The Shining. A Real clip doesn't quite convey the proper experience of seeing it on the big screen, but you'll get the idea.

The Shining. All it showed was the elevator with the blood flooding the hallway, followed by the release date. It didn't give any SPOILARs, but it was such a weird and striking scene that it made people want to see more.

Best teaser trailer? Being a Star Wars fanatic at the time, the teaser trailer for Attack of the Clones (the "Breathing" trailer) made me very antsy to watch the movie.

I don't know of anyplace that has it archived (sadly), but here goes:

There's a bank heist, it's fairly normal looking...but you knew it was Raimi. The robbers go to the roof, jump in their waiting helicopter, and take off. Right after they celebrate another job done, the helicopter stalls...then stops. Quick pan back, and you see a giant web between the twin towers...the helicopter caught like a fly.

Amazing stuff to see. I went to Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within just to see it.

The Shining teaser is pretty cool, but sadly...like most trailers/teasers of the era, it's way too long, and way too redundant. It could have easily been 30 seconds.

That one was great. It looked like some generic heist movie and then out of nowhere its a Spiderman teaser. What they should've done is given a cameo to one of the robbers to totally throw the audience off.

Here's another one of my favorites: David Cronenberg's Videodrome. While there was a regular theatrical trailer made, it pales in comparison to the insanity of this teaser trailer, virtually all of which was created on a Commadore 64. Early 80s atomic meltdown a go-go. Again, watching a small video clip doesn't have quite the same effect as seeing it on the big screen, but it'll do the job. If you're curious about the film, be sure to check out Criterion's new hyper-swank DVD edition.

Alien 3 had a great misleading one. with the egg cracking open over the earth with the tagline "everyone on earth will scream"
