Ubisoft Admits ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Use Of Dual Protagonists Was “Divisive” And “Split Our Fanbase”

The game should've focus 100% in Naoe
This.

They could've saved themselves a lot of work and unnecessary marketing bullshit if they had just made one playable character, Naoe, and focused on her. And the game plays also like she's the actual main character and Yasuke is a fucking add-in (you play a lot more was Naoe).

I wouldn't mind Yasuke or another male samurai if he at least acted as an Assassins, like climbing and doing stuff like Naoe too but honestly except for the combat, Yasuke is quite annoying to play, he can't climb shit, he is slow and heavy. It's just not what I would expect from a AC protagonist

It also completely ruined the flow of the game. Doing anything other than fighting as Yasuke sucks. He can't do proper parkour and even getting over a chest high wall as Yasuke is infuriating.
On the other hand, Naoe is very nimble and fun to run around and do stealth with, but if she's in one of those big castles which the game has dozens of, it will take her 15 days to kill all the enemies. She is easily the weakest protagonist in melee combat within the series thus far.
So you end up swapping back and forth between them constantly and watching the same loading screen constantly.

That's why when playing with Naoe is best to put the combat on easy, much more satisfying and less annoying

I gave up on it not long after Yasuke joins the 'team'. I was enjoying climbing rooftops and doing all that ninja stuff - the stuff I want to do in an Ass Creed game - but then suddenly you're forced to play missions in a much less fun way. Felt like I'd wasted my money.

As for how they could have implemented dual protagonists without breaking their game, I think they had (at least) a couple of viable approaches:

1) Make both protagonists equally competent at each of the three pillars (mobility, stealth, combat), and make the differences a matter of style and flavour. In this option there should never be an instance where one protag literally cannot do something, and the player is forced to switch.

2) Have them be meaningfully different mechanically (like they did), but in this case switching has to be a button press and instant. So mechanically more like a single character switching between two forms (just presented as two characters). With animus bullshit this should not be difficult to justify.

Even for Ubisoft it is quite difficult to understand how they arrived at the worst combination in this respect.

There are also more ambitious options they could have tried (like both characters are physically present and you are actively playing as a two-character team), but these are likely beyond Ubisoft.

It was one bad choice in a game filled with bad choices. I played as Naoe as much as possible because playing as a lumbering, hulking samurai made no sense in an AC game. Even in prior AC games where the MC were more warrior than assassin, there was still a heavy stealth aspect to the gameplay. They threw that out the window with Yasuke.

Worst part about it to me was Yasuke was the only one of the two who could carry a bow. Didn't make any sense.

I guess I'm in the minority here. In my about 35 hours of playtime before I quit I played as Yasuke 80% of the time.
He's an overpowered Terminator.
I only used Naoe to do Reach High Points and fetch pages.

Also coming from Valhalla I didn't mind just breaking down doors and wrecking shit 😊

"We regret not releasing the game with yasuke as the only protagonist"

Fuck sake they had the perfect formula.
Would have been a banger without their retard agenda in it.

Yasuke was a noob tube. Sneaking around and taking down enemies one at a time is what the game is built for.

But the biggest problems are still the empty world, horrible missions and open-ended structure.

I was ok with it in Syndicate although i played the game mostly as Evie as i could, thats not quite the reason Ubisoft lol, at least they were both English in a game set in England.

The problem obviously was the wokism, not having two main characters.

And well, instead of wasting money to pay woke/DEI censors they should have spent that money instead in hiring proper historians and "Japanese ancient culture" experts, because many Japanese felt insulted with several things.
