Betrayer announced — hands on with new FPS from the creators of F.E.A.R. and No One..

I hope these guys, if they're reading anything, take the art criticisms to heart and at least plop an optional filter or something that makes the game easier on the eyes.

Because holy fuck it burns to look at.

I hope the devs stick to their guns and don't compromise their vision because of hardcore gamers. If their vision dosen't sell, it doesn't sell. I'm more interested in unique experiences that are the product of artistic intent.

I'd be super bummed if they caved to the miniscule minority.

Very well said. Agree completely.

I hope they decide to bring it to PS4.

I'm willing to call you hardcore if your eyes can take that lol

I don't get it... at all really.

Looks like a headache.

The last taste of anything NOLF related was Contract JACK and that game was terrible.
Have you played Gotham City Impostors? It's by the same people.

I love the setting, but I honestly don't think "black and white and IMPORTANT THINGS ARE RED WOAAAAAAH" is very creative. It also looks busy as fuck thanks to the monochrome.

Fingers crossed, I guess. I'd love for this to work.

Update:

Good

- Loot

- Bows

- Dark Souls style death system where you lose your money/inventory(?) after death, but get a second chance to retrieve it after you die. If you die before you can get to it, it's gone forever.

- Enemies one-shot you (so far, at least)

- Stealth

Bad

- Visuals aren't working. Got a headache after five minutes of play. My TV is properly calibrated and looks great with every other game. It's way too sharp, and the blacks are crushed to hell. The red isn't standing out enough either. I feel the visuals make me not want to explore the world.

- Inverted controls not working even if set in the menu.

- No controller support.

How in the fuddlepuzz did i miss this? I've been waiting to hear from former Monolith employees for a long time now. This is awesome news. Now we've got both Zombie Studios and Blackpowder Games.

Your video convinced me, I gotta check this out. Love the enemies having muskets, so they have to wait a while to reload which must make for a fun whack-a-mole shooting arrows one by one vs gun shot one by one.

Love that wind.

Its definitely a risk/reward with the guns.

They are super powerful and don't have as much drop as arrows, but they are loud and take a long time to reload.

I love the combat and I love the wind.

Played 2 hours straight. Mostly been playing it as a stealth game, arrows exclusively. Longbow is sweet. I've found the South Gate, Hilltop, the Fort, and two clue areas. Bought a Shortbow (Quality). The healing (heart icon) barrels are nice.

Headshots seem to be discouraged as enemies have helmets, and it takes 3 arrows to the head which is the same as 3 body shots to take an enemy down. But I did take an enemy down with 1 shot to the leg as it seemed to be an exposed area. Do enemies with different weapons have different armour pieces so there are some exposed areas?

1 melee attack to the back takes an enemy down, so I guess those count as stealth takedowns.

Killed all the enemies, so I'm aimlessly wandering around literally in circles because there aren't enough landmarks. I have no idea how you get to this dark world?
I put the bell on the Fort but I'm not sure what I'm meant to do with it?

EDIT: nvm figured it out, had to ring the bell to get to dark world.

The enemies can spot you from really far away. Bad Far Cry 1 memories right there! XD

These creepy totems, any idea what they're for or is it unfinished?

Sent a bit of suggestions to their steam page about full body awareness and enemy body points.

I played it for about 90 mins, and while I like all the ideas here the execution is a little...eh. Which is to be expected in most aspects because it is after all an alpha build of the game, but the monochromatic visuals here just don't work in their current execution. Now let me be perfectly clear here: I have nothing against the style at its base, and wholly disagree with people demanding they implement a color mode. I do, however, feel they need to rework them with a wider range of darker and lighter greys in order to make it easier to both differentiate between things and navigate, and alleviate the crushed blacks plaguing the game in its current incarnation.

Also I'd like to see them both get rid of the fast travel system (why should I be afraid the environment and what's in it if I can just warp around it at will?) and get a simpler, more immersive compass (something like featured in CoD2 but with a more era appropriate skin, maybe?).

Umm, so yeah booted the game up again to ring the bell, and now the game is in colour! Clearly a bug :P

Recorded a video of how it looks:

Wait so they actually went through the trouble of having everything textured in the right colors?

Did the devs lose a bet or something that they went with this black and white shit? Grief's video hurt my eyes instantly, my favorite part was the map screen since that offered a brief moment of respite from the eye rape.

I have put about three hours into it, really digging what I have played so far. Haven't had to deal with eye strain, but it's definitely an issue for a lot of people...hopefully the devs will have a solution.

dont like these initial screens. Too contrasty for me. But good to see something different. Though a bit like Madworld, but that was somewhat more comic book style.

Ring the bell again to go to the dark world to deal with the totems.

Yeah. Looks bad. This is not how you do high contrast B&W.

See: Mad World, Unfinished Swan, Limbo etc

This just looks like FPS with a bad case of achromatopsia

Bought it as well. The style looks amazing in my opinion. I just hope it's well playable with a gamepad.

Edit: Well fuck, no gamepad support. Gonna have to find a mouse somewhere.

The people commenting on the artistic integrity of the devs regarding the color scheme; c'mon, it's just a filter thrown over a regularly colored game. If the assets and everything were made with this in mind, or at least were saturated in relation to the filter, it'd be one thing, but when they've simply added a filter over normal colors, the least they could do is add an option to turn it off.

As it is, the contrasts are severely messed up -- I don't think that's about artistic integrity, as it's probably just a result of slapping a filter over a game with regular color balances. At the very least it needs to be grey balanced to filter out the excessive amounts of noise and sharpness.

It's an early alpha, it will probably crop up at some point.

I actually agree, it definitely needs some work.

The other game presented entirely in black and white that i remember, like many others already, was Mad World. Couldn't get into the visuals, luckly the game was so engrossing i kept playing it anyways.

I think they need to make adjustments to the presentation. Maybe Black Powder could have opted to present the game with colors but at night, use a satelite similar to the moon for ambient lighting. In the end, silly sugestions from myself aside, it is really hard to get into the visuals as they are now.

Got a mouse and it's definitely very much a mouse & keyboard game. Need some proper aiming to shoot those damn spaniards from a distance.

Played for half an hour. Absolutely love the visuals. Doesn't feel lazy or forced to me at all and rather like something that was envisioned early in the project. And speaking as a dude who often has headaches and migraines I can't see what the problem is. Maybe turn your monitor's brightness down a bit.

Didn't understand how to deal with stuff if you've entirely run out of arrows. Just die and try again? Is there some sort of timing where you can stab them in the face? Managed to stealth kill a few of them but are you basically fucked when any of them spot you and you don't have ammo?

You can always come up behind the enemies and stealth kill them with the dagger. Enemies will carry arrows. If you have enough money, buy them from Fort Henry.

You are fucked if they spot you and you got no ammo on even the muskets. I carry like 2-3 muskets, so I haven't come across an ammo issue.

Looks like it has some cool stuff going on so far. The weapons all seem interesting. I will probably wait for a full release.

I think it looks awesome. These guys worked on Condemned too, right? I think I'm hyped and I don't even play FPS games that much.

There's a lot of things here that they should tweak, but the core of the game is great. The weapons feel nice, the visual style mostly works, and the creepiness feels like something from Condemned or FEAR.
