BEYOND: Two Souls (Ellen Page, Willem Dafoe) |OT| Press Triangle to Aiden

You know what? I'm really liking this game, maybe more than Heavy Rain.

It can get really fucking stupid in some scenes, but it's the good kind of stupid, almost anime stupid. I've noticed at least 3 RULES OF NATURE moments.

The story is really nothing special, to the point that you don't even care, but if you can connect with the character and are interested in seeing important moments of her life, then the character development becomes the main force behind the narrative, and not the story itself.

I can definitely understand why a lot of people would be disappointed though, specially because of the stupid bullshit that I'm enjoying so much. When I got to
The Condenser
, I was really disappointed because, even though that scene had some fantastic moments, the story started heading in a really really stupid direction, but then the stupidity allowed for so many cool moments that I didn't even care anymore.

Homeless so far is definitely my favorite chapter, and I tend to like
pre-CIA
Jodie more, but at the same time I REALLY liked Navajo.

At first the inconsistency was bothering me a lot, but now most scenes are really good, even if some of them are borderline nonsense and make almost no difference to the plot at all.

What are the possible outcomes for The Dinner scene? I did it 'by the book' or at least I think so, and it still ended with
Jodie crying in the bed and Ryan leaving

I feel tempted to try this scene with just
sitting there, watching TV and doing nothing else until he arrives.

You didn't like
angst
Jodie lol...?
the guitar solo rage had me LMAO
That was hilarious yeah :D Poor Cole. I loled when he turned down the volume.

Did anyone figure out yet what was censored in the EU and the US version of the game? I've noticed in the US version, the two showers scenes that the game had so far had convenient camera positions and towel placement to cover her up, which was not really the case in Heavy Rain if I remember correctly. Is that it?

Completely missed that. Where was it that you could do that?
US version seems uncut. There is no nudity in the EU version either. The shots you find online are from a hacked version using CFW.
Here is the guitar scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EClYp9AkgGc

qd has said time and time again that this is different than heavy rain, and it was so obvious from the get-go that this game's focus is not on making choices.

True. Heavy Rain was structured around making choices and having events unfold based on player choice/error, whereas Beyond is more like a stage play with a certain amount of set outcomes that players can roleplay within. Until the end, when the player can essentially choose the outcome. But it doesn't feel arbitrary, the ending options feel like en extension of how the player acted as Jodie and Aiden and where there ultimate loyalty lies.

I think there's more nuance than people give it credit for. But a lot of it comes down to how the player defines these characters, and how important that is to you. To me it was very important and in the end, mattered a lot.

Heavy Rain felt like a slow paced adventure game, I really liked it except for the foolish ending. I was REALLY looking forward to this game! I was on a media blackout, but man it was a letdown!

This game wasn't slow paced, it felt like Uncharted or Sleeping Dogs (combat wise) with QTE's instead of traditional controls. It absolutely needed traditional controls and not qte's...I didn't like the constant jumps either. Lastly, this game didn't need Ellen Page or Willem Dafoe, they could have easily given the voice acting role to anyone.

I am not a fan of this studio anymore, I am actually very skeptical of their next game. I really doubt Sony will buy these guys or renew their contract when it ends with Singularity PS4.

Playing this game just reminded me how good Psy Ops was.

The Condenser
. That was tense but wasn't as scary as I thought it'd be.

I definitely don't like this guess the movement QTE though. I'd rather they go back to Heavy Rain's QTE. Half of the time I have no idea which direction I should push the right stick towards.

It's a shame strafer's thread was locked.

I was really hoping we'd find out it was actually Salim moaning.
What thread Oo?

1. Have sex with Ryan (you have to skip the bar)
2. Try to have sex, but she cries, because the memories of the bar scene are coming back
3. Refuse him
4. Fuck the date up with Aiden
5. Fuck the date up with Jodie

Oh wow, at the first requirement. Would never even think about it, although they do make a reference to it early in the scene.

Yeah maybe the blackout wasn't such a good idea. It was said from the beginning that it would be quite action heavy. Also Ellen Page made the game for me, so I disagree with you there. Sony will probably renew the contract, because the studio is excellent. You don't have to like every game they make. They are trying something different each time, so it is only natural that you won't like everything they make.

Watch the body movement. It's really all there is to it. You don't really need to guess. If you really can't figure it out play on easy mode, it shows you the direction like HR.

Finally picked up this game over the weekend - I just finished (Early chapter)
The Condenser
and now I've kind of lost all momentum. I really liked the direction I thought the story was heading with
the early experiment, and the party scene and how her ghost partner was kind of a blessing/curse when it got out of control
but now the story seems to be going into some crazy direction which is what killed Indigo Prophecy for me.

Fuck...

Don't worry. Most of it is explained and it's not even close to Indigo Prophecy level of bad. It's actually pretty good. But there will be more sci-fi and supernatural stuff. You should have expected that. Fortunately because of the timeline you will go back and forth. There is no real direction the story is heading in till the last third. So it won't get progressively more stupid or anything. Just be prepared for some weird stuff during a certain desert sequence. Don't be scared, the game explains all of it, even though it gives some crazy Indigo vibes at first.

