its just factual that they didnt get some modern consoles there.
I'm not really commenting on this situation but context is always helpful instead of arguing without knowing (I don't mean you Kuranghi). One could still be incorrect but we can at least try.
I had a Brazilian student (probably in his 30s) tell me they didn't have a lot of access video games when he was growing up. I found out that Brazil has extremely high import fees on foreign electronics and other goods. It was not even legal to import foreign-made games until the 1990s. If you wanted a game console, it seems like you had to buy one on the black market. If anyone can read Portuguese, here's an
article (high PS4 prices) about it. I found part of it translated, plus machine translated, but it posited that it would be
cheaper to fly to Miami and buy a PS4 and bring it back than to buy one in Brazil. To be fair, visa processing fees and also some kind of "goods bought abroad" tax exists as well, which would throw off this number.
If you compare the US and Brazil, Brazil has a much lower standard of living than the US. If a consumer wanted to buy a game console, he has to hope he lives post-import ban, and then has to purchase a console with an inflated price, with less money than a hypothetical American counterpart.
Also, I swear I don't have sour grapes suddenly but I bought their book
The Games That Weren't. I expected there to be more visuals as games are visual medium. There was a lot of text, which seemed pretty good. On the other hand, I bought
Super Mario The Ultimate Guide from Costco for $10 and that had what I was expecting. If you check the Bitmap Books website, that's how it's advertised too.
One more thing: My student thought Blanka from Street Fighter was an offensive depiction of Brazilians. I told him "No, Blanka is weird. He is not meant to represent Brazilians in general. Compare him to the people in the back of his stage." Anyway, uh... boa tarde amigo! I didn't think Nerevar would be an Argonian either... n-not that there's anything wrong with that!
