Best graphics of any game?

While it isn't out yet, God of War Ascension looks like it could be a contender.

Most games these days have great graphics and honestly I stopped caring about graphics ever since gen started. Most games look good enough to me.

Next major step is to optimize the games for locked frame rates, having a good IQ and killing pop ups. I fucking hate pop ups!! Forgot to mention AI. I still haven't played a single game with decent AI this gen.

I know i know, imgur pics with shitty 1440x900 resolution, but i had to go pick them on some forums where i posted them over a year ago with a PC not as powerful as what i have right now, so sorry if i dont have something better for people who wants to best quality 1080p pictures. I'm sure it would look better with the PC i have now, but i dont have time to play it.

Crysis Warhead modded
Witcher 2
Some parts of Max Payne 3 (PC) were pretty impressive.

Some parts of Metro in DX11 on the PC blow me away. The Witcher 2 looks more consistently great, but Metro has some zomg graphical moments.

If I have to nominate one game through the ages, it has to be Wind Waker. Timeless shit and yet to be matched after all these years.

Sony need to give thatgamecompany the budget and the manpower to make a zelda killer

Slightly OT, but... TGC are only really good at building certain experiences and visuals. Their games lack gameplay almost entirely, and with nothing to complement these experiences you find yourself oddly unstimulated. If they want to build a Zelda killer they'd have to find someone there who can actually design a game.

No love for 2d?

PS:
i'm still waiting for dragon's crown

I'm sure the fact that I illustrate is a big part of it, but styles like this are always the best to me. Of course I really like the feeling of awe that realism can provide on rare occasions as well.

I just remembered Dragon's Crown is coming out in Vita too... man that would be a great cross-buy title. I really want to see it on both the Vita and the big screen. Cannot wait.

Why include games that aren't out? Modded games also are technically better but I feel like the originally developed product should be the one counted. We all know how PC makes almost any game look better.

Most of the ones I can think about are on PC.

Chris Kohler on sleeping dogs:

We’re lucky that Square Enix picked it up, but it really shows its age. Hong Kong doesn’t stand up to close examination. I never marveled at the sights. The city tends to all run together, a mass of nondescript locations and boring geography. Grand Theft Auto IV looked a lot better, four years ago.

Especially not true on console :)

Some random thoughts:

Uncharted 3 (beats 2 in 3D, but otherwise Uncharted 2 looks stunning in places, with better AA preserving the textures better)
Rayman: Origins (and Legends, saw the Wii U version in person, looks even better)
Trine 2 (love it on PS3, but in Full HD in 3D on PC, it's the best graphics I have ever seen in my life so far!)
God of War 3 (love the art)
Super Stardust HD Endless Mode (looks great in 3D and non-3D)

I just started playing the Witcher 2, but so far I'm underwhelmed. It's probably great looking for its genre ...

I haven't played it yet, but that GTA mod looks stunning. Just got a new PC, so I may give it a try.

There's lots of other stuff I really love (from the 16bit era fi Gods, Xenon 2) but I'll stick to current gen. ;)

I don't think The Witcher 2 is that impressive visually speaking. There is still this weird dithering on shadows, I wonder why it has not been fixed by now.

Shocked that I haven't seen Trine 2 mentioned. Every frame of that game impresses.
Take a screenshot at any time and it would make a great wallpaper.

He has a point on world design. From the technical bit of it all, he's way wrong. But I also haven't seen much of any openness in Sleeping Dogs yet. Haven't spoiled myself with videos but at least GTA4 did let you traverse in the air and pushed probably as much geometry around as Sleeping Dogs. Although Sleeping Dogs might win out on close range detail and atmosphere, GTA4 actually is a better looking game from an open world perspective or when rendering vast scenery.

That's my take. SD looks better overall but doesn't do what GTA4 is doing. If that makes sense. I haven't played lots of it yet though.

This thread is about "Most advanced graphics". If it truly was "Best graphics" I'd say Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Starcraft 2.

Starcraft 2? Really? It never really Wow'd me.

The art of the units and the world, the excellent but still tasteful lighting, the sharpness of the textures, it all adds up to something amazing to look at. If you have maxed settings.

And what's more to say about SMG2? It is a technical masterpiece to be able to pull that off on that hardware.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is still the best looking game I've ever seen. The level of artistry in the effects is unparalleled.

The vast majority of The Witcher 2 screenshots that have ever been posted on GAF looks terrible.

That's quite a definite indication the game is not the best looking game of all time.

Shocked that I haven't seen Trine 2 mentioned.

It's purdy in screens, but goddamn the game is a cluttered mess in motion. Also the colours are way too saturated on all layers.
