I will go as far as to agree with you when you say that Nintendo is vastly overrated. I can't say much for their prior generation stuff, because (not counting Mario Kart 64 and 1080) I haven't played any of it after Super Mario 2. But this generation's games have been average to above average at best. Nothing stellar, nothing worthy of a million drooling cubites running around proclaiming Miyamoto to be God and Reggie to be his prophet. They're lucky to have Retro to keep up the appearance of having a first party lineup that can compete with Sony and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft. They don't have the lineup, of course, but Retro at least gives them something.
