Binary Domain TGS Trailer

in terms of a japanese studio ripping the shit out of gears of war? :P

edit: this game does look decent/competent at least though, but it really isn't anything like Vanquish.

Completely agree the game is nothing like Vanquish, but to call it Quantum Theory 2 is not fair either ;)

BD have bigger budget and great studio behind it. SEGA promoted it very strong in Japan. It's not gonna have Yakuza numbers there, but it will do ok.

And, yea, the shooter mechanic is very close to Gears, but the robots AI is quite, quite different. It's also very heavy on story with more than 4 hours of cut-scenes.

Also, Consequence System is something that neither Gear, nor Quantum Theory had.

It's really interesting Japanese project, new IP, and if the game in the end have some gameplay and overall production quality, it can move at least 500k worldwide in the first six months.

Even more if the campaigning is long (more than 10 hours) and multiplayer is fun enough to create some community.

Binary Domain is the game to beat in 2012. I really don't understand how people could be more excited for nonsense like Mass Effect 3. And Max Payne 3, really? Come on, people. I don't think most realize the power of Nagoshi and his team when it comes to crafting an interesting world and amazing characters. Yakuza has offered us some of the most realistic, believable, and well crafted plots in the medium. Binary Domain will be NO different, almost better, from what I've seen and read.

Seriously, WHY do people like Mass Effect so much? And why do these same people show no interest for a game like Binary Domain? At their core, they are both sci-fi, 3rd person, cover based shooters. What does Mass Effect have that makes it so special? What, is it because you have "choice"? Do people like Mass Effect because you can choose to have sex with gay aliens? This is what gaming is about now? Give me a break. And I don't even want to hear "but it's an RPG and I like RPGs" argument because Yakuza and Binary (from what's been shown) are as much of an RPG as Mass Effect 2 is one.

So, why the resistance gaming community? Why do you continue to purchase Mass Effect games? Why do people continue to make these games such a priority? Please explain.

Hey guys, it's going to bomb regardless of whether people on GAF buy it or not. See Rayman Origins.

It's not our responsibility to market their games. THAT is what I'm sick of. People acting like we work for these companies.

You be quiet, for I owe a great debt to Toshihiro Nagoshi the man who brought me Virtua Striker, daytona, supermonkyball, fzero gx and yakuza.

whats wrong with supporting a great game.

500k worldwide is very optimistic

Why? I think it will do better than Vanquish.

Japan loves Nagoshi, most (if not all) of the Yakuza actors are in BD, the game is heavy on story, have multiplayer and coop (?).

SEGA ships 800k copies of Vanquish, at later date (SEGA's next financial quarter) they ships another 20k.

Of course, i'm not talking 500k at 60$ - "it can move at least 500k worldwide in the first six months."

This is absolutely nothing like Vanquish. This is more like Quantum Theory 2.

No-one else sees the resemblance? Looks like Vanquish but a lot slower and without the boost. Gameplay might be closer to Quantom Theory and Gears but the art, location, fighting robots and setting are van.

Looks like we're playing as the same dude too.

I am so going to roll the Asian chick and the Robot with the bandana. I wish you could mess with your character appearance ala Mass Effect.

You're acting ridiculous. Why the hell are you talking about Mass Effect? A completely different genre, and great series in it's own right.

Anyways, I just found out about this game like 2 days ago. This shit looks absolutely amazing. I've never even played the Yakuza games but I know of their quality. This game looks like it's no joke. The story from the trailers looks fantastic.

if that trailer comes off as exciting, you should at least check out yakuza 3 or 4.

obviously they aren't as fast paced, or even gun based, but the character setups and development needs to be experienced.

Taking control of a Nagoshi Team character feels special in the first seconds you see them, it never takes hours to make you want to play as them. Yakuza 4 nailed 3 additional characters with ease. Akiyama is cool immediately, it takes no more then 3 fucking sentences and you're thinking "ok, this guy is a badass"

Since Mass Effect 3 looks like they are going for an even more go-go action shooter game then the second game was, it is in fact comparable to Binary. No matter what choices you made, you still didn't have a facial texture at the end cutscene.

