Biggest fanbase betrayal?

Sega cancelling the release of the virtually finished US version of Shenmue 2 for DC and moving it to the douchebox. Fuck them.

"Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel" for consoles from Interplay ("by gamers, for gamers") and the soon-to-be-announced "Fallout: Morrowind with Guns" game from Bethesda.

I'll give EA another one, for the way they handled and eventually destroyed Origin. And because that meant we never got the last two, planned Wing Commander games.

How will we ever know if Blair lived?!

Oh shit, is that ever true. I LOVED Origin back in the day, and the moment EA Acquired them, they pretty much turned to shit.

:lol

It should be interesting though. I hope they keep the general feel of Fallout. I'm not sure if doing another traditional Fallout would have been good for the series. With that said, i'll be sad if Bethesda's take on Fallout sucks.

Amen, brother. Ultima and Wing Commander alone blazed trails. To see them reduced to the Ultima Online company was so hard to watch.

For me personally it have to be this.

I would have no problem if the games were on GC AND PS2, but only GC? Thats retarded, Capcom.

I guess personally it would be Sega getting out of the hardware business. Mistakes made aside, the old Sega can never be duplicated

I love that picture, it looks like they were caught by the cameras in the middle of a dirty act

Not to mention stuff like Strike Commander, Crusader, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Bioforge and Privateer.

Origin was making Mature games before that was a buzzword. They always pushed the envelope graphically.

The frustrating thing about the Post-EA era is that games like Ultima IX were obviously brilliant somewhere underneath the bugs.

This is all too painful...

I'm not trying to derail the thread, but can anyone think of a company that's NEVER really betrayed the fans?

Atlus, maybe. There are few others. :lol

Easy:

Sir-Tech (Wizardry, Jagged Alliance)
Through The Looking Glass (THIEVES!)
Enix? (Dragon Warrior)

Well, Sir-Tech made some shoddy games (e.g. Druid) and also the abortion that was Wizardry Gold, so I wouldn't include them.

Enix has had some issues too (mostly with stuff that they never brought over to the US).

Looking Glass is untouchable, though. Every game they've made has been truly great. Even something like Terra Nova, which doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to their other work, rocked my socks.

That deal was obviously for Nintendo's sake.. I don't think Capcom was all dancing about having exclusive titles on the GameCube, besides maybe Mikami. Plus PS2 got RE4. :)

Yeah and thank the higher ups at Capcom everyday for RE4. Awesome game! :D

I still want REmake and RE0 on PS2. I did beat Zero when I had a Cube but it would be nice to have them in the collection again.

Final Fantasy 7. Not because Square jumped ship to Sony's side...But because before I played FF7 I was a HUGE FF fanboy. After I finished FF7...Well it was like all the Star Wars dorks who camped outside their local theater for 5 months waiting for Phantom Menace. They REALLY tried hard to convince themselves it was worth it only to end up hating Episode 1 in the end. And now with all the FF7 milking Squeenix is doing...

Square what have I done? Why do you continue to torment me with stale and overplayed mediocrity???

you guys are retarded. WW did not betray fans. Did zelda fans NOT buy the game? Were they atleast somewhat satified with the game as a whole? Also saying Sunshine was a betrayal just because it wasnt as great (in your opinion, not mine) than m64 is just deuchbaggery

If you used your head you would relize the biggest betrayal was giving XBOX the DOA titles. Think of what this meant to the Japanese fan base and what it meant to people here you prefer Japanese-made games (who therefore own a PS2 and not an XBOX)

AWESOME

great pick. Heres an instance where a developer seriously told their fanbase to fuck off while it pursued bigger sells.... and succeeded unfortunately.

Man, I totally forgot. Close the thread indeed, cause this post just won.

Whatever bullshit Ubishit may spew in their press releases, they didn't suceed at all. I hope Poop3 bombs, with a vengeance.

Blame yourself for not being able to adapt beyond the h4rdc0r3 0ldsc001. FF1-6 were great, but FF7-10 (and hopefully 12) have been so much more interesting and expansive.

I dunno. I agree with the original assertion. FF from VII onward have been letdowns, with the exception of IX, which catered to FF1-6 fans.

Bring on the GBA remakes (and don't gimp them like FFI&II!).

One might look at Star Wars Galaxies recently... the game got a complete redesign after like 3 years of building a sizable userbase.

Mind you, I like the new design, but lots of people are pissed about it.

But POP3 will be just like SoT. Why hope it bombs? Still hurt? ;)

Catering = taking every single major plot twist and name from those games and creating mish mash. I guess unoriginality goes far with you old schoolers as long as it's oldschool! :lol

Has nothing to do with old school...It is just FF7, 8 and 10 have all sucked in both battle system and story aspects. I don't exactly care for the artwork in any of them (hyper-effeminent men just aren't my thing) and all the characters seem to be bland 2 dimentional cookie cutter products. Now I haven't played 9 (which is ironic since that appeals to me the most in terms of artwork and looks like a throwback to 1-6) but I haven't given a shit about any of the numbered Final Fantasy games since the most overrated game in history.

Yeah. . . I think the change from SD-style characters took its toll, as did the shift to Sci-Fi storylines.

The switch to bad 3d graphics as opposed to sprites didn't help either.

There's more than plot at the center of this issue.

Nintendo lured me into an alley with the promise of a N64 and then cut my face up and stole my wallet. Oh wait...that was something different.

I would think Square taking their real rpg support from Nintendo. I mean, whether they had good reason or not, that still seems like one of the largest movements in console history. Beyond just leaving the Nintendo-only crowd, they helped solidify the failure of the cartridge console, etc.

Capcom and GCN FTW.

There was a whole lot of shit going on with them and the Capcom 5, it's like they were a new company and couldn't make a good business decision if it bit them in the ass.

The crap that was Phantasy Star III. Ugh, that game still chaps my ass.

Personally, I'd say the switch to online was more of a betrayal!

PSO was still cool though! It just wasn't what the fans REALLY wanted.
