I'm not too upset about how the show is shaping up. I wish it had a budget and good studio behind it, yeah, but even visually it has its moments. Not many, but a few. The moments of animation that look truly horrendous are getting fewer in number as the season progresses. Aside from that, it's still Berserk at its core and I'm enjoying it.

Agreed.

I have literally no urge to watch anymore of this show. I may just drop it at this point. Calling it a train wreck would be an insult to actual train wrecks. May just watch the remaining episodes when they are all out but yeah, may be it after this episode.

Episode 07.

Son of a bitch. That was actually better than every other episode combined. No clue if this pace is sustainable and it's graded on a incredibly steep bell curve, but way to go guys.

This series has had some real quality swings. I think this and ep 2 were my favorites so far. The pan up on Guts with the bag pipes really made me lose it, just too good. Still majorly lacking, but man does this have a solid scene every once in a while.

Isidoro's the best part of this series so far. Atrocious animation and textures aside, I'll watch this for the hell of it just cause it's Berserk. Shame that we can't get something less insulting to the subject matter though. Too much standing around by enemies and mobs in this show.

That scene was fucking GREAT. Guts has an amazing theme. Wish I could find a longer version of it, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the OST.

I loved episode 7. The animation keeps getting better with each episode. Most anime have very static backgrounds & lack multiple characters moving at the same time but this show has quite a lot of animations & character movement not just panning over still images & animating one character's mouth flapping. Also the sweeping shots & camera angles are so cool & unique. I know most people who like anime are not fans of the 3d animation but I hope people give it a fair chance because there is nothing quite like it. I'm a big fan.

Side by side comparison of one my favorite frame from the manga and its rendition in the anime :

Ever since the climax of the eclipse, I've been waiting for an anime adaptation of Guts
getting rapist revenge by cleaving a monsters dick into the air while Susumu music blasts in the background
. So dark, so cathartic.

Also I love me some horses sliced in half. The one thing the show has consistently done has made nine foot tall Guts physically menacing when he walks into a scene with normal people.

Latest episode was top notch pretty much every episode after this should be badass given the story arc they're adapting. Given their budget constraints im glad they made the decision to skip ahead and do this arc as its very important to Berserk's story.

Okay, against my better judgement I decided to watch this episode given what you guys were saying.

Best episode by far. It actually felt right for once, especially the ending sequence.

Yup. Great episode. I will keep watching this, even with all of the bad episodes. There just isn't anything better than watching Guts cut things in half. So good.

Farnese was left with some heavy PTSD from the Old Manor.

I think CGIrapehorse gave all of us PTSD.

How far do we think this series will go, then? Is it feasible we'll get the
Guts x Zodd rematch
at the end? Wishful thinking most likely if there's only 12 episodes :c.

I just got back from the movies and they actually played a full ad for this before the film. Was surprised by that though it came from Crunchyroll. Poor bastards being introduced to Berserk in this manner.

I've started to notice something in several episodes. There's just an handful of refuges in there. I suppose they are all familiar to each other as they resemble each other a lot. But there's a great hidden character in all of them. The green hat/red cape refuge (and what I suppose to be his fashion brothers). He is the audience. The game is, where's the red cape?
(most of this stuff was taken sequential)

ICyj9Uc.jpg

Just look at him. You can't miss him. Stylish red cape. Green hat. He first appears as he can't take the beating and looks bewildered. Front row. I'll call him 1.

LbkbKi2.jpg

His brothers also appear. The hat is indistinguishable. The other one has the beautiful cape. They are a bit more sheltered within the crowd. The 2 and 3.

JU85Wwd.jpg

The front row guy (1) is clearly disgusted.

msAKYdi.jpg

This is where it gets tricky. You can't miss that cape. But they are very far.Is one of them new? I'm not sure. The right one is the 3.

kmS0yrO.jpg

Very similar shot but this time he has no one in front of him. Probably shoved the person so he can see better. Who is this dude? I'm starting to get disoriented.

MrM3Voa.jpg

Boom. His brother right next to him. Maybe they are the 2 and 3. Maybe not.

xqhL9QP.jpg

The camera cuts to the other side and there's another. This one is clearly the 4.

