Best anime villain

Would you suggest watching the anime first before reading the manga?

I would. Won't say too much because of spoilers, but there is one thing that is revealed way to early in the manga, in my opinion. In the anime, it's happening later and will have much more impact on you.

The Groke from The Moomins has traumatized more kids forever than the rest of the thread combined.

Lovely choice, but she's not a villain. Read the books man!

I wasn't sure about Femto for a while.

Berserk spoilers
A significant portion of the Golden Age arc is setting up for Griffith to be physically and emotionally broken so the God Hand can goad him into agreeing to the sacrifice. Deliberately letting all of his soldiers die is a little out of character, but since he has the whole "my dream is everything" mantra, it still makes sense. The whole rape thing though, was so thoroughly heinous and served no purpose other than to spite Guts. Griffith has always been practical and unemotional, so doing something so petty, "I'm going to do this because fuck you Guts or something" is too much. So I wasn't sure what the author was trying to say. Griffith isn't "simply" a megalomaniac, he's a petty asshole? I don't know. The rape scene is gross and I feel like it ruins Griffith's ambiguity.

It's been a while so correct me if im wrong, but didnt he rape Casca so she would have his demon baby which was used to reincarnate himself with its body

at last, for christ's sake
Can't believe I forgot about Raoh.

Raoh is definitely a villain you can sympathize with. He's got his agenda which is not inherently evil, he just wants to be the greatest dictator in the world

his twin brother Kaiouh
on the other hand is just completely rotten; sure, all Kenshiro baddies always end up redeeming themselves when they're about to die, and he's no exception, but he committed so many horrible atrocities Raoh pales in comparison. Heck, he even traveled to Shura just to tell him to tone it down!

I haven't seen a shounen villain as pure as Frieza. His evil comes from pure racism and that racism ultimately is fueled by fear.

He literally commits genocide. And the fucker keeps coming back.

The editor from Shirobako.

In a show with a bunch of easy to hate characters, this fucker takes the cake.
This. Just...fucking this. Mainly because I used to work for a Japanese game company and had to somehow maintain deadlines with a whimsical shitbag like this just flopping around and moving goal posts. This guy legally murders workers through overwork in Japan and no one ever thinks twice about the trail of carnage he's left behind.
How I didn't murder my boss who was like this is one of my greatest mysteries...This character reminds me of that boss so much if I see this character on screen I start breaking things(good thing I have a lot of pencils and chopsticks...)
Taro Takanashi is on his way to causing similar levels of carnage. The 3D vs Hand Drawn debacle shows he's got the incompetence it takes.

I would say Eboshi or other similar "villains" from Studio Ghibli. I understand villains that want to have power, take over the world, etc. but they're generally very simple.
This is one big reason I really got into anime. Hence I love all the following:
It's Yohan Liebert from Monster.
All of Big Fire from Giant Robo. All of them.
Light Yagami

This series has some of the greatest characters, ever.

Friend/Tomodachi, 20th Century Boys.
Urasawa Naoki is a brilliant creator. Monster certainly took it up a notch after this series.

From Mirai Nikki:
Gasai Yuno
I never expected that manga to end the way it did. Still love that series.

Pretty much, then he grows a damn conscience. Not really "villain" material. Alot of the characters suggested are more anti-hero than villain.
Him growing a conscience meant instead of killing and eating everyone he would put humanity in a zoo and use what was necessary as cattle. And that was after he fought Netero.

I wouldn't say "best" in any matter. But this little piece of shit,
Louis El Bridget from Freezing was such a horrible...thing that I dropped the entire series after his arc. Just looking at his goddamn face literally makes my stomach churn. Why? Well...
  1. After moving into his family, Louis beats and tortures stepsister and female lead Satellizer El Bridget.
  2. He later moves on to molestation, getting only a slap on the wrist when caught doing it.
  3. In a later story arc centered around him, he does all the above to Sattelizer. Multiplied by 100. He also rapes other girls in his spare time.
  4. At the climax, he gets pushed off of a cliff into the water. Inexplicably, Satellizer rescues him after all the torture, rape and brainwashing he put her through and puts him in the hospital.
  5. Only THEN do we get a flashback of his stupid sob story in an attempt to make him more sympathetic.
  6. He finally leaves the hospital, completely forgiven, unpunished.
There are Love-To-Hate villains, and then there are villains so heinous and rage-inducing that you want to strangle the writer. Even Joffrey was more sympathetic than this shitlord.

Braiking Boss from the original series is very intimidating and powerful. Forced a lot of people to retreat and even Casshern had a hard time dealing with him.

