'Blade Runner 2049' Is A Box Office Disaster With Poor $13M Friday

The film was Blade Runner, and it delivered on that promise. Thankfully, it did not try to be something other than what it was.

GitS is pretty good example of why making something PG13 with lots of action and shorter runtime won't guarantee $$$. And in the end that crappy movie isn't even 5% as good as the anime.

Vileneuve made a movie for the fans holding nothing back. A proper direct sequel to nearly a 35 year old movie. The director we need but do not deserve..indeed.

Deserved. It was a bad movie tbh. I just cannot recommend a 2.5hrs movie like that to anybody but the biggest of cyberpunk fans.

I enjoyed it, but I feel awful for asking friends to come see it with me.

i'm not even a big cyberpunk and found this to be a great movie
it IS a bit too long though

Movie started off on a really positive note overseas. If it can muster some decent legs in the states I think it'll be alright overall.

Movie got an A- from CinemaScore which seems pretty good all things considered .

Maybe people are staying home waiting for The Director's Cut, or a Workprint cut, or just holding out for The Final Cut as opposed to this Theatrical Cut. ;)

In honesty, went to see it last night with a friend that never saw the original. I love it to death. But I did think the music was my only real negative. Was mixed so damn loud in certain scenes & wasn't all that astounding. Outside of that, loved everything else. My friend left impressed by it; but not really interested in watching it again or even watching the original. I hope the movie has legs; but I'm not sure if it'll pull in a ton of repeat viewers.

Of course, I'd love to be wrong. It definitely deserves success.

I'm sad that Blade Runner 2049 hasn't done super well financially, but I'm so fucking glad they made the movie that they did. They made a movie targeted towards fans of the original, and fans of cerebral thought-provoking sci-fi films. I'm glad they refrained from making a more action-oriented film, or hiring some McG/Michael Bay hack to make a big stupid popcorn spectacle.

This movie will find it's audience eventually.

This movie shouldn't exist. Modern Hollywood should be incapable of making something like this. Yet it made it all the way to the finish line, somehow. I hope it wins some awards, because the artistry on display is incredible. Deakins work especially.

If you consider the difficulty with nailing a sequel to the original while honoring the philosophical questions raised plus translating that world in a way that makes sense to a modern audience... it's just fantastic.

I am so happy it exists. To paraphrase RLM: It can never be undone. And that's wonderful.

I don't think it felt that long ... but, I was invested in it. I enjoyed the film.

Anyway, the box office is disappointing, but not disastrous. It's coming it at over $50 million international ... and I think it'll have a pretty good holdover for next weekend, because there isn't much that competes with its market. Good reviews and word of mouth will help.

So, worldwide, it'll end up bringing in over the budget, plus home sales and rentals. They'll probably break even in the end ... but it won't be the success they were hoping for in the short term. We'll have to wait and see if it has legs like its predecessor.

My wife and I thought it was phenomenal. Amazing atmosphere, music, themes, story, acting--everything. Stuff like this happens because the marketing gets it all wrong. Same thing happened to Mother! Very different movies though obviously. BR2049 is one of the best films we've seen in a while. People just should've been warned/told that it is an existential sci-if noir detective story and not a sci-fi action blockbuster.

Yup. It's there. It'll always be there. It's 2017 and we got a damn Blade Runner sequel that lives up to every expectation placed on it.

The only shame is that awards recognition are usually correlated with box office success, particularly the technical ones. Deakins is probably going to be nominated but he won't win. Which is, once again, horse shit.

This movie shouldn't have been released in October, but November is packed with two huge superhero movies and December is Star Wars. Maybe it should have released in September.

Moving it closer to the monster that is IT or to Kingsman's initial release? There's really no time that's perfect anymore. September wouldn't exactly be an easy month either. It sucks for this movie, but the end of the year seems to be just as full as Summer months with big films.

Well, on the bright side, hopefully this means it’ll come to Blu-ray faster which means I can own it and watch it over and over because it’s an amazing film.

Good. If it made a ton of money they'd make another sequel and it would be shit.

Instead we have an actual good high budget movie for once, which is nice.

I really hope that we can get quality Blade Runner entries every couple of decades by talented sci-fi storytellers. So long as it remains important- if not relatively popular within sci-fi - I think that might happen.

But future entries need to focus on philosophies rather than continue extending Deckard’s story.

That sucks. I thought it was really great. The sad thing is studios are going to be even more reluctant to make things like this, and we're just gonna keep getting superhero movies until the industry crashes apparently.

Wouldn't say this is a good result for lovers of cinema at all. It means less freedom for film makers, as investors become less willing to give money to people that have a unique vision. This also confirms that good reviews don't translate to ticket sales so studios are going to be less inclined to bother doing anything risky.

It's not a good result for film, but it's a good result for making sure Blade Runner doesn't become some super tired thing.

Denis Villeneuve will find work. He's not going to struggle. It'll be blamed on the franchise.

Maybe this will at least end the studios blaming Rotten Tomatoes for poor box office numbers trend. This sort throws a wrench in that excuse.

A woman next to me brought out her blanket and curled up in her seat ready to sleep.
A woman behind me blurted out, "Boring!", all drawn out and dramatic, during a particularly slow but atmospheric sequence. I turned and glared at her, and she in turn started tapping her foot loudly for the next few minutes.

My audience sucked.

ryan gosling is straight boring

RIP Han Solo, you tried

Straight nonsense, they were both superb. Incredibly heartfelt and nuanced performances.

Ford put more effort into this than TFA.

I don't think that's really fair to him. He didn't phone TFA in at all. He talks a lot of shit on the PR circuit, but even for these nostalgia roles he puts in effort. If there's anything lacking, it's in the script and direction.

This is one I'm happy nobody's gonna be in the theater when I see it (my MoviePass is coming in the mail this week).

However, when the top box office of the week makes only $30 million, should we consider the state of cinema-going as well?

I would have asked for a refund or another showtime if that happened to me.

You're crazy. Gosling made the movie. The entire casting was so on point it was insane.
i haven’t seen it yet, will later this week

but the fucking guy had 1 expression in the trailers. he actively makes you not want to watch it, because he looks completely disinterested in the role in the trailers

Denis Villeneuve films are anti-trailer.

It was great for hardcore Blade Runner fans, and I consider Blade Runner 1982 one of my top 3 movies, but it was not a mass market movie and it should not have had this large a budget. It could have cut at least 45 minutes for theatrical release and added that back in for blu-ray DC cut.

I saw it friday, was basically a 7/10 for me (first one would be 9.5/10), told my wife she probably wouldn't like it but she insisted we go see it today. She didn't like it, no big surprise, theater was fairly full but I could tell a lot of people got bored halfway in. At least two people left.

The spoiler thread though is fun to discuss theories and stuff, I honestly have had more fun talking about the movie than actually watching it. I didn't really pick up anything new on a second watch, just some minor dialogue I missed the first time. The three shorts I watched in between my first and second viewing gave me more background than the second viewing.

I do think now I will really enjoy rewatching the first movie a lot more again, even though I watched it last week for like the 70th time.

The way I see it, something that I thought would never happen, a sequel to blade runner, actually got made. It'll come out on Blu-ray and I'll get it in my collection and enjoy it forever. They made a worthy sequel to the original, and even though the masses can't appreciate it, I, and many others, appreciate it and enjoy it. At least we got one last go at that universe.

Damn that sucks.

Couple took their baby to my theater so it was pretty bad. But at least the baby wasn't in the theater long.
