No one is worse than this guy from "Berserk". Don't really want to mention his name just so you can experience what leads up to the "Eclipse"

CbpzyPQ.jpg

The absolute pinnacle. I would even go so far and say he is one of the greatest villains in fiction ever. The pure definition of evil to me.

Honorable mentions:

- Johann (Monster): It's hard to create a good villain in a fictional setting; personally, I think it's even harder to create a good villain in a realistic setting. Johann is the mastermind behind all events in Monster and truly terrifying. He doesn't have a body armor or horns or shit, it's just a slim, pale young man with blonde hair and a pleasant smile - and yet he manages to make you skip a heartbeat once he shows up. I recommend watching Monster, it was so good that I was forced to create my first (and so far only) LTTP thread.

- Shaiapouf (HxH): Pitou is disgusting and does some fucked up shit, but Pouf to me is much worse; dares to manipulate everybody around him to make them play along and contribute to his goal of an ant kingdom. Dude is the biggest hardliner amongst the ants and does a bunch of evil shit; dude even manages
to get Pitou killed because of his fuckery
. Others might be stronger, but Pouf mastered the art of playing mindgames and is fueled by his own insanity.

- Dio (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure): Dude is the definition of a scumbag and doesn't hesitate when it comes to harming the Jojo family in any way. But he is also likeable in some ways, which is something that I don't find in many villains.

- Don Flamingo (One Piece): One Piece is currently at the Dressrosa Arc which is about Flamingo and man.. there are a lot of scumbags in One Piece, yet Oda manages to give them a human side or make them likeable to some degrees. Flamingo though is pure, unfiltered human trash and probably the worst being the Strawhats ever encountered. It's hard to describe him without giving away a lot of his backstory, but he is by far one of the best written shounen antagonists to me, at least for a series with the scale of One Piece. The funny thing is that he isn't an exactly new character and you saw him here and there, but I never knew what he truly was.

There's more to being a great villain than being evil, Birdman fans.

What Light did to Ray Penber and his fiance is straight villainous shit.

Femto is an incredibly complex character in addition to being evil as shit. Every single facet of being a great villain he's checked off and written a book about.

Light is great, but there isn't a single mention in this thread that top's Berserk's antagonist. I'd struggle to find a villain in any medium that does.

Yep another vote for Femto. The stuff he does is pure evil that no other villain comes close to... usually i cheer for the villains but what he does is so vile nothing can prevent you hating him.

Obito easily.
His childhood is so sad.

Crushed. Events manipulated by Madara cause him to see his friend kill the only person with any meaning to him. He was still a child and manipulated by Madaras will. Which I suppose is ironic as Madara himself was manipulated.

Anyway without Obito.
Kakashi wouldn't have a Sharingan
No Kurama attack that killed Narutos parents so he wouldn't be Jinchuriki.
Uchiha clan slaughter was aided by Obito.
AKATSUKI
All of the events in Naruto that are awesome are because of him.

Even OPs suggestion was manipulated by Obito and even
killed his sensei.

NO NO NO NO Not this goddamn cockroach.

He was good when he still had his mask but then became dreadful.

No villain that
gets Talk no Jutsued by Naruto deserves the "best" moniker.
+ He's the man behind the biggest asspull in Naruto.

I immediately thought of Squealer when I saw this topic. He's not badass, he's not good looking (hell, he's a
human genetically modified to look like a naked mole rat
), he never gets into a one-on-one fight. He's a manipulative bastard, and the way he's written really drives home the true nature of the villages.

Let's have some naked mole rat in the middle of all this bishounen:

He's
not a villain but a true hero !
The defender of the weak against Nazi wizards

I can't really think of a lot of villains whom I look back to with a very fond eye. Picks like Dio or Griffith leave me completely puzzled but if I had to pick one, it would probably be the above mentioned Squealer - who is maybe the one villain with understandable motivations, or Kotomine Kirei from Fate/Zero. I don't know how he will fare in F/SN but I love his voice and his mannerisms, he had a pretty good arc and that monologue and laugh in the last episode of the show seal it for me.

Here's one more since nobody called him out:

Kazutaka Hyoudou from Kaiji
There is literally nothing you could like in this guy at all.

Shogo Makishima (Psycho-Pass)
tumblr_n14xzr5wOd1qc0wemo1_r1_1280.gif

He's so bad, he made me stop watching the show.
That guy has so much script power, it's hard to take him seriously at all.

so fucking good.
Episode 11 still haunts me

I'm not even talking about his power.

I'm going to copy paste something I had put in another forum. This is from like 6 episodes and I imagine it gets worst as it goes along
He's a genius engineer + surgeon with underground facilities that can become invisible, control his hue and make people's hue clear just by talking to them. He has a communication network he can run alone, that does not use any traceable communication architecture and yet can stay in touch with plenty of people anonymously.

He's also a hacker, plastic surgeon, pharmaceutical expert and the world's best brainwasher.
He RIPPED A GIRL'S EYE OUT, KEEPS IT AS A SOUVENIR AND A DAY LATER SHE LOVES HIM AND WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HIM.

He's also a weapons engineer, robotic expert, programmer, server administrator and game maker now too.

uhh, did you watch season 2 instead of season 1? you have the wrong villain you are describing

There's a theme to this post.

Gasai Yuno from Mirai Nikki. The most infamous yandere of all time, and the benchmark against which all of her kind are measured. Almost single-handedly transformed a poorly written survival game story into something with substantially more success than it otherwise deserved.

