So because it's something they are doing in their spare time and for free means it is immune from criticism? It's taken them like, 8 years and we've barely had anything from them.

If you guys spent the last 6 years of your life creating something, you want as many people to see it as possible. Doing the 20k advertising bs is a cost free, easy, reasonably effective way of getting forums and the internet talking. I don't understand, people always complain about entitlement but everyone who whined about the 20k shit seem to be the entitled ones. It's a free mod why are you guys complaining about screenshots.
There seems to be so much bitter resentment because it's taken so long and they haven't spoken much about it, with so many posts talking about 'fuck these guys nobody cares about this shit anymore' etc. and so on. I don't understand the hostility. It's a fucking remake of HL1 people have waited longer for much less and at least you're not being charged for it (and if they were charging it's not going to be 60 bucks). You know damn well everyone is going to try this out if it turns out to be polished and up to snuff.

If the only reason for criticism is that it takes them a very long time, then I think the hate is inappropriate, yes. If the mod turns out to be shit, that's another story.

Who the fuck cares? Every time there's a Black Mesa Source thread on NeoGAF, it's filled with a bunch of this:
What do they owe you? Nothing, technically. Nobody here has certainly given any of them money. At best, you could claim that they've "wasted your time", but let's be realistic here - how much time have they really wasted?
There's one thread every nine months where a bunch of people pile in and remind us that they don't care anymore (yet they still come in and have to broadcast to the world that they don't care anymore - funny, that) and then the subject goes silent again for 9 months.
So in all the years this has been developing, I'd wager I've wasted, what? A grand total of ten minutes thinking about it? Twenty, if we're being generous. That's fine. It's not exactly like the only thing I'm doing with my life is sitting around in total silence waiting for Black Mesa Source to release. I can wait. Patience is a virtue that I pride myself on.
Meanwhile, we've got another thread of

No seriously, they've handled this whole thing like the amateurs they are while pretending and deluding themselves that they're actually more. I've read the RPS interview with the lead but actions speak louder than words and their actions tell me that they only crave the attention they're getting by doing this.

I wager I've spent about as much time caring about Black Mesa Source as you, i.e. about the 10 minutes you talk about.
Anyway, nothing wrong with saying "I'll believe it when I play it". Because, at this stage, I'll believe it when I play it.
They might not have wasted my time, or my money, or any of my fucks that I give, but that doesn't mean I can't look over their past history, their past promises, and say "Well that looks shifty as fuck"

Time to start up a new List of every event that has happened durring the development of this mod.
And while you're at it, make one for HL3 too.But really, as others said. This is a mod with zero funding and they won't get any money out of the final product. It's no surprise that it took this long. I mean most mods never make it past the their initial concept design or end up being abandoned after the first couple updates. I'm surprised this team has stayed so committed for this long. You have to give them some credit for that.

Is the purpose of this mod to make something look prettier? I'll admit I don't know anything about this mod. I thought this thread was ripping on a budget game for not looking like state of the art crytek tech.
It's a remake of the original Half-Life. I don't think they're aiming to change anything.
Oh ok thanks. Then I take my comment back. If it's just a remake then it's pretty pointless to not look as good as the top level games of today.

The "it's free" deflection doesn't hide the fact that this mod is basically vaporware at this point, and the mod developers have been doing their darnedest to cover up how they didn't expect to keep working on this mod, that they expected to get hired by Valve years ago and that the project was about ten times more ambitious than it should have been.
Okay, it's free and they haven't wasted my time, yet. So what? It doesn't make any difference. They release media, we're going to call them out for taking a long time on a poorly thought out project, especially one that appears to be as poorly managed as it was enormous. And we're also going to talk about the media and whether or not it stands up to they hyping they've been trying to do for the past three years. And it's fair to be critical when we would be investing time into a potential game, which is not a free resource.
Don't say that too loud in case they switch their efforts to Uplink Source.
