Bleach PSP impressions

Right from the start you know you have a problem when the free Kon keychain that comes with the game says "LOADING" on the back. The loading times are pretty horrendous, figure 20+ secs to load a fight that lasts 1min maybe. Even just to go between menu options you have about 4-5 secs loading.

Anyhow the intro is pretty nice. Basically it's a collection of clips from the anime + new animation. There's some nice stuff in there like Byakuga starting his Bankai with all the swords, but I don't get why they show like 20 characters if the game has 6 characters total ^^;

There is a story mode, a vs. cpu mode, time attack, 2p (if you have 2psps/2games), and an appendix. In the appendix you can unlock videos (has 5 CMs to start with) and cards from the card game (134 total which cost 100 points each to unlock at random). Beating the story mode once with Ichigo unlocked his ending credits roll in the video room and I got 700points which gets you 7 cards. There are also 3 "?" options in the appendix.

Gameplay is ok. Seriously the game should not be on the fucking PSP. For one it runs like ass, maybe it's 30fps I dunno but it slows down all the time and feels clunky. Basically I would go as far as saying from a fighting game fan's perspective it's unplayable. Next the game is the jaggiest game I've seen in my life, it looks absolutely terrible and only if you hold it quite far away it's ok to look at. This kinda clashes with the really nice HQ 2d stills that make up the story mode and pre-battle screens. Control is decent on the pad but hmm... and the camera feels too close and makes the stages feel really small on the PSP screen.

Basically you have basic attacks (X) and 4-5 special attack with a direction + O. If you've played the GC Naruto games it's just like that. You have 3d movement and Triangle jumps. Holding back blocks, and square releases your reiatsu (soul power?). Anyhow the game is all about canned combos which there are plenty of (Ichigo has 23 in his movelist). But all these combos do like 30-50% damage so the matches are short as hell. There is a tug of war meter with reiatsu and when 100% of the reiatsu is on your side, if you hit O or X while releasing reiatsu you do a super move.

Ichigo kinda sucks because he is the only character without a projectile or ranged move. So since blocking is pressing back, it's a bitch to run forward without leaving yourself open. To make up for this they gave him an air dash but it's not really useful.

Renji is the 6th character but he's not playable from the start and must be unlocked. His sword leaves a trail which I'm not even sure was intentional because the trail made from the PSP ghosting ^^;

Story mode just covers the first 15 or so eps up until the Renji fight. During the credits roll the character you beat it with says some lines from a little later in the anime/manga.

Music is decent. The character select music is some vocal hip-hop that actually fits quite well. The stage music is meh. OP video is the first OP song, ED video is the one vocal song that they play in the show.

Basically shitty framerate, not so great controls, little screen, only 1p for the most part, long ass loading, horribly jaggy, crappy unlockables, six characters total = WTF did I buy this!?

Despite all that I sooooooooooooooooooo want them to make a proper sequel on a real system like PS2 or GC. The fighting engine is not bad and at least as good as the GC Naruto ones, and the cell-shading is pretty nice. If they did a sequel on a system (getting rid of loading/jaggies/control issues) and featured all the taicho/fuku-taicho + the main 6 from this game it would be a really really awesome anime-based fighter. But the PS2 Bleach game coming out is a hollow-fighting action game so....hopefully later this year or next year will see a real system fighter.

Even though Bleach is my 2nd favorite current manga behind One Piece, the game sucks and I can't see myself ever taking it out on a trip.

First Impression is a D-, this even tops the crappy DS games. Only thing saving it from an F is the OP movie.

SAY IT ISNT SO :(

Man, I was so ready to buy this game. Eighting is a great developer for anime fighting games, why did you have to screw this one up :(

IMPOSSIBLE!

I was *this*close to ordering it. I still kinda want to try it but eh,not worth it :|

Game = Ouch
Cover Art = Yummy

Thanks for the impressions. I expected more, even if this was an anime fighting game. The Bleach fan inside of me just prayed it could be near the recent Naruto fighting games.

Bloody Roar aside, i think they were a better shooter developer.

Not really Eighting's fault. This was an SCEJ rush job if I've ever seen one. Everything about the game feels rushed... and rushed to market.

I don't think Eighting screwed it up personally. I think the PSP screwed it up by not being a system designed for fighting games.

Like I said if Eighting ported the same game to a console and added more characters it would be as good as their GC Naruto series.

I can't tell why, but that is one nice boxart. The picture is not even that particularly nice...

Thanks to Bebpo's sacrifice, this game will now be forgotten:)

You could be right though Eighting also developed Tekken Advance which turned out pretty damn well on GBA.

Okay, the "I CAN'T DO TEH FIERBALLZ IN VAMPIRE CHRONICLE!!1111" nonsense aside, PSP is great for fighting games. The control layout works well, and I have no problems with Vampire Chronicle myself. If you mean because of the load times, well, that will improve with time.

So frame rate issues aside, would you say this game is basically just Naruto with Bleach characters?

I still have this game paid for, but I can still probably cancel it since they didn't ship it out today. Perhaps this was divine intervention. :)

BTW NCS said this:

"Bleach for the PSP follows the storyline of the animation and six characters from the series are playable including Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Uryu Ishida, Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Abarai Renji. The animation quality in the game is impressive and we've been pausing the game every now and then to admire the beautiful artwork. Game modes include a Story Mode for every character, Survival Mode, and a Time Attack Mode for some variety offset the small roster of playable fighters."

