"But first you have to DIE"

He kills and eats several humans too (including children).

But he takes no joy in it, unlike many of his predecessors, and he's only interested in them as a source of sustenance or as potential army converts.

He personally only kills less than a dozen people, whereas even Colt has killed hundreds (by capturing/sacrificing them to be Queen meatballs) by the time he was even born.

He quickly develops a sense of morality, mercy, and fair play, and
these virtues cost him his life in his only real fight.

As pointed out from Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) -
Squealer

Afterwards I'd go with Griffith, although speaking only of the original TV adaptation, we get to see only little of it. I do really like his characterization though and this comment from Snacks gives a nice explanation for his motivations during the eclipse.

Unfortunately the manga isn't finished and might as well never be, so I'm cautious of calling this guy one of the best villains if the entire story isn't told yet.

Is Akio the best villain or merely the sexiest?

(Only watched anime)
This is more a complaint against the show than against him but they pretty much spoil everything that is about to happen in the first episode. So it took out most of the surprise out of the eclipse and throughout the show's entire run I was all "Just get to it".

His whole rise to power and fame was predicated on him meeting only grade Z, bona fide morons on the field of battle. And subsequently, the way he won those victories was just lame.

He's a dull character to watch.

I know I will catch flak for this but the reason for his fall is stupid as hell. He wasted decades of careful planning, years of patiently waiting all because Guts bested him in the duel. I know this supposed to the moment of his weakness and of him trying to regain dominance or whatever but I'm really not buying it.

In his short carrier as a villain he's more of a pawn being ordered around than someone with agency.

And his demon design sucks. Yep I went there.

You should run :)

About the structure , its a little different in the manga. It's a one adventure and then a bigger storyline where Femto also intervenes . The flashback starts with Guts being born out of a dead woman. It's more about him and how did he became the man we now know. It's not about Griffith and his ascension.

About his rise to power , whom are you thinking specifically (moron) ? Adon ? Because his role is much smaller in the manga. He forms a group with a bunch of thieves , slowly rising as a simple mercenary group and ends up being part of the Royal Midland Army putting end to an 100 year war between them and Tudor. Hardly a small accomplishment. He reshapes the entire Midland court , scheming against the ones who try to confront him. He goes to great lengths to put the band in position to conquer that statute.

As for the dull , i disagree immensely. He's extremely complex and not an evil person , he's simply engulfed in the pursuit of his dream. He's able to suppress his own emotions in favor of his dream. But he actually shows guilt in his actions. He asks his most dear comrade if he thinks he is a bad person. Casca knows fully well he who he is behind the stoic figure he represents.

Guts is the only thing he ever come face to face that makes him rethink about his dream. He is the only one who shatters Griffith's own reality. When he defeats him , he breaks that one reality. The dream is over. The defeat is imminent. For the first time he felt inferior.

Now , there's another thing that obviously escapes anime watchers only , because its not mentioned outside of the title card in the beginning. Berserk world is bound by the laws of Causality. Every action has a reaction. His entire life was orchestrated for him to accept the sacrifice. His imminent victory followed by his crushing defeat is something which he cannot escape. Nor the consequences of that. Everyone is a pawn in the world of Berserk.

These fuckers are the worst, fuck them fuck them.

I started reading TG about 4 weeks ago; Read all of TG and am caught up on TG:Re. Maybe I read it too fast and can't keep up with all the characters, but the clowns haven't seemed too bad so far. Obviously they started out bad before the main story but to say they are the worst? Why do you say that?

Well technically I have a indifferent relationship towards them.
I like them in how they are calm and chill and that nothing really affects them. Though there comes a time where I dislike them and think they are the worst. The fact they laugh at people's tragedies especially at Kaneki's pisses me off. Plus you have Itori who was fucking with Kaneki and manipulating him. And then there's Roma who loves seeing people suffer especially Kaneki. The recent Re chapter emphasized how sadistic and disgusting Roma is, I mean she literally shredded an investigator while drinking his blood.

They may not be the worst at times but goddamn are they one of the best manipulative Villains.

The Groke from The Moomins has traumatized more kids forever than the rest of the thread combined.
Excellent choice, although IIRC she didn't turn out as villainous(?)

Ophelia (Claymore) and Shira (Blade of the Immortal) are also great choices for not so well-known villains.

Ash from Pokémon.

He enslaves world destroying creatures to do his bidding so everyone goes out of their way to be nice to him otherwise they know he can just disintegrate them and leave no trace.

You don't fuck with Ash Ketchum.

"Hehe...HAHAHAHAHAHA! What's the matter!? Ain't you gonna do anything, candy ass!! Me? Scared of this wuss? Don't make me laugh! You want to know why I keep taunting him? Because I can't wait for the match. I want to kill him right now! Whenever I get a match lined up I get excited, I tense up, I feel ready to beat someone to death and I can't get any sleep! That's why I pick up all those women! Besides, it's not like some puny Japanese is gonna beat me, no matter what he tries! You want to beat me, huh!? Then give me all your women! I'll give you my genes! I'll spread my seed across this country! And in 20 years you'll be crawling with world champions, sounds great right!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

Watching that puts a huge smile on my face. Such a badass, what a beast.

Link has spoilers to the fight.

Light Yagami... He's just so perfect as a villain. He becomes so twisted and ruthless that it's too enjoyable to watch
his fall
at the end of the series(fyi the manga ending is better and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about).

Nui Harime(Kill la Kill). A really fun villain to watch as she has such an odd presence on screen. Right from the start you can tell there is much more to her than meets the eye. It's revealed later that
she is some kind of crazy alien fiber/human hybrid created in a lab
.

