New York (AP) -- Bernie Madoff, the financier who pleaded guilty to orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, has died in a federal prison, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently from natural causes, the person said. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.

Last year, Madoff's lawyers filed court papers to try to get the 82-year-old released from prison in the COVID-19 pandemic, saying he had suffered from end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions. The request was denied

Madoff admitted swindling thousands of clients out of billions of dollars in investments over decades.

A court-appointed trustee has recovered more than $13 billion of an estimated $17.5 billion that investors put into Madoff’s business. At the time of his arrest, fake account statements were telling clients they had holdings worth $60 billion.

I guess following the science doesn't matter for prisoners or illegal migrants.

"The judge, upon rejecting the request, said that Madoff had never fully accepted responsibility for his crimes. Madoff’s lawyer said his client’s last hope was for Trump to commute his sentence." -Snopes

"The attorney added, “Our only hope now is that President Trump will show mercy to Madoff by granting a sentence commutation. We implore the president to personally consider Madoff’s rapidly declining health. President Trump, through his leadership on the First Step Act, has demonstrated his commitment to mercy and redemption.” - From the same link below

Oh damn, I guess even Trump thought this dude was that much of a piece of shit to not grant a pardon!

The judge in his ruling U.S. District Court in Manhattan wrote, “When I sentenced Mr. Madoff in 2009, it was fully my intent that he live out the rest of his life in prison. His lawyers asked then for a sentence of 12 to 15 to 20 years, specifically with the hope that Mr. Madoff would live to see “the light of day,′ ”

“I was not persuaded; I did not believe that Mr. Madoff was deserving of that hope. Nothing has happened in the 11 years since to change my thinking.”

“While Mr. Madoff’s present medical situation is most unfortunate, compassionate release is not warranted,” wrote Chin, who like other federal judges in 2018 was granted the power to release federal inmates on health grounds under The First Step Act.

He was sentenced to 150 years. Science has nothing to do with it. The shitbag ruined so many people's lives and didn't give a fuck.

Whatever your thoughts on the long term viability of crypto it isn't a ponzi scheme
Good to know.
As I was under impression that the only point of buying crypto "stuff" was to sell it later, at higher price.
And, for some weird reason, that crypto "stuff" keeps getting more and more expensive.

as if, ya know, more and more people were buying some weird numbers "for some reason".

Oh, but I remember in 2014the Swiss Federal Council examined the concerns that bitcoin might be a pyramid scheme; it concluded that, "Since in the case of bitcoin the typical promises of profits are lacking, it cannot be assumed that bitcoin is a pyramid scheme."
I read it as if the promises of profits exists, but are atypical.

I understand the sentiment, but I suspect you don't really grasp the technical and monetary aspects of crypto.
Please, enlighten me.

You have to remember that the global black market is valued at approximately $10 trillion. The total value of bitcoin is 'only' $600 billion.
There is a lot of speculation, for sure, but it is trying to become the defacto currency of what is effectively the third largest economy in the world.

Real cases, real people. Judge ...

Good the judge was tough on him, I cannot fathom how someone can embezzle that much money and continue to do it and think he'd get away with it and still be unrepentant.

Please, enlighten me.
Yeah, I don't think so. It took me a week of reading and asking questions myself tocomprehend the technology behind bitcoin.
I'd say figure it out at least until you know what 'difficulty' means here, that should get you most of the way there.

tocomprehend the technology
Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.
I don't need clarifications on the technology part, in fact, I suspect I could lecture on it.

There are 6000+ crypto currencies. Exactly which one of them needs to match the black market (now that we've figured we need it for black deeds)?

There is a lot of speculation, for sure, but it is trying to become the defacto currency of what is effectively the third largest economy in the world.
Among other things, bitcoin is absolutely non-viable candidate for a massive payment system, it isn't 1000 times slower, it is perhaps 10000000 times slower than it should be to support it. (number of financial transactions happening daily is insanely high)
It is basically only fit for Ponzi/Bubble use.

Not excusing his actions but some hindsight 2020 - had the investors just kept the ponzi going and not pulled out (it’s not like Bernie was excessively spending the cash he just wasn’t growing it at rates advertised) they may have actually done well in 2008 where it would’ve been great to be in cash- maybe that’s why they were pulling out of it for other investment opportunities. At this point with victim funds/restitution, many of the investors made their money back with no growth. Many of Berne’s clients were incredibly wealthy and some were celebrities. Do you think wealthy people really weren’t going to get their money back? Those types of losses are reserved for the common folk.

Madoff was the fall guy for 2008 collapse. No doubt he was evil on the inside (was supposedly quite generous on the outside), but don’t be fooled - the banks with their subprime mortgages were more evil and were worse than Madoff.
