into his faith. Its like a switch was flipped and all of his intelligence just took a back seat.

Such a good description. It also applies to all those doctors, engineers, and architects that are violent jihadis.

A common misconception. You must kiss, sustain eye contact for at least 5 seconds (but no more than 10) and one party must have a mustache.

What happens if you keep eye contact for more than 10 seconds? You become so gay that you're straight again?

Your point on religion really hits the nail on the head for me. It can often make otherwise intelligent people say and do stupid things.
