Biggest fanbase betrayal?

Borys

Looking at that 360 launch list had me thinking:

where's the big shock, the big betrayal we all got used to in the past?

Arguably the greatest fanbase betrayals in the history were:

- HALO from the PC/MAC to Xbox 1. Worldwide decapitation of PC gamers.
- Final Fantasy VII from Nintendo system to Sony's Playstation. Shocker of the year.
- Resident Evil 4 going exclusive
not
to GameCube. Mikami even wagered his own head!

(Did I miss any major franchise jumping to the other camp?)

This time we have:
- Ridge Racer. A Playstation franchise goes 360! Will anybody care?

What the future holds:
- Maybe a GTA betrayal? That would be big.

So, uh, the point of this thread is to name what was the biggest betrayal in history. How did people react? Media? Message Boards? Was there any uproar?

if we aren't just talking about system changes but gamestyle changes, I think it would be hard to argue against this as the SINGLE biggest betrayal of all time.......:

Sonic Adventure.

The last proper sonic game we got was Sonic 3 which I think overall was incredibly well received. To go from that (and its expansion pack) to Sonic Adventure well.... obviously Sega was hoping to make a SMW->Mario 64 transition, and while Sonic Adventure had its highlights, it was anything but....

Nintendo completes heel turn on videogamers, hits them with REMOTROLLER in lieu of trying to go next gen.
Arguably, the REMOTROLLER is an aspect of a truly next-gen system, whereas the other consoles can be called upgraded versions of this gen's systems.

EDIT: I would say that, although not very big in size, the fact that Nintendo let Silicon Knights go instead of trying to accomodate them was pretty jerkassy and possibly shortsighted. I don't know how serious the "creative" differences between them were.

Sadly..... I know I'm going to get stoned for saying this..... Wind Waker. :(

Not really. Your opinion is in the majority, really.

I personally loved the game; but somewhere in the middle of the game I knew that OoT/MM was the better game. Personally, I absolutely adored the cel-shading though. It just that there were fewer dungeons, and I personally felt the story wasn't engrossing as OoT (and especially MM).

Man, you guys are going to shit your pants in rage when Sony includes a tilt sensor in the DS3. In one fell swoop, they'll have negated Nintendo's advantage and kicked MS in the nuts.

Some good choices here people - DX2 and Wind Waker.

I totally forgot about the Spaceworld ----> Celda fiasco :lol

Well I finished the game.... took me forever to find the motivation to.... after a certain point in the game.... the story.... just slugged along and lacked. I think I'm waiting to see what happens with the next Zelda game before I purcahse another Nintendo console just for a "Zelda" game.

Yuck.

That would be awesome. After all, control stick games were established by the N64, but they were driven by the fact that Sony adopted them.

The sooner Sony switches to the 3D controller, the sooner it will become the standard.

Haha.

But really, while I'm really cynical about REMOTROLLER Maximus, you just never know the impact it can have. I hope the controller goes hand and hand with Nintendo's software efforts, and hopefully bring out really awesome games out of it. If it's a bust, there's always PS3/Xbox360 waiting in the limelight.

I just mentioned that in another similar thread a few days ago or I'd have used it again

... fuckers

If you want to see something sad, go visit the official forums, there's an (insane) group of fans trying to make it playable. Thing is, the game is playable, mostly. It's just not any fun whatsoever.

FF7... in a good way.

FFX-2... in a bad way. An insult to most FF fans, myself included. I played FFX for the second time, watched the ending, and was really excited to buy FFX-2. I bought a used copy. When I came home, I played FFX-2 for about an hour and a half and put it up on eBay.

Sega fans jumping ship turning into Sega haters, when Sega has still made te best games the whole gen. The bit they faltered is nothing compared to what they've brought to the table.

I'd rather give up gaming than turn against Sega, too much history.

My main problem with FFX-2 is that it's embarassing to play. Maybe if they could have had a non-homosexual version or something I would have enjoyed it.

Hey I liked U8 :(

U9 was just a broken game though, even after the fan work it was still bleh

edit:

it's ironic that of the big 3 pc rpg series, only Wizardry 8 was a really kickass game, and yet it sold like crap and the company went out of business. MM9 and U9 were both ugh.

I wish more of the japanese Wizardry games came over, I like them quite a bit. I'm hot for that DS Wizardry for example

The RARE switcheroo.

The jury is still out on whether it was worth it for MS, but there's no denying the magnitude at the time.

Also, EA snagging the NFL license exclusively. I'd say 2K fans felt betrayed.

Ultima Online 2 cancelled.

Ultima Online: Origins (UXO) cancelled.

Warcraft Adventures cancelled.

Silicon Knights: Sony -> Nintendo -> Microsoft -> ???

Not a game, but I'd say the way Sega handled the end of the Saturn in North America. The dedicated Saturn fanbase may have been tiny, but we certainly were dedicated. They really left us out to dry on a bunch of great games. Guess I can't blame them, really. Wouldn't have been smart on their part. But I'm still kinda bitter.

Oooh, great examples. EA really fucked over competition with that move.

Yeah... True... I was both a Saturn & DC fanboy (after being pretty indifferent about Master System and ambivalent about the Genesis). Sega broke my heart time and again during those years.

Nintendo ones:

Ultra 64 w/ CD-ROM and "Jurassic Park" graphics + Square (FF6 demo) -> Nintendo 64 w/ carts and blurry graphics - Square

Nintendo Playstation / "Bulky Drive" Sony / CDi -> Cancelled -> Sony Playstation

Zelda -> Celda

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes for GC? Wha?