I'm glad to see another fan of Casshern here, specifically the original 1970 series & the 1990's OVA.

Johan from Monster as others have said. He is arguable one of the greatest villains of any anime, tv series, or movie.

If you aren't familiar with him, or the anime, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnPftkezETQ

I don't understand how this guy is considered to be one of the best villains. Speaking personally, he never did leave an impression on me when I had watched Monster.

Hmm... I never really considered Oberstein a villain.

He tainted the child. It's still Guts and Casca boy. I dont think he did that because he foresaw the need. He did it because he wanted to. Like the Idea tells him before "Do as you will".

Just recently started reading Berserk and just finished the Eclipse part so I'm definitely going with this guy, holy shit.

Previously I would have went with Dio or Johan but they ain't even on this guy's level.

yeah he's something far and beyond anyone else, the level he's on is titanic.

Kirei's already a bastard in Fate/Zero, but his actions in F/SN... yeesh. Pure alright.

I feel that Zouken was a bigger bastard.

Throwing Sakura in the pit was just disgusting.

Dr. Abdullah, Johan,Femto,Wrath are one of the best for me. Can't really think of any other villains.

I think there is an understated difference between villains and bad guys. Not all bad guys are necessarily villains themselves if all they're doing is acting as henchmen for the characters actually engaging in villainy. At least, I don't think they are particularly good ones.

Lots of good ones here: Hamdo (seriously, screw that guy), Johan, Griffith, Light (who I may actually have despised more than any other fictional character ever), Kyubei, Gasai Yuno, Shogo Makishima, Squealer...

I'd like to contribute one I don't think has been mentioned:

bokurano_7.jpg

This asshole. Koemushi (dung beetle!) from "Bokurano".

Granted, the manga version of him ends up being somewhat different and slightly more redeemable, but...man, what a total jackass. He was doing the whole Kyubei thing "before it was cool".

Johan.

Aizen had a lot of potential before he revealed his disappointingly dull end-goal. Whoever made the series dropped the ball hard there imo. I thought he was interesting and charismatic before he became a
butterfly monster that only wanted the Hogyoku to become more powerful. I had been hoping for ages that he'd drop truth bombs on Ichigo (preferably after an Ichigo beatdown) relating to the Soul King, because while watching the series I thought it was pretty clear that Soul Society was corrupt as fuck and everything outside of it was basically slums. My theory was that Aizen was just kinda insane but ultimately had good motives - to use the King's Key to enter the King's Realm in an attempt to save Soul Society.

But no. He was just power-hungry.

Other favourites include Frieza and Cell from DBZ and Light from Death Note.

Sensui

That's it out of the few animes I watch.

General Blue is a PPB.

Oh shit yeah. Taopaipai is badass and awesome!

Though Sensui is great I still think Young Toguro is more based. Thanks for reminding me of him!

I dunno why though, but Younger Toguro reminds me of someone...

Always wanted to watch Casshern. Is Casshern Sins any good? Is it a remake or something?

The series completely discards the continuity presented in the original Casshan anime series, in which Casshern was a cybernetic superhero battling the evil robotic forces of Braiking Boss, & instead presents him as a cyborg subordinate of Braiking that was ordered to assassinate the savior of mankind and has thus doomed the Earth to ruin.

As far as production values go, it is visually pleasing, but I otherwise didn't much care for it being grim-dark for the sake of it. You will fare much better with either the original 70's series (despite how primitive it looks) or the 1990's OVA 'Casshern: Robot Hunter'. Also, there was a sweet Gatchaman OVA produced at the same time, which I also recommend watching for the action set pieces.

Griffith is up there. The best thing is that his story had a very satisfying conclusi-oh...

Already mentioned, but King Hamdo is another great villain. Some baddies are guys you "love to hate" or even if they're evil, they have a cool factor about them. King Hamdo is not one of those characters. There is nothing neat or inspiring about him. He is the worst kind of person. You would not wear him on a t-shirt.

I haven't seen a shounen villain as pure as Frieza. His evil comes from pure racism and that racism ultimately is fueled by fear.

He literally commits genocide. And the fucker keeps coming back.
Guy finds out about Saiyans growing significantly stronger after a near death situation and quickly wiped them out for being potential threat despite their loyalty to him.

Tao is great! Piccolo Daimao was a fantastic villain, too.

I just finished watching the Berserk anime show due to all the comments about Berserk having the best villain.

What in the motherfuck did I just watch.

This really took a turn.
