Best/Favorite Rocky movie (Protip: Is Rocky IV)

The first one is obviously the best movie. It is not even a fair comparison. However, I would call Rocky III my favorite one, just because of Clubber Lang and the final match.

Is it cheesy? Hell, yes! But do I eat it up? Every time.

Did Clubber have any redeeming qualities?

Every other Rocky opponent (even Drago) has at least one moment of clarity and or humility. Clubber was just a cock the entire time, right? Been ages since I watched Rocky III.

Clubber was hungry. Represented Rocky's drive from his younger years. No more, no less. Angry, and hungry. Worked well in the context of the story, plus Rocky NEEDED to be beat.

Rocky 1 - Best in the series as an actual movie
Rocky 2 - Probably second best, similar to Rocky 1 in story, except Rocky wins
Rocky 3 - Abruptly went from sad moment when Rocky lost and Mick died, to buddy-buddy training film
Rocky 4 - Entire movie is a motivational music video with little plot as an actual movie, but a favorite because of the motivational and cheesy stuff
Rocky 5 - Trainwreck, how or why this was made is beyond me - a Rocky movie without a boxing fight, really? He's almost a passive character to his son and Tommy Gunn after the last movie being completely opposite and training and building one fight, now there's nothing
Rocky 6 - Great finish to the series, had no business being this good, probably tied for second best in series

Rocky is a street fighter, so even if Tommy Gunn was as a better boxer than Rocky, Rocky's life circumstances made him very tough to put down.

He was never going to be legally/medically cleared for a real match.

That is what made Clubber my favorite of the opponents. You just hated him, pure and simple. No redeeming qualities at all except he was a badass. That is what made his fall at the end so much more awesome.

"I live alone, I train alone, I win the title alone!" Also a good character for representing willpower.

1 and 2 are like one long movie. Epic.

3 is godly, and maybe its my favorite. I still cry when Mickey dies, and I have seen it 30 million time.

4 is pretty awesome. I love the driving montage.........so good.

5 is a great disappointment. I have seen bits and pieces of a directors cut that made the movie totally different. Event eh music was different.

6 made me cry so many times. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to my childhood.

For me it was Rocky 4. It actually had a bit o fresh storytelling with the aged fighter who pushes it just a little too far. Then the insane revenge training is just awesome.

Worst line though, "What about sparring rock?"
"I don't think I need it anymore."

Ha ok.

Rocky I is a legitimately great movie.... especially because he loses at the end. The characters were more complex and interesting.

Rocky was a truly fantastic movie. I had watched all of them as a kid, with the exception of the first (which seemed to never be on HBO for some reason, despite there being a Rocky movie on HBO every day when I was growing up).

So I got the DVD of Rocky 1 a few years ago and seriously gained a ton of respect for Sylvester Stallone.

It's just like Rambo. Rocky and Rambo don't really have much to do with the style of their sequels. Gotta say though the Rocky series is probably my favorite right after the original Star Wars trilogy.

Best Tier
Rocky I - Legendary, just a great film.
Rocky IV - Probably one of the most entertaining 80s movies ever, even if it's basically one long montage.
Rocky Balboa - A fitting return to the tone of the first two movies, very moving. You can tell Stallone wanted to properly send off the character in a respectable way.

Great Tier
Rocky II - A worthy follow-up, in the mold of the first one, but not quite as good.
Rocky III - When the series started to become a cartoon, but still enjoyable.

Didn't Even Exist Tier
Rocky V - Dogshit.

"No I don't hate Balboa. But I pity the fool."

It's just like Rambo. Rocky and Rambo don't really have much to do with the style of their sequels.

It's funny how everyone associates Rambo with the red bandana-wearing, shirtless, gun toting, one-liner killing machine of the second movie. When infact, Rambo did none of these things in the first film. He was treated like a victim of his own circumstances (went to war and became a prisoner, came back home and was still treated like a prisoner). Only one person ever died in the first film, and Rambo didn't kill him with his shirt off.

Also, what's interesting, the original ending in First Blood had Rambo turn himself over to the police, then he grabs an officers hand gun and shoots himself in the head. The original ending has Rambo come to the conclusion that he has no place in society at all, and commits suicide. But test audiences didn't understand this apparently and wanted it changed. So the ending was altered to have Rambo turn himself over to the police willingly, and then he goes off to prison.

Interesting how a change like that can turn one movie into an entire series, and how the later series became almost a parody of the first film.

Although technically not as bad as Rocky V, I actually like Rocky II least. Just a quasi-rehash of the first movie except now he wins. I liked the expanded relationship with Mickey, seeing Rocky dealing with financial+work related hardtimes and the the improved ending fight sequence but overall...least enjoyable Rocky movie to me.

Other than that, I'd say Rocky is by far the best with Rocky III in second.

Though when it comes to pure entertainment nothing can beat Rocky IV.

In fact, he didn't even INTEND to kill the man - he threw a rock at the helicopter to prevent it from harassing him, and it pitched, and dumped the sniper out!

The final Rambo movie, while keeping a truly extraordinary amount of gore, managed to bookend the series awfully well. Perfect ending. First Blood is the best, though.

You do realise there was a Rocky VI right?

I adore Rocky films but man, 5 was beyond awful.

It's much like the Alien series to me, Resurrection doesn't exist in my eyes, the same goes for Rocky V

I wonder why Stallone choose to do that. Well I'm sure money is one but he put so much heart and soul in Rocky and Rambo.

Human perfection right here:

As Dolph said once, "My problem is that people get intimidated by someone big and beautiful like me. They hate to think I can be smart as well."

Actually the second movie made at least some attempt to keep him the same human from the first movie and didn't go explosion crazy until the end. Rambo 3 was the one where he just became the cliche killing machine that chucked out one-liners and smarmy retorts to everything said to him.
