Best graphics of any game?

SC2 has the clearest graphics I've ever seen. You can literally watch a 240p stream of it and still know what's going on. Try any other RTS and lol.

The art of the units and the world, the excellent but still tasteful lighting, the sharpness of the textures, it all adds up to something amazing to look at. If you have maxed settings.

And what's more to say about SMG2? It is a technical masterpiece to be able to pull that off on that hardware.

Eh, I guess SC2 is a nice looking game, but it just doesn't have that extra Oomph to make it even a contender for me.

SMG2 looks amazing, but I always found its graphics to be a little overrated, the art style is not as amazing as some people make it to be. It's still an beautiful game though, and I'm surprised no one mentioned it before.

downsampling and posting a 50px shot doesnt count :p

we had this thread a while ago i think, and witcher 2 still takes the cake in my book

although other games seem to have closed the distance considerably lately

edit: some evidence to support ma theoryz

I guess I'm not so interested in the very high end-side of good graphics, where the screenshots looks like something on a videocard packaging. I'm more into universally appealing and userfriendly graphics.

This thread just made me realise... I'm sitting on my new PC and I haven't gotten any benchmark games for it. Where's the cheapest for Witcher 2?

Consoles,

Uncharted 2, specifically the Tibetan village, my jaw was collecting carpet fluff..

WipeEout/Fury HD, 60fps, 1080p, stunning.

Rage (360)

PC,

Crysis, specifically the jungle/forests.

Metro 2033

Mirrors Edge (although this is probably due more to it's artistic merits)

The Witcher 2 is still the best looking vanilla game out there. While Crysis 2 and GTA IVcan look stunning, mods make them look so good. The Witcher 2 was stunning in every way on day one and still blows me away.

I think that looks awful, the ground and the rocks in the background have that kind if unreal engine 'vacuum formed moulded look' to them, I really hate that look.

The Witcher 2 Curse:

The inability of NeoGAF users to post screenshots that do the game justice.

Again, it's a poor game if you need special gifts to showcase it lol. A great looking game shouldn't suddenly lose its visual properties even in crappy screenshots.

The things that make that W2 shot look bad: Too many different values in colour and material. It looks like some things are lit by hard sunlight and other places are wrapped in smooth dusk. Then there's the fires that light things like it's the middle of the night and the "wet" look in all rock and vegetation. Everything is way too busy and uneven.

The problem with a question like this is that it's very subjective. For example, I don't particularly care for Witcher 2's art style. Yeah, it's graphically impressive, and does all the little tricks right, but the aesthetics just don't do it for me.

From a technical standpoint, it's probably a contest between the aforementioned Crysis(1/2), BF3, The Witcher 2, Metro, etc. One thing that I think is interesting is that, aesthetically, games usually benefit more from good colors, lighting, and shadows than they do higher polygon counts and higher res textures. I wish developers would actually focus on lighting and shadows more than anything else, because it really adds more to how believable the game looks.

I agree. I know I may get laughed out of this thread for saying so, but I find a game like Guild Wars 2 far more visually pleasing than TW2. I don't really know what it is about The Witcher 2, either. Maybe it just hits Uncanny Valley territory for me. In an attempt to sound profound, I'll just say that the art direction of TW2 fails to really captivate my imagination.

I see what you mean, I feel exactly the same way about games like Uncharted 1/2/3.
I just don't find them impressive artistically at all, and I played all of them.

On the other hand the artstyle of Trine 2 is mind blowing I think.

What does that mean?

Visuals is such a subjective thing. I'll say Journey literally left me with my mouth open on several occasions. It's the only polygonal game that defeated the boundaries of its limitations, as far as I can see. It's like seeing concept art come to life. Rayman Origins is also drop-dead gorgeous.

p.s. Crysis 2 looks better than Crysis 1.

I know i know, imgur pics with shitty 1440x900 resolution, but i had to go pick them on some forums where i posted them over a year ago with a PC not as powerful as what i have right now, so sorry if i dont have something better for people who wants to best quality 1080p pictures. I'm sure it would look better with the PC i have now, but i dont have time to play it.

Jesus Christ that fucking bloom.

It's purdy in screens, but goddamn the game is a cluttered mess in motion. Also the colours are way too saturated on all layers.

I'm loving the game myself. Every new area surprises me with its creativity. I was floored by that dragon I posted which is why I took the screenshot. I love the saturated colors and I don't think it's cluttered at all.

Technically speaking, it's not Journey of course, but it did actually leave me awestruck, unlike anything since Crysis has.

This happens in every graphics thread, though. Graphics to some people is purely technical, whereas for other gamers it involves art design and presentation.

Personally, I really loved the look of FEZ, Journey and Rayman Origins.

I have already posted one of the few screenshots of The Witcher 2 that breaks the curse in this very thread.

I have some more curse-defying pics but I am at work and does not have access to my 3TB screenshot drive.

I can never match the IQ of your screenshots. I feel like as an AMD user, I just don't have access to many tweaking options.

What's worse, is that the game is very linear & all those "magnificent" shots are of non-interactive backdrops that you can't even come close to.
Might as well start posting Halo Reach & it's skyboxes. They blow the shit out of the Witcher 2.

Had the Wii having the same graphical hardware as the PS3 and the 360, I would have absolutely no doubt in my mind their games would blow them out visually and technically. For instance, the best graphical showcase on the Wii is Super Mario Galaxy 2, and it runs.... in 60fps LOCKED. Let that sink in very deeply. I also don't need to remind you how brilliant SS looked when HD is implemented through Dolphin. It's like Monet's painting come to life.

Nope. 60fps alone does not mean a game is technically superior. Even if it were released on ps3 or 360 it would still be competing with the likes of journey , gow3, uncharted 3 etc. Nothing about SMG2 implies it is technically superior. Its a great looking game though.
