Billionaire CEO threatens to fire employees if Obama wins

What?

He's simply saying that any additional financial burdens imposed on him will wind up hurting his employees, and he doesn't want to see that happen.

Do you also happen to get angry at fathers who refuse to buy their spoiled kids ferraris and thousand dollar dresses?
You can't really be this far off base. It has to be a joke.

It's one random asshole. Stop propagating this childish us-vs-them attitude when it comes to wealthy people, it makes you look petty and jealous.
One...out of many who share his beliefs. Many who have power and can decide the fates of people they have power over.

And plenty who don't. People make a conscious decision to give them that power, it's not like a job is the only way to earn a living, especially in the 21st century.

So because the company is the most profitable it has ever been in the past, if profits in the future decrease (but is still profitable), then employees need to be let go. WHAT?

This logic already exists in most big-chain media companies.

"We aren't making 20 percent profits... only 10 percent? Fire people until we get to 20 percent again!"

Contrary to belief, most of those media companies WERE profitable (at lower rates than historical levels) until they started firing people left and right and diluted their product.

This picture of the guy is awesome.

It is like he is Doctor Evil except that instead of stroking his cat he had it killed, skinned, and uses it to adorn his grand piano.

This type of attitude has been much more blatant and prevalent with the down economy. Businesses taking advantage of things to commit extortion against employees and unions. We felt it at my old job starting 2 years ago and they even ended up with our union in their pockets regurgitating their same old rhetoric "you will take it and like it because you have a job, whine and they will ship the jobs back overseas" Hell look at that recent Wal-mart thread and the purveying attitude there of don't try to improve your work conditions because you will lose your job. Papa johns CEO feels the same way just put it more delicately.

Because companies nowadays are ran by shortsighted fools that place sycophants underneath them to stroke their egos and make them the most money regardless how the company is ran into the ground. None of them look at the big picture of the economy as a whole realizing they are just continually destroying our economy with their hoarding and profit focus. Neither Obama or Romney are focusing on that to fix the economy so both will fail.

That would be illegal, absolutely. But what his email says is not illegal. Just really shitty. He doesn't hint that people will be terminated based on whether they voted for Obama or not.

EDIT:

lol, ThinkProgress just got punked big time.

DOUBLE EDIT:

Even better, it turns out it's real, and the CEO apparently loved the fake email so much he copied it. WOW.

I think you've been missing the war on workers and the poor since Reagan. The wealthy started this a long time ago, won more than imaginable and still want more.

Examples of other means would help your argument at this point

You can learn any valuable skill and sell it through any sort of platform (Fiverr, Odesk, create your own company, many more examples). It's not like you need a college degree to take advantage of the limitless resources on the internet or your local library. Millions of people make their living through non-conventional means nowadays. I personally have made a living playing online poker for a while, and now through online affiliate marketing, all self-learned. The internet has allowed us to remove the middle man, and alot of people are taking advantage of that.

Nothing is stopping you from taking your life into your own hands, but your own laziness, at least that's what I am seeing in alot of GAFfers.

Im not for sure what fairy world you live in but the vast majority of the country would not just be able to start their own business or do something online. It has nothing to do with laziness either. You should educate yourself before making ridiculous remarks like that.

This requires time and training that a lot of people don't have. These young 'entrepreneurs' are people who grew up with the internet, realize it's potential, were able to live at home without bills or responsibilities and given the freedom to nurture their talent and drive.

If you're in a situation where you're on your own and have to work full time to survive + go to school full time if you want a better job in the future you may have some hours per week to get this internet training in, or learning poker, but that's some hours per week. It's nowhere near enough consistent time to grow. And that's people living on their own with no help, imagine if they had to take care of kids, it's a nightmare and makes people want to kill themselves because of the immense overbearing pressure.

People like these ceo's actively work against helping them because they want to buy 4 houses instead of 3. We could raise the minimum wage and give people the time to grow and learn something on their own while working part time so they don't have to work full time but nope they're all leechers use your boot straps lazy fucks etc. and so on. It's nonsense.

They want you to believe that we live in a class system where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.

If [Obama is re-elected], you can find me in the Caribbean sitting on the beach, under a palm tree, retired, and with no employees to worry about.
Thanks for setting everything straight, I guess.

The best part is that he's threatening people that have no actual influence over federal policy, which makes him a moron and an extortionist.

I don't know what it's like in the US exactly but living in a much more left-leaning country (the Netherlands), I definitely agree on having a good standard of living for everybody, and equal chances in early life. It's a healthier and more humane society. But the attitude of some GAFfers towards wealthy people is just ridiculous, as if they were all born with a golden spoon in their mouth and are now obligated to serve them with jobs. The majority of these "job creators" have earned their money by taking huge risks, working very hard and adding alot of value to society.