ZuGVWkh.gif

Tokisaki Kurumi from Date A Live. A sociopathic, mass-murdering, quasi-immortal time goddess of the highest order, with an unmatched psychotic sensuousness and a voice capable of melting any person or other solid object. Despite her explicit personality, her underlying motives and role in the plot make her the most intriguing character in the franchise. Her ‘weapon’, Zaphkiel, also provides her with my favourite fictional fighting style / ensemble of powers. I just wish she was less of an uncompromising jerk to
'herself'
.

"I want to beat them. Even though I'm not cool, or strong, or just, or beautiful, or cute, or pretty, I want to beat the cool, strong, just, beautiful, cute, and pretty people. Even though I wasn't blessed with talent, even though I'm stupid and have a bad personality, have bad grades, am misguided and am a good for nothing, I want to beat the talented, smart, likeable, overachieving people. I want to beat those with friends when I can't have friends. I want to beat the people who work hard when I can't work hard. I want to beat the the victorious people when I can't win. I want to beat the happy people when I'm miserable. Even if I'm hated, even if I'm despised, even if I'm useless, I want to prove that I'm better than the main characters!"
Kumagawa Misogi from Medaka Box. A born loser without equal, and one of the most unique characters I've come across in anime/manga, even among his unconventional schoolmates. Justifiably steamrollered everyone in the 2nd & 3rd popularity polls with 300%+ of the runner-up's votes, proving that he is, in fact, capable of winning.

Sounds like you found it pretentious and couldn't stand it. If this is what you got from 6 episodes in then you weren't paying attention.

Are the people saying Meruem honestly forgetting that all he does is
play board games, kill a few of his subordinates, catch feels for a blind girl, and then get slapped around by Netero for a few hours before dying
? His subordinates do everything for him.

I mean yeah, he's powerful and pretty smart, but he's not necessarily evil or effective. Cell accomplished more, he at least killed Goku and Trunks.

Pretty much, then he grows a damn conscience. Not really "villain" material. Alot of the characters suggested are more anti-hero than villain.

I recall Meruem doing a lot more in the manga then he did in the anime, although I might be remembering incorrectly. I could have sworn that he had already started directly killing people

This is more a complaint against the show than against him but they pretty much spoil everything that is about to happen in the first episode. So it took out most of the surprise out of the eclipse and throughout the show's entire run I was all "Just get to it".

His whole rise to power and fame was predicated on him meeting only grade Z, bona fide morons on the field of battle. And subsequently, the way he won those victories was just lame.

He's a dull character to watch.

I know I will catch flak for this but the reason for his fall is stupid as hell. He wasted decades of careful planning, years of patiently waiting all because Guts bested him in the duel. I know this supposed to the moment of his weakness and of him trying to regain dominance or whatever but I'm really not buying it.

In his short carrier as a villain he's more of a pawn being ordered around than someone with agency.

And his demon design sucks. Yep I went there.

Oh that's the season 1 guy?
Ok, then I agree and take back what I said.

My spoiler text was about season 2 guy.
Not sure how I confused them... a quick google check shows that they don't look anything alike =/

I haven't given a crap about anime in a long time, but I've watched a good bit of it. If you are remotely into anime or even if you're lapsed like me, you should go back and watch "Now and Then, Here and There".

When the main antagonist, King Hamdo, is introduced her murders a cat with his bare hands and beats a child with it. There a multiple moments like that in that show. It's one of the most astonishingly depressing things I've ever watched. Two thumbs up!

Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

He kills and eats several humans too (including children).

It_Was_Me__Dio!.jpg

Dio, from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He's a complete douchebag with no redeeming qualities (apart from his fabulousness) - he's pretty much pure evil but he's extremely entertaining nonetheless. His Stand,
The World
, is my favourite Stand in the whole series too (well, technically
Star Platinum: The World is the same stand I guess so it's a toss up between the two
). The ability to
stop time is just too damn cool, as is the way he uses this power
.
Only correct answer

He takes over a dictatorship in some country and kills like the king and his royal guards. But even then, I don't think that makes him a particularly great villain. I mean Meruem hasn't don't anything nearly as "villainous" as Neferpitou. I'd argue she should have been the main villain, she encapsulated the word in all aspects. She couldn't be redeemed, she didn't fall in love with humans, she gave no fucks about the lives of others. She reveled in the pain and suffering of others and went out her way to seek it. I mean what she did to Gon alone made Meruem look like a damn hero.

Also omg @ Chrome correcting the HxH character names. Google da gawd!

Someone mentioned Enel from One Piece.

Enel was horrible. Such a cookie cutter, evil "just cause" villain. Especially relative to the greatest that proceeds and follows, Skypeia was pretty shit.

Johann is probably the most objectively best one, imo.

Tyki Mikk from D.Gray-man

Millennium Earl, also from D.Gray-man

Hell, I'd include the entire Noah family from D.Gray-man. Not only were they well-designed, they were all sadistic fucks. Tyki and Earl are just the MVPs.

Creed Diskenth from Black Cat

Keigo Atobe from Prince of Tennis
AKA who knew a tennis player could be such a bag of dicks

Suigintou from Rozen Maiden
haha! a non-shonen entry!

Also, honorable mentions for great designs even though they were second or third rung villains: the Sound Four, Sasori, Deidara (Naruto); Shou Tucker (FMA); Shizuru Fujino, Nagi (My-HiME); Sensui, Toguro Brothers(YuYu Hakusho); the Royal Guards, Hisoka, Illumi(Hunter x Hunter).
