Once I let people know that I am black, immediately they tell me that they know a black person and s/he is like "totally" their best friend, or ask if we can play NBA Live online and will I spot them 10 pts, that kind of stuff. Is it always like this? Can other black folks relate? Perhaps we should create our own separate internet where we won't be subjected to stereotypes and harassment.

All kidding aside, it IS a weird phenomenon. I'm dating a girl who is half Dutch/half Chinese, and she has told me about several occasions where some random guy commented to her that she "looked Asian" and then rambled on -- to her face! -- about how Asian girls feel extra good because their you-know-whats are "slanted sideways."

Yeah, it's like that in any game I play.
Most of the time though, when it's discovered I'm black, I get "kill the n*gger!!11" or other such things.

Of course, that's mostly because I'm playing FPSes online.

In places I post at though, I'm usually the person that's all like "lolol i'm black wow!1" and shit; posts are funnier that way.

It's interesting isn't it? Most of my friends are actually of asian descent (my wife is chinese too) but I'm italian. Why is the whole white/black issue still so prevalent today? Is it more pronounced in the U.S. as opposed to Canada? This could be a very interesting topic to see what kind of viewpoints / experiences people have with this.

I will never forget the time that I was on XBL with a few of you tards and one of you had the goddamn nerve to comment that I don't sound black... how the hell are black people suppose to sound..huh...HUH?!?!?!?!?!?!

Then again one day I called my grandmother and briefly spoke to her new husband a bit back.... later on he confused to her at the beginning of the conversation he thought it was a friggin bill collector because I sounded white... :(

people will never stop stereotyping. Just because you are white or black, its like you are expected to act or behave black or white, what the hell is acting black or white. I am a black man and i cannot sing, dance or well i at least know how to play ball. I listen to everything except country. Last year i was driving on campus blasting Jimmy Hendrix and when i stopped at a light, there these 3 blacks chicks crossing and they gave me this look like "what the hell is wrong with you". My point is just because i am black, i am expected to listen to rap but i happen to like alternative music and my favourite band is Coldplay. :D

Are they totally sideways, like horizontal, or just kinda slanted? And is your girlfriend's less slanted because she's part dutch, or is it like a you-have-it-or-you-don't thing?

I'm sad to say that in my last days at Uni I was sitting next to a black guy in the computer lab who was blasting a Michelle Branch tune out of his headphones on repeat for like a hour straight and it seriously wierded me out.

Though I think the Sailor Moon pics he was perusing at the same time were what made the whole thing surreal.

as long as i treat all the people i talk to with respect and dignity, i expect the same back.

i don't ask people if they're white, black, asian, chinese etc if i'm chatting with them or playing a game online.

some people are waaaay too focused on race. why not focus on just being human and getting along with everyone?

The other day, my brother and his friend were playing Halo 2 on Live, using my account. I have the name "AfrikaShoxx", which is the name of a Leftfield song (and also 'cuz I'm slightly interested in African history/politics). So, some assholes were playing and they repeatedly called my brother a n****r and actually booted him off the game for thinking he was black :p

(note - I'm a total cracker :p)

I've gotten "are you from another country?" a couple of times during high school because I didn't do the whole "Hay y'all I be fixin' to be doin' sumfin' and imul do it" thing like most everyone else there.

This was from other black kids, though. :\

One day when I was playing dreamcast pso, some dude joined the party and asked if anyone in the room was black. I said 'yeah' thinking he might have been black too and wanted just wanted to know if anybody else was for some reason.

But noooooo, as soon as I said yeah he started up with the nazi bullshit and such. Then, he started using the custom smileys he made. All of them made with nazi shit in them. Pretty funny though, seeing cute pso smileys with all that nazi stuff.

Seriously it's hard to know exactly what they're thinking. I guess they're trying to be polite and since they feel awkward talking to a black guy (wow! how special is that?) and they're not too bright, the first thing they say is that they know a black guy that... [insert various bullshit here] to show you that they like or they have no problem with or they socialize with blacks (like blacks are something different from the rest). And since they have so many stereotypes they're trying to communicate with you like you're an alien from another planet who has only certain habits and hobbies. I've tried to explain this behaviour a lot of times since I find it very -how can I describe this- strange, stupid, annoying and amusing all at the same time, and this is the most logical explanation I could find...