BCK13mw.jpg

whrfdJ5.jpg

Yeah, they are probably 4. Why are they here? I don't know. They jump a lot

jWz9lcF.jpg

This is right after the last one. Behind Guts. Clearly the 5. What a family.

7zLNLxF.jpg

And one of them is a crazy heretic. Fucker.

cPhTZRL.jpg

And a hunchback

ixwdSZH.jpg

The great red cape family

I dare anyone to go back and watch the other episodes. He (they) popups a lot. You can't ever miss him (them). Legend.

Something seemed different about the CGI this episode, it didn't make my eyes bleed and some of the action was actually good
The cell shading has improved pretty much after episode three. In particular Guts modeling and shading looks a lot better since episode 1. Also the use of crosshatching looks more subtle in latter episodes.

I kind of blank out the animation because it great finally see post golden age being shown in motion (well stop motion) for once.

I think the series might deliver on the rest of this arc especially the fights

Why does Guts look more confused than angry in most shots. It seems like he is wondering what he's even doing there in most scenes.

The guys nitpicking in here are trying too hard, we get it, it didn't make a great first impression and it isn't exactly what everyone pictured for the continuation of Berserk.

Finally watched this over the past day after blowing through the movies again with my fiancee yesterday. I'm a huge fan of the movies and don't really get any of the complaints (a couple bad CGI moments == a couple of bad stills), have not touched the manga with the exception of reading the first chapter or two years ago, so this is my first experience outside of the 'Golden Age Arc' section.

I don't really care that the show looks awful in some parts (the mansion being the prime example), its visually 'good enough' for me although I really wish 4C could have just made more movies. The last episode (7) was pretty solid but in general what's really getting me is pacing (which is probably a problem of the production) and well, the story/writing/plot (???). I'm not sure if the show is massively butchering it there as well or if this is just a hold-over from an area of Berserk I've never experienced. It feels like a little.. generic, I guess? Nothing to really separate it from other bloody action manga/anime if you didn't have any context on the characters. I'm watching it to see the continuation of Casca and Guts' story but it isn't particularly interesting in its own right.

So I guess I'm looking for manga readers to tell me: are they butchering this arc's story and writing or am I just not enjoying it?

Butchering requires they know where to cut. This is just taking a chainsaw to it while wearing a blind fold and seeing what's left afterwards.

They have cut entire arcs and totally rearranged certain events and even added others. Its a mess.

Reading through the comments here , I think ill just watch the movies and read the rest instead.

1st movie seems really good so far, far better than the first 5 episodes of the new anime.

Based Griffith.

If you gonna read the manga you'll have to read from the beginning, the movies are heavily cut (more than the '97 anime which already as stuff left out), it's basically a quick summary.

It's not nitpicking when everything about it is bad, every single issue that was first witnessed in episode one is still there.

Music is still atrocious, sound design is still atrocious, it still looks incredibly ugly, it still has a terrible frame-rate, it's still cut by someone who never cut before, it's still has inexistent direction, its pacing is still completely off, framing is still completely abysmal, voice acting is still hit & miss...

Is this really nitpicking? Come on now

The original show was made by fans of Berserk, the movies were made by butchers, this show is made by hacks.
The original show is really not animated that well with very limited animation even though I still love it. It features basic panning over stills & the scenes that actually do have animation there's not actually that much going on. The only reason I would have not thought it was greatly animated is because I re-watched it recently. I thought it was the most awesome thing ever when I first watched it in 1999-2000 but it was nostalgia that made me think the animation was actually that great. It really did not age well and the animation is not close to the best animated shows from that time.

I believe many people (including myself) would love a motion comic but I'm also a fan of the new anime which Kentaro Miura (not a hack & scripted episode 3) is heavily involved with the script, and the film trilogy. I hope they continue the new anime but I'm afraid they won't because of it not being popular & basically all the animated projects have been historically financial failures.

I don't think anyone is calling Miura a hack here, I don't think I've ever heard that leveled in his direction. However doesn't mean he can write and manage a show and even then we have no clue how much involvement he has with the show. The Musou game coming out could very well be terrible as well and he's working on that too.

He doesn't write nor manage it, that's for sure.

There are rumors of him stepping in but I think that's all they are and even if he did, not everyone is Wes Craven and goes from writing to directing/writing a movie/show. In fact that almost never ever happens.
