Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will launch a campaign seeking the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 on Thursday.

Sanders will be the first official challenger for the Democratic nomination to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who launched her campaign earlier this month.

Sanders' decision was first reported byVermont Public Radio, and confirmed by The Huffington Post.

Sanders, who first entered the Senate in 2007, has criticized Clinton for being too soft on Wall Street and has doubted whether Clinton can address income inequality.

Kind of shocked that more liberals don't throw support behind him.

All you people screaming for Elizabeth Warren (even though she's said time after time that she's not running), Sanders is your guy.

But yeah, nothing stops the Clinton machine. Sanders may throw out some ideas that get adopted into the official party platform or Hillary's presidential platform along the way though.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but he's probably not gonna win because he's old white male.

We have come a long way.

I suppose someone had to jump on the train as token competition.

Liberals want to win. Sanders is (while not a fair comparison) the democratic Santorum. zero chance.

Not sure if Bernie is really in it to win it-I think it's more like to ensure that the kinds of changes he's been championing for years get some visibility during the campaign.

He's unfortunately too logical and reasonable to be president in our pure binary system. It's why he was an Independent prior to this, after all.

Big banks and business will back Hilary because she knows how to play ball. A Sanders or Warren won't get that support as they are viewed as too hostile to the status quo.

At best this will nudge Hilary a bit more to the left but it won't matter come inauguration as she knows who butters her bread...

yeah no chance Bernie, sorry. I'd prefer to see the left united behind Hilary. A show of solidarity would be nice, and she's the obvious candidate for that.

From the little I've read of him, he seems like he'd be a great Dem. President, but alas, nothing stops the Clinton train.

I can only guess the plan is to put someone even older into the fray to make Hilary seem young by comparison.

It's not even that. He's one of the few guys in office today that is literally for the people. You know, the reason we have this ascribed authoritative system in the first place. He is feverishly against the status quo of money and corporate interests first, and it seems like an arena most have "bought into" looking at the climate of it all today.

I can't think of anybody else for the people beyond him outside of O.G. Elizabeth Warren, as a current member of the system.

Sanders / Dean 2016

I always found that the media really fucked over Howard Dean royal for his little yearrrh

Sanders is probably the only honest politician out there

Everyone thought Obama was gonna get steamrolled when he first announced.
No they didn't. People were predicting he'd win back in 2006 (and the betting markets this time 8 years ago had him doing better than Rubio and Walker are now in the GOP contest), and he had the establishment support and fundraising prowess from the outset to make him very competitive. Clinton was only ahead of him 15-20 points nationally and she was trailing John Edwards for most of 2007 in Iowa. Now she's 50+ points ahead everywhere. 2016 is nothing like 2008 and Bernie Sanders is not the greatest political phenomenon of this generation.

What is with revisionist history regarding Obama's candidacy?

It was clear after Iowa that Obama was probably going to trounce Hillary. He's not some guy who just came in and stole the nomination from nowhere.

Self-fulfilling prophesy. Whoever we unite behind is the face of solidarity. If we all unite behind Sanders, then he is the face of solidarity.

As long as he stays the fuck out of the election after the primaries and doesn't go independent, taking away votes from Clinton.

I wouldn't mind if he gets the nominee by a miracle, but please don't fuck up putting a democrat in the office.

If he wins, he's the greatest phenomenon. And if liberals vote for him, he wins. See how that works? Our future is not written in stone. We have the power to decide. And if we choose Clinton, we can't blame the fundraising or anything else. We control who we vote for and we are responsible if we don't vote in Sanders.