Frieza is possibly my favorite anime villain ever, though. He's just such a perfect villain. He takes absolute pleasure in being a complete dick, destroying planets and ending entire civilizations just because he is the strongest known presence in the universe for a good while. The battle on Namek was the coolest fight in the show because the stakes felt so high. Goku was away from Earth and any possible help in the form of allies or senzu beans and he was trapped on a planet facing down what was essentially an alien demi-god at the time. Who else could have brought Goku to the brink like that and caused him to go SSJ for the first time? It was the most satisfying fight and victory in the entire show. It felt so good to see Frieza fail. I also quite liked the design of Mecha Frieza when he comes to Earth a bit later.

Boy do I love me a
well intentioned, but misguided
villain. He has so much intrigue as soon as you learn about him.

Show: Gurren Lagann
Character: Lordgenome

Seems like I really need to read Berserk.

Also seems like we need better actually villains in manga/anime thinking about it while there are certainly several characters I could name very few end up actually being a real villain and most are just anti-heroes(Lelouch, Light) or characters that are misguided and end up going to the good side in the end(Vegeta). Also many of the villains I've seen mentioned in this thread generally have very boring reasons for doing what they try to do or are made out to be sympathetic instead of just actually being ruthless and evil.

That said, villains do come in many forms I just more of these forms were actually explored in more animes.

That said, couple of personal favorites...

Johan from Monster (really should rewatch this some time)

Azula in Avatar - Maybe not Japanese animation(animated by a Korean studio but produced in the US) but its as anime as anime can generally be. Seriously though, for a kids show Azula was one of the best portrayed villains I've ever seen in pretty much anything, she was strong, ruthless, sadistic, and portrayed the 'villain' of the series much better then the actual villain of the series (her father) but wasn't ever so over the top that she became unlikeable as a character, and while I think her arc could have ended better I think they did what they could with what they had (again, kids show).

Someone mentioned Enel from One Piece.

Enel was horrible. Such a cookie cutter, evil "just cause" villain. Especially relative to the greatest that proceeds and follows, Skypeia was pretty shit.

Evil for Evil's sake can be a lot of fun, it's why Dio is so charming. But not doing it right can give a lame villain.

Griffith man, Christ. Can't think of anyone more despicable.

I liked Enel because he looked like Eminem.

No one is worse than this guy from "Berserk". Don't really want to mention his name just so you can experience what leads up to the "Eclipse"

CbpzyPQ.jpg

Dammit. I see this guy being quoted over and over. Haven't read or watched this series, but if I start, will it take long for me to reach this guy? My interest has been piqued.

It took way to long for this dude to show up.

Also gonna go with Berzerk guy.

Someone mentioned Enel from One Piece.

Enel had a god complex. He was an insanely powerful atheist on an island where the king was referred to as "God." The entire arc could be viewed as basically Oda talking about what "God" really means, but I'm not going to get into that.

Basically, he wanted to "ascend." He was more powerful than God, so he became God, and then tried to leave. He wasn't evil, so much as he was selfish and uber-powerful and the power went to his head. I can understand the love for him. Plus Skypeia was a fun arc. It was literally just Treasure Island but in the sky.
Tyki Mikk from D.Gray-man

Millennium Earl, also from D.Gray-man

Hell, I'd include the entire Noah family from D.Gray-man. Not only were they well-designed, they were all sadistic fucks. Tyki and Earl are just the MVPs.

Tyki Mikk is so awesome. I really miss D Grey-Man. We did not even have a closure and the manga did not finish yet :(

You both have excellent taste. The Noahs are awesome. Best part about DGM. It'd be nice if FUNimation could at least get the rest of the existing series dubbed and distributed. I have no idea why that fell through.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
The opening post has me a bit worried lol

Every other villain loses to this guy.

Well I'd argue he isn't much of a villain per se.

anyway

Yazan is just hilarious. He is very aggressive but at the same time hilarious.

Cooler is superior to Freeza in every way and I feel like his role is so undermined being just a movie villain

Pretty hilarious, they're actually quite proficient when not facing Yatterman, and are very memorable with their 70's humor

Braiking Boss from the original series is very intimidating and powerful. Forced a lot of people to retreat and even Casshern had a hard time dealing with him.

drknthmon.png

DarkKnightmon is a suave villain who manipulates A LOT of people, has a really cool voice, and has an amazing theme song.

kurata.jpg

Kurata meanwhile is a racist who commits genocide and has absolutely no redeeming value on him, and that makes him so good to hate.

Would you say he was... Cooler?

I can't really agree with that Cooler is basically Freeza if you stripped him of his personality made him more serious all the time and took away his faux gentlemen personality, and then you end up with any villain ever.

His fifth form was pretty cool I admit before he got jobbed 5 seconds later.

Besides Freeza did it......

Show is only 25 episodes long, so not really. Though, be ready to want to read the manga as soon as it's done.

Just recently started reading Berserk and just finished the Eclipse part so I'm definitely going with this guy, holy shit.

Previously I would have went with Dio or Johan but they ain't even on this guy's level.

Berserk spoilers:
I can't even begin to imagine how it was to read Berserk when there weren't a lot of volumes available. The anxiety before the Eclipse must've been too damn high.

Would you suggest watching the anime first before reading the manga?
Read the manga. It's perfect.

Yeah read the manga, it's pretty fantastic. Miura's art is just ridiculous. Then go watch the anime/movies if you want to. I think I read through the Golden Age Arc, then watched the movies, then went right back to the manga.
