bitmap books is dead to me now

well shit looks like i was wrong about them just busting each others chops.

Messing with a man's genuinely earned income because you don't like each other is an incredibly cowardly move.

The company choosing to act in the way they did is an incredibly sad and petty thing to do.

You just want to get them all in a room and tell them to stop being such fucking babies.

No one was offended by his posts. Fact.

I rest my case your honor.

bitmap Book had to cancel a book before but they never had pre-orders open for it.
I bring this up because they could have canceled this book out right but no they need the money and i don't think they're going to give the royalties to the charity I think they're going to keep them in their own pocket.

A company so scared of their own shadow they will close shop if someone slams a door in their vicinity or a woke company. Which is it? I'm guessing both.

Nobody knows who this company or any of these people are and those Mickey Mouse ass tweets are less offensive than fat Americans clapping. This company must be run or funded by REEEtardera members, why were you ever buying their shit in the first place?

Screw people who are offended by hurty words - because it's often those people who say the craziest, most aggressive, and flippantly hostile things imaginable. And they tend to get away with it, too.

It's always funny when a company making very niche products, relying heavily on retaining their loyal fanbase to stay afloat, does something stupid to get some completely worthless points from the twitter mob.

Jesus, what a shitshow.

I really don't understand why the author accepts this. I mean, I doubt he wrote a book for charity. And I really don't see how the publisher has any right to refuse royalties to the author based on the fact that he… wrote some tweets three years ago? What prevents the dude to just take his book and find another publisher? Surely this condition must be a breach of contract.

And wow, the dude who has a beef with him and stirred shit is st1ka? I'm genuinely disappointed. I've enjoyed many retro gaming YT videos from the guy.

They're pussies for not including the "offensive content". If you make a statement like that you have to include the receipts.

After reading the messages I feel embarrassed for both parties for making such a mountain out of a molehill.

I wonder why. I bought the FPS series of books and they were pretty damn awesome as they mention a lot of obscure titles. Plus i like things physical. So yeah, sue me for vanity.
I should have added i was only speaking about french vg publishing houses, specifically Pix'n'love.
Very predatory and lazy towards authors and readers.
Anyway buying books and reading them is always good, as long as you enjoy your time.

I think the trick people are missing is that most of the actual heat Bitmap got over this was over at Bluesky, where there was an active (and very busy) thread going over how bad the book is. He opens the Chrono Trigger entry with "seven reasons why Chrono Trigger is a Final Fantasy", refers to the SNES Final Fantasy games by their old American numbering, and champions bad localisation because it's what he experienced when he was lad, and if it makes him nostalgic that makes it good. Wellredmage is a pompous, less insightful Projared. People there had plenty of animus to give the company abuse for putting out something so low quality, and the racist thing just became another stick to do it with.

I can't see how he got past editorial and I suspect part of why things went the way they did is that someone high at Bitmap feels the same way. He also has a lot of bad blood with other content creators beyond just St1ka (who is actually Portuguese and not Brazilian) and that seems to have gotten lost in the retelling as well.

Predatory and lazy? How?
I've bought several PnL books, never had a problem.

Seems a bit over the top. I watch St1ka's channel. His whipping up the campaign that got this guy pulled from his book makes me think a lot less of him.

One thing no one is mentioning is that he has some Portuguese blood in him.

So shitting on Brazil is just part of his nature.

As a brazilian I don't see the issue. Since 1822 most portugueses hate Brazil, it's part of their identity.

Good for you, even better if you had fun reading.
I won't google search for you, but i remember that their early releases were mostly glorified wikipedia pages, without the sourcing, and on top of that numerous delivery problems for the buyers.

Well, the topic is very outdated

Bitmap Books have already made another statement now saying that they've reached an agreement and the authour is having 100% of his royalties lol

Now Resetera is mad

By doing so Bitmap Books have fucked themselves with both sides. Stupid.

And the authour is now saying that he beat cancel culture, and everyone should buy his book to show cancel culture how its done

What a shitshow, honestly

My 2 cents about the whole situation: I'm brazilian, and I didnt feel offended by what he said. I see worse in GAF everyday lol

With that said, people should be aware of what they post online under their real name. It's 2025, have some common sense.

They backpedalled.

But still, the damage is done.
Who in their right mind would still do business with them as an author?

They have proven now that they'll at least want to kick you to the gutter the second they don't like any of your opinions.
Even if yes, these opinions were actually dumb and insulting (but he apologized and we know insane Twixxer rants do happen on a bad day, so, eh, whatever).

But who is to say they won't find some other opinion "unsupportable" at some point in the future, and won't do the same thing again?
They only reversed course because people got mad this time - could've gone VERY differently.

its just factual that they didnt get some modern consoles there.

I'm not really commenting on this situation but context is always helpful instead of arguing without knowing (I don't mean you Kuranghi). One could still be incorrect but we can at least try.

I had a Brazilian student (probably in his 30s) tell me they didn't have a lot of access video games when he was growing up. I found out that Brazil has extremely high import fees on foreign electronics and other goods. It was not even legal to import foreign-made games until the 1990s. If you wanted a game console, it seems like you had to buy one on the black market. If anyone can read Portuguese, here's an article (high PS4 prices) about it. I found part of it translated, plus machine translated, but it posited that it would be cheaper to fly to Miami and buy a PS4 and bring it back than to buy one in Brazil. To be fair, visa processing fees and also some kind of "goods bought abroad" tax exists as well, which would throw off this number.

If you compare the US and Brazil, Brazil has a much lower standard of living than the US. If a consumer wanted to buy a game console, he has to hope he lives post-import ban, and then has to purchase a console with an inflated price, with less money than a hypothetical American counterpart.

Also, I swear I don't have sour grapes suddenly but I bought their book The Games That Weren't. I expected there to be more visuals as games are visual medium. There was a lot of text, which seemed pretty good. On the other hand, I bought Super Mario The Ultimate Guide from Costco for $10 and that had what I was expecting. If you check the Bitmap Books website, that's how it's advertised too.

One more thing: My student thought Blanka from Street Fighter was an offensive depiction of Brazilians. I told him "No, Blanka is weird. He is not meant to represent Brazilians in general. Compare him to the people in the back of his stage." Anyway, uh... boa tarde amigo! I didn't think Nerevar would be an Argonian either... n-not that there's anything wrong with that!