Heh.

Well the control isn't really my beef. It's that if you're gonna do a 3d fighter on PSP with a shitty framerate + horrible loading...don't bother. The complete jaggied look of the game doesn't help either. I guess we'll see when a major company attempts a 3d fighter.

CANCEL. It's kinda like Naruto except if the arenas were 1/4th the size and you don't have kawarimi or 1 button ougis. The way the reiatsu system works is kinda lame since only the person in the lead can do supers.

Ouch. I just cancelled it...that sounds terrible. :/

hmmmm, ok I guess you call things 'first impressions' because they don't always represent things accurately.

Well I've gone through story mode with all 5 characters and I change my impressions of the game to a C+. The battle engine is pretty darn good for being a canned combo system. I'd say it's a lot more enjoyable with more moves and ability to create combos than the Naruto games. Also the fighting animation is pretty nice. It just kinda sucks that your stuck playing against the CPU so you can't test things out (I think I've found several possible infinites so far ^^;)

The loading still sucks, and the frame-rate seems 30fps with slowdown. But it's ...kinda fun. Here's a breakdown of the characters:

Ichigo: normal attacks are kinda slow and special attacks are just low/high sword swipes which are also kinda slow. With no normal projectile he's left to do 8 way running but his attacks being slow stop him from having any quick pokes. His super #1 is a just projectile which is great, his super #2 is a counter-super and I could never get the cpu to hit me during it.

Ichida: Really good as he's fast with medium strength and has tons of projectiles. He has forward arrows, ground arrows (think Sagat), sky arrows, and a K' style dash behind the guy attack. You can even chain about 4 arrows in a row and if the cpu starts to 8 way run arround them you can go with any of his normal attacks that have good reach. His super is a dash which if hits the enemy fires arrows from all sides and does good damage. Best character of the starting 5 I think.

Orihime: Very projectile based character. Her normal attacks have short range and do weak damage, but she has all kinds of projectiles. She can throw fireballs from the sky, ground, lift a magic triangle from the ground below the enemy, and elbow the enemy with a magic triangle in front. Since the game allows you to hit a downed character for a few secs, she can end a combo with her ground triangle and then stomp on their head for another 5 hits while they are on the ground. Her super is a counter-super but it can also be used in combos and connect. It has her shoot a bunch of fireballs.

Chad: Slow but strong as hell. If it wasn't for the fast projectiles of Ichida/Orihime he would be the best character in the game. His normal attacks have good range and his special moves consist of a dragon punch an air counter attack and a huge fireball. The huge fireball does good damage and you can combo it into a bunch of things. His super is an uppercut combo followed by a fireball (which you can follow by another fireball). Good character but has a tough time against the quicker fireball throwers.

Rukia: Pretty well rounded character. Has medium range/ medium damage normal attacks and her special moves are various fireballs AND a move that binds the enemy. This bind move can hit a downed enemy, lifting them back up and kinda sets up an infinite possibly (I think they can break out of it with an air recovery). Her super #1 is a dash -> put a bunch of seals on the enemy and throw/explode them. Her super #2 is a slow dan-ish big fireball. Between her super #1 and her bind move she's a pretty decent character.

So it seems like Ichigo is the worst character in the game ^^;

Stop toying with my emotions! Now I am encouraged to take the plunge and just get it :(

Sucks that there are so few characters though, but I guess we'll have to wait for Bleach Gekito Ninja Taisen 2
...

Can't you jerks just release a complete game on the first round :(

About how much play time can one expect of the game? A couple of hours at most?

Yea. A few hours sounds about right. I'm just gonna keep playing until I unlock Renji and then try him out for a bit. I doubt a week from now I'll ever play this again. Survival mode could've been a fun mode to play on the go, but seriously 20 secs loading screen between fights is BS and makes me want to just turn it off and play something else.

hmm... i was buying every game on PSP, but it has to stop somewhere.

So, which Mahjong game is THE Mahjong game to own on PSP? :)

(Aren't there at least 2-3 already?)

(i am actually being serious here - i love it)

there is the Koei one (i inexplicably own the DS and PSP version)
the AI one
and the Konami one - MJFC

Mahjong Fight Club is the winner - it's actually very very good.

Thanks. If I ever find it for cheap or get this new job and have the cash to spare, maybe I'll pick it up. (I like playing Mahjong, but some idiot here in the US once called that tile matching game - Shanghai was the first - Mahjong. Everyone's been using that name (and variants) ever since, so when you think you're going to play a real Mahjong game... nope! sigh...)

yeah, my mother has "mahjong" on her PC - she offered me a game and lo-and-behold, it's shanghai.

I don't know how much I would like the Naruto GCN games if they weren't four player.

20 second load times is just crazy. Fighting games are supposed to be..I dunno..fast? :P

Thanks for those impressions mang, you convinced me not to import this game, I'll just wait until 9 months from now when they bring out the second one and give it twice the number of characters with improved graphics.

You said something about a PS2 one coming out? What is it a final fight type game ? that could actually work better with this games style , killing hordes of hollows etc.

Yea, there was a blurb in famitsu a while ago about the PS2 one. Basically it's Ichigo vs. Hollows in a straight out DMC style action game. Not much information besides that.