If you were a total badass, you never saw people cowering at the sight of you, or people praising you if you were an angel. None of that choice shit made any difference. it just decides skill tree direction. snooze central.

I think his post is a little much as well

but it's in response to multiple people in this thread turning down this game for ME3

So he's not the only one making the comparison

Yeah I've definitely wanted to check out Yakuza over the years. Kinda don't know where to start though.

Also, does anybody know if there are some quiet parts to Binary Domain? It seems like there might be a little just walking around and chatting with people. I love that sort of stuff.

The PS2 games are still very much worth playing through so you may want to start there to familiarize yourself with all of the clans and central characters in the game.

i did see a character in the trailer who reminded me of a yakuza character.

I can't imagine even an action focused game as this not having some if not a lot of those Nagoshi things like side missions, fun mini-games and maybe something to eat.

I'm not expecting Kazuma Karts or anything though

A karaoke mini game in BD needs to happen. I about lost my shit watching Kazuma perform karaoke and sounding like Gackt or some shit.

From the beginning if you can get your hands on the PS2 games. I did a few months ago and thought the held up extremely well.

If not, start with 3.

No clue. Very little is known

All we know is you can purchase weapons and upgrades from shops with the points you get from the game.

Probably some fun unlockables to work towards in there as well.

No-one else sees the resemblance?

Unless BD has us controlling a guy in white techno armor scooting around with booster rockets, nobody is going to admit any similarity. We live in world where everyone seems to think every comparison is an invalid one between apples and oranges. I just read a comment from someone stating that GTA and Saints Row are "nothing alike".

I brought up Mass Effect for various reasons. First of all, there were a few people in this thread that mentioned games like Mass Effect 3 and Max Payne 3 as games that will pull attention away from Binary. I was just questioning why that has to be. Also, as I mentioned in my previous post, both games are comparable on core levels. Mass Effect is a 3rd person, sci-fi shooter with RPG elements. Binary is basically the same type of game (although we don't know the extent of the RPG elements, but from what we've seen, it will be as much of an RPG as Mass Effect 2 was). So, why do these games continue to sell, but something like Binary Domain, that CLEARLY appeals to the Mass Effect crowd, is getting trashed left and right by the general gaming community.

This is absolutely nothing like Vanquish. This is more like Quantum Theory 2.

No this game actually looks good and may have actual solid storytelling.

And at least it's characters and aesthetics don't seem close to Gears, unlike QT who's looks try to steal from Gears, but also it's lines.

I hope this game does well and finds an audience. This is the type of Japanese effort that needs to succeed. Not because it's a shooter that represents a more international effort, but because if it doesn't succeed it will send a strong message to Japanese developers to just keep, by in large, attempting niche products.

This is an A class effort and expense from one of Japans biggest devs, that's known for their somewhat dated Yakuza series, that's clunky and PS2 esque (still wonderful), so there's more on the line than than a Vanquish or Quantum Theory. If they can successfully transition to making a third person shooter? That's a big confidence boost for their industry that's constantly struggling with western staple genres.

Hopefully they succeed, the game looks great, and very Japanese with an attention to detail that's just mind blowing. I just wish it had some multiplayer mode.

While I agree that this looks like a good effort to appeal to western gamers (as in the game itself will be good), I don't think SEGA quite gets how to really get the message through to said gamers.

The western audience will mostly see the game like this

and that's just incredibly generic looking. Bald Space Marines being a sure fire hit in North America is a dumb meme and not really a marketing tool that you should exhaust without thinking.

Everything about this game from previews screams Mindjack / Quantum Theory levels of mediocre.

The alpha version that was playable on the floor at E3 was already far better and already more polished product than the final version of either of those two games.

My goodness, Nagoshi is a god amongst game devs! This trailer is incredible! I love Ryu ga Gotoku, and this looks brilliant in a completely different direction!

Yep. I'm sold. I heard the dialog might be cheese ball, but the overall story and world seem really interesting to me. Plus, I fucking love the Yakuza games.

I've played the game at a demo and I don't know if cheese ball is the description I would use. It's light, that's for sure.

I'm seriously looking forward to this game... bummed that it got delayed a couple weeks, but still very excited to check it out.