Oh wow lol

IT WILL ALL MAKE SENSE.

How do you get to do it in the game though? When I was sitting there on the street, I don't think there was a guitar to play.
It's on the left side of the street way past the guy that wants you to blow him. There is a bum with a guitar sitting there.

Yup.

I'm at the Hunted chapter right now and why on earth did they not make the game so we play it in order of events?

Hmmm I dunno. I enjoyed Heavy Rain more.

I hadn't followed the game too closely as I didn't want anything spoiled. BTS got the benefit of the doubt from me because I really enjoyed Heavy Rain.

But when you remove so much choice (and consequence), you also remove the reason for me to be a part of the process.

I winced every time you got one of those moments where the game just completely stops still waiting for you to nudge the stick towards the next white circle. The game actually pauses the world waiting for you to push the stick to advance the story, with no alternatives and no choices. I don't get the point of those at all except to rub me completely the wrong way.

My guess is hand waving. I imagine the story would seem even more silly if it went in order, putting it out of order masks that a bit.

The Condenser chapter really takes a complete nosedive in terms of level of writing and storytelling.

Jodie: "Don't worry, I'm not going to die today"

and

Dead soldier: "Don't go in there - you will die!"

and

Flashback cutscene: *scientist explicitly explains the concept of the wormhole or whatever during the fucking sudden emergency breakthrough between the worlds*

I really want to like this game and there are some nice moments scattered throughout the experience so far, but sometimes you get these little shitballs in your well-presented and technically gorgeous meal.

This is epitomized or perfectly encapsulated in The Party, because the chapter points towards really refreshing game design and choices (like the experimentation and awkardness of being a teenager and making different choices in a social situation), but then it completely fucks over every moment you had with its embarassing "conflict".

What is wrong with that dialogue? The first one makes sense, considering the relationship. The second one is wrong, he said:
"Don't go inside. Nothing but death in there.", which makes sense considering what you find in there
and the third one happens
before the outbreak, not during. He gets interrupted and dies.

Well Heavy Rain had those as well. You had to take Shelby's inhaler out for example, or else he would just stand there gasping for 10 minutes. Maybe Beyond has more of those, I don't really know. But they said pretty clearly how the game was going to be. QD tries different things with each game, so it is only natural you won't like some of them. It's part of their DNA. Maybe next time :)

It will come together in the second half. But they could have done a better job at it for sure.

Played until I
escape the cops after the train scene.

How long does the game last because if I go by chapter names I read it looks like I am already one third in?

PS: I just ask because so far I barely can stop myself from playing. Really like the game.

Well, to elaborate a bit since I am not making my point clear:

1 is an over-used cliché that you often hear in an 80's or 90's action film. Regarding 2, I know my representation of the dialogue wasn't complety correct, but my point still stands - it's just an incredibly cheesy way of establishing a mood of horror to have
a corpse re-animate
for shock effect while providing a forewarning to the audience/player.

Regarding 3, it's not about the before or during
the outbreak
, but the fact that it's too damn convenient to have a very unsubtle scene explicitly giving the player exposition - it's just lazy and illogical storytelling.

1. Well she does say it a bit sheepishly and he is not convinced either. Probably just to bolster herself up a bit.

2. It's cheesy yeah. I don't mind though, because films still do that as well. I don't expect better from a game. Especially not when it is only done once in the entire game, which it is.

3. I don't really think that was meant to be exposition. It doesn't make much sense. It's just some mumbo-jumbo. They had a normal class and then they died. Nothing else. And even if not, there is nothing illogical about it. The mechanic makes sense, the location makes sense, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be there. It's not like it is forced on you either.

You are about 20% in. Some of the later chapters are really long.

It's well planned out. There is nothing wrong with the timeline in chronological order. You always know how she got from one chapter into the next one and if you don't, then that's because a considerable amount of time has passed, which is accurately portrayed by the game. They chose this approach, because of pacing reasons. It would have been tiring to play as child Jodie for 3 hours, same as action adult Jodie for 3 hours.

The Party was complete garbage imo. "Well, that escalated quickly" gained a whole new meaning with that scene.

I've only heard that the US version is censored for nudity, but the only differences that people have *actually* seen are with the EU version being censored in the
Condenser
chapter where you
fight the first scientist controlled by the entity. Specifically it's when you impale him in the neck with the spike that was removed from the EU version.
Otherwise, the two versions are 100% the same from what I've heard.

Absolutely, and I want them to keep trying, and keep experimenting. This one was a huge miss for me, but who knows what they come up with next. I think they've got some interesting ideas that could honestly make for engaging gameplay, not just semi-interactive cut-scenes. Hell I was surprised at how nice it felt to bound from cover to cover for stealth and shooting, for example. And there were moments where I thought conversations could have gone several different ways that could have had interesting implications, but those were very few and far between.