The real reason?

Siegel is a member of several GOP Superpacs and is buddy-buddy with several Republican politicians, including fellow business owner Romney. Since Florida is traditionally a big swing state (as seen most notably in 2000), he's likely just trying to push a few more voters over to the Romney side. And like I said, he gets away with it, due to at-will employment laws.

This shows he's even more of an idiot. Granted it's unlikely, but a reporter can ask Romney if he supports such a notion and I'm sure Romney will flip-flop or gaffe it in some way.

No, they just need to pay back to society a bit. Nothing wrong with rich people around and most did work hard.

But there is this weird thing where many of the ones that largely inherited their wealth (Koch Brothers, Walton family, Steve Forbes, etc.) act like they did it all on their own and that any taxes on the rich are a bad discouragement to become wealthy. And many that really did earn their wealth (Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, George Soros, etc.) have no problem paying slightly higher taxes and keeping the estate tax around.

Taxes are significantly higher in the Netherlands compared the US. The US doesn't get healthcare nor do we have as good of education. Many people cannot leave their jobs because they have to keep company health insurance because they wouldn't qualify otherwise (until obamacare goes into effect that is). God forbid a few people make a few wise crack comments about the situation currently in the US. Its not going to hurt the rich to pay a little more to help out so we can have the education so other people can better their lives or not die because they can't afford healthcare.

Timeshare companies aren't adding a whole lot to society.

I could go into a laundry list of reasons why your hodgepodge of ideas is more workable in a country with a strong safety net and generous, universal public services than it is in the US, but I am sure you are familiar.

I completely agree. It should be noted though that the top 5% in the US already pay nearly 60% of all income taxes: http://www.ntu.org/tax-basics/who-pays-income-taxes.html

I work in the Westgate Resorts Corporate Office Call Center in Orlando. Upon getting ready for my shift yesterday I saw this email in my inbox and read it with my jaw dropped. Just to let you know, I graduated from college with a 4-year degree in 2011, and have been unable to get a job until I found this call center position with Westgate.

Although it's not my #1 career choice, I'm happy to be working. After reading this email from my boss, I am reconsidering my position with the company. Is this a man I want to work under? Someone who threatens my employment if I don’t vote for his preferred candidate? His email insults the intelligence of everyone who works for him.

I got my college degree I can have some security in my life, and now that security is being taken away from me by my current employer. While I am lucky to have a job and a paycheck every 2 weeks, I can’t help but feel my self-respect is at stake by working under this man.

Again you show that you don't know what its like at all to be in the US. The poor and middle class pay a disproportional amount of their income in payroll, sales, property etc taxes. Income taxes are only one portion and the rich in our country hold the vast majority of the wealth so of course they are going to make up most the income taxes.

That is a very misleading statistic though. First of all that ignores other taxes such as property taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes, payroll taxes, etc. And it ignores that they just make a massive amount of money compared to the rest of the people. The income gap has grown significantly over the past 3 decades.

I'm sure lots of poor people would be happy to pay much more in taxes if they had jobs that paid them much more. But you can't get blood from a stone.

It's not just that they have most of the wealth. Over the decades, more of the new wealth that is created is going to the top as well. So, the middle and lower class are working longer and harder then they ever have, while the fight for a decreasing slice of the pie, while the already rich people are creating more wealth for themselves off of the work of the working class.

Banana republic, here we come.

exactly. even if we all paid the same % in income tax the wealthy still would make up a higher percentage. Top 5% should really pay around 85% of income taxes in my opinion. 60% is far too low considering the huge amount they take in.

During the USA's most prosperous times after WWII the top tax rate was 90% or higher, proof that you can have a booming economy and prosperity for all with a high tax on the wealthy as long as you invest the money in stuff that benefits all like infrastructure.

I wanted to compare him to Doctor Doom, but I think Doctor Doom is actually interested in the economic well-being of his nation.

Is this THE David Siegel, the guy who said he's responsible for George Bush being elected via illegal means? Yeah... what a nutjob.

one and the same.

Wouldn't mean shit. Florida, like most of the country, has "at will" employment laws that allow employers to give no reason to fire you. The only way you can sue is through racial discrimination...sexual and political are allowed.

it is not true that the only way you can sue is for racial discrimination. political party affiliation is not a protected class (which is not to say this is legal, i dont know the law well enough), but there are several besides just race:

religion, national origin, gender, family status, veteran status, disabilities, and age are all protected classes. there is also something about health, but i am not sure exactly what it is. something like if you have a genetic disease you cant be discriminated against for it, maybe?
