This garbage product does not make the other one retroactively better. That shit is atrocious. Bad looking tv shows, that's almost normal. Movies that look that bad? That's quite a feat.

Parts of the movies look bad - basically every part that's full 3D -, I agree, but the 2D art and animation, while different from the 90s anime's, look really good. Certainly movie quality.

Not the best example, but does this really look "atrocious" to you?

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
The movies are nowhere near as bad as the current anime series but the biggest offender was the fact they chopped up the story so bad and basically removed most of the serious character building moments.

The movies had some good parts, I would argue the eclipse movie was great overall but there were enough bad cgi to leave a bad impression from the first two.

The CGI in the movies wasn't the main problem. It gets better as it goes on and the third movie has some pretty cool looking CGI scenes. Plus the movies have plenty of hand drawn stuff that looks great.

The main problem is the terrible pacing. I definitely wouldn't want to experience the Berserk story with the movies first.

I only saw clips from the third movie but what I saw from it looked pretty fucking cool to be honest

Probably selective clips. The 3rd looks better than the others but lots of things look terrible in motion and the cgi is ugly as sin.

That's a gif of a moment. It's a 3 second shot. Check the one I posted in the Berserk OT of the 97 series a few weeks ago. I prefer it to that gif you posted yet that doesn't make it a well animated show.

Maybe you'd agree with this gifset, but--

Prime sakuga found all throughout the movies:

What mental overrides all the amazing shots:

Good on Studio 4'C for trying. The experiment worked wonders for the armor and the eclipse, and arguably OKAY for the extras in long shots.

But good gawd, the film would be five times as good if they redid those all-cg medium shots.

I like the artstyle of 97 better, but Griffith's face in the movies is pretty good too, in its own way. It strays further from the manga to be sure, especially the nose, but it's still gorgeous. Look at that gif of him above raising his sword. He's terrifying (in a good way). The white hawk indeed.

Whatever you think of the artstyle in the movie, it's clear that it's the result of a stylistic choice rather than a lack of competence.

Here's a colored pic from the manga for reference too.

Mostly because I remember people complaining about Casca being whitewashed in the movies when in reality, she was just darker in the old anime.

Oh I thought they were separate, damn that's one hell of an omission. That's like saying we'll adapt the Saiyan saga without actually adapting the Nappa fights.

Lost Children for the most part IS a separate arc, the ending of it is a lead in to Conviction. In the anime they just kinda say that Guts is tired and weak from fighting before he gets captured where as in the manga you know why he's weak(he just got through a brutal fight in Lost Children).

Also Lost Children shows some scenes of the Holy See hunting Guts trail while in the anime they just show up.

I don't deny some stuff looks good but there's a whole lot of bad. Any 2-3 minute section is enough to find atrocious motion or cgi. Bad models, expressionless faces, terrible mix between 2d and 3d at low framerates. It's kinda unacceptable for a motion picture.

The structure is very simple. The Conviction Arc starts with the Lost Children chapter. The anime is adapting the Binding Chain and Birth Festival chapters

I found a fairly concise yet insightful youtube video that echoes a lot of my own thoughts about the series.

Berserk 2016 - What the HELL Happened

Some minor topics hit upon include:

- Who the series director is, and how it reveals why he was likely chosen and why the shots are as... "unorthodox" as they are
- The egregious storyboarding, both during action scenes as well as unnecessary camera movement during quiet moments
- "The first thing 2D Japanese animators do when they use 3D, is immediately forget everything they know about 2D."
- Some great examples, such as an example of a shot that is legitimately good composition, immediately cut away to a boring shot that gives no additional visual information
- Wish it were better, but more Berserk is still good Berserk

I'm already giddy thinking about tomorrow's episode. The quality has been jumping all over the place, so they'll either pull it together, or the snowball of turmoil will continue rolling downhill. It'll be watchable either way!

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
You guys are breaking my heart. To read so many horrible things about this show after waiting and begging for a sequel for 10+ years is gut wrenching. I'm not going to even bother watching, and after the bad impressions, I'm sure many others won't as well.

You're forgetting the part where they actually visit the town and the forest and see all the dead children/bodies [the demons/apostles reverted back to their former selves after death] that Guts left in his wake.

It shows that the world has noticed the Blackswordsman unleashing terror whereever he goes, and why they were called to stop him.
It gives them a valid reason to believe Guts is evil and we as a viewer can understand their cause, even though they are ignorant to what's really going on.

The anime said fuck all that.
We aint got time for dat.

Maybe the director took some inspiration from Dark Souls halfway thru production, and decided to git gud.

uh yeah I filed that under "hunting Guts trail"

I'm just hoping the Berserk Musou is competent at this point. I'm not expecting the world of it but just hoping its fun.

Holy shit that price. $222 US for 12 episodes? Damn. lol well I think I just need to go to bed. HA HA!

The second Blu-ray Disc box will ship on December 21 with episodes #7-12 and bonus items that have not yet been revealed. Both sets are priced at 22,500 yen (about about US$222),

Doesn't this mean each individual set Blu-ray box? Meaning it's actually $444 USD for all 12 episodes? Either way, the price is absolutely ludicrous

Disc prices in Japan developed into something higher than much of the rest of the world due to, as I understand it, a historical oddity: originally they were set high because they were being sold primarily to video rental stores, but individuals bought at those prices as well so they stuck. Anime in particular sells to a small niche, and the niche of people willing to buy anime BDs is actually rapidly falling at the moment, in conjunction with the general societal shift away from physical media to digital streaming/downloading.

This video is awesome. First time I've seen all elements of this show analysed in one place.

Surprised he didn't mention the headache-inducing extremely low framerate in many scenes, which is made all the more absurd by the fact that it's CG. That combined with the camera being placed in a random location two inches from the subject is my biggest complaint about the action scenes.

Except for the limited animation part that remains an unfortunate stylistic choice.

Yeah, talking head shots work well in anime because they'll have a really well drawn or interesting layout. When it's just Guts completely 3/4ths to the camera with a default neutral expression on his face, there's not even the most razor thin veneer of immersion.

Just wanted to post this gif to remind what 3D anime can do, with enough time and talent.

This is from Studio Khara's "Cassette Girl" animated short, completely 3D.

Or the CGI Gantz movie coming out soon. They can most certainly do good CGI films and shows in Japan.

Ah CGI horse returns.

The true mvp.

Sound design as a close second. That just grgryjrmukclangs through your heads.

It wasn't new levels of bad like the previous episode, but it's still not... great.

I really liked Hill Climb Girl as well, although there were some framerate hiccups

I want to believe the show is finally finding a sense of energy to expedite the tension and add more of a sense of mystique and dread to the otherworldly aspects---especially to play off of the gags here and there.

I don't know...maybe this apparently 2nd half or so of the season now can find some legs? It would help if they finally just re-did the OP to remedy the "fix" eventually employed for Casca even if it still makes no sense that even manifested as an element to detract in the first place amongst all the others.

I really liked that too, and I think it's closer to what you'd get with a sustainable budget like what techniques Bubuki is using.

I'm grateful this Young Animator program exists, because it's a way to make some really amazing shorts, but tangentially to try out all these different pipelines without having to worry about it's viability or logistics as a series.

Episode 7 wasn't too bad. Isidro and Puck had some great 2D animated lighthearted stuff.

They nailed that iconic manga panel, though. I was afraid they'd leave it out.

Jesus christ the camera in this show has ADHD.
Thank god Isidro and Puck are funny. Ain't no party like a goat man snake dick party woot woot.