BTS seems like an answer to people who thought the Heavy Rain was too jumbled because of all the various strands of the story he was trying to make dynamic, and some of his choices in 'resolving' some of the conflicts that arise from that kind of system. So this time they've overcompensated by going with a lot more control and linearity. Way too controlling and bounded for my tastes.

I am seriously enjoying this game so far. Unbelievably refreshing and unlike anything I've ever played. I've done and seen things no other game has touched on or explored. Amazing.

Only negative is sometimes you can't do as much as you'd want, but other times the game let's you do exactly what you're thinking. Like for example when your foster dad drops you off to the institute, all me and my cousins were hoping that we could strangle him before he left with Aiden, low and behold, it gave us the option! I started the action, but changed my mind last minute. He turned around and shivered, and then carried on.

But that was a minor point. There's been some amazing moments so far, that are genuinely tense, powerful, intriguing, fun, beautiful etc. The highly negative reviews are baffling.

I liked it. I can at least relate to similar situations of my life and the revenge part was pretty satisfying to me almost on a personal level lol

Started this last night with the girlfriend playing as Jodie and me on my phone playing as Aiden. The co op in this game is brilliant, and is perfect for couples where one might not be a gamer per se. We got up until the
Homeless
chapter, but then the game froze when
Tuesday was giving birth
:(. When I turned the console off I looked at the save data and noticed the last time it saved was an hour prior, so it looks like we'll have to play that entire chapter again.

Loving how the story is sliced up into vignettes of Jodie's life. My girlfriend liked it too, she kept commenting how cool and interesting it was. Also, while I know it's a criticism that it's very hard to "fail" in this game, I kinda of appreciate it because my gf can play through it pretty effortlessly without getting frustrated.

The graphics are incredible and the performances are as well, though I have to say, Naughty Dog pretty much set an unreachable standard in mocap/VO/performances with TLOU.

One more thing.

Why. is. this. game. so. DARK. Brought my backlight settings up on the TV and the blacks are still crushed as hell. Maybe I have to fiddle with some other settings. Why no brightness/gamma settings QD?

Can't wait to get back to it tonight.
Ok, so I had HUGE issues with brightness in TLOU and then beyond TS. What you do to fix that is you go to display settings and change some setting from Full->Limited, fixes the problem completely.

And the game gets even better from your current point onwards culminating in one of my favourite endings to a game in recent memory. BTW maybe you should spoiler tag the part about the dad ;)

Yeah, what was cool was I how I totally did
want revenge without even thinking about the decision.

The music for the
revenge
was awesome too!

I'm a bit bummed I can't get the platinum trophy, just because I don't have two controllers nor a valid touch device :(

Other than that, really liked the story. Got to the end the first time in less than a day but I'm replaying a lot to get everything (but the duo mode and platinum trophies of course...)

So, just beat the game. All in all, I actually liked this a bit more than Heavy Rain. I just liked the story + the characters much much more. It's not perfect. The flow of the story is problematic because it's told out of order. I personally got used to this about a couple hours in. But it's a pretty jarring experience at times. I also feel like, some of the ending parts of the plot kind of felt underdeveloped. I guess to an extent, it depends on the ending you choose. But yeah.

I wonder if this works as well as Heavy Rain. Like I said, I think the story and the characters are infinitely better. But I feel like Heavy Rain's mystery/detective aspect, made the game a bit more hands on. Or at least, gave off the illusion that you were doing more. Whereas this game felt a lot more passive. I happened to love the story for the most part, so it was something that didn't bug me.

I'll have to think about it some more that's for sure. I can honestly say I had a really good experience with this though.

Apparently it's a disc streaming issue ala. GTAV. The game is just not built to be installed and run off an HD. Consider than unconfirmed though, don't think I've seen a legit source on that.

Seriously these graphics....I just....I'm blown away. At it's best, nothing touches it. There's been several moments where the visuals have just looked plain photorealistic. Only other games graphically that have managed to pull that off for me are GT5 and pCARS at certain moments, maybe the F1 2013/14 in rare moments too. So it's bizarre seeing it from an action/adventure type game.

I literally cannot fathom what they are going to accomplish on the PS4. I have no doubt they'll hit photo realism a la The Sorcerer Demo.

Side note, still haven't stopped playing. Just addicted. Love that every new segment is fresh, new, exciting and different. Amazing locales and variety.

Just beat it. Damn, what a experience. I put off playing GTA to beat this and that says a lot to me since I was really interested in GTA before this came out. The performance by Ellen/Willem was perfect. Well done Quantic, well fucking done.

He may not have had much time in checking out the full retail copy. It's likely they're pretty busy over at ND with the DLC for The Last of Us that's due in December/January, plus whatever is being worked on for the PS4.

Has he ever spoken about other QD games in the past? I'd like to see his thoughts on Heavy Rain.

Obviously you can't compare this directly to film (given the length and how it's broken up). But, I really loved the story. And it made me think how much I would enjoy a film with this story (same actors, with a film length format).

Yeah I don't get all the critics of Cage's writing. The plot was fantastic (and better than most stuff in big budget movies) with the dialogue being mostly great.
