Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

It's a combination of things. The advantage of AMOLED technology though is it doesn't need a backlight making it much more efficient overall.

Yeah but is there any way that Apple could have gone with a retina display in the iPad 3 if it were AMOLED? Wouldn't it be too expensive to include in a consumer tablet at $500?

I'm wondering why you think the display in the iPad is not an IPS display but rather a standard TFT panel.

Wasn't speaking of what LCD technology the ipad is using though. The ipad isn't branded 'retina' in any case.

The display of the iPhone 4 is manufactured by LG under an exclusive contract with Apple. It features an LED backlit TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch

I don't know what AMOLED has to do with anything, but Apple isn't going to be hitting up AMOLED until it gets more mature.

I'll gladly purchase an AMOLED HD Android phone but their is no denying that their are tons of issues with the technology as it is today.

I don't know why you're getting so hung up on the usage of the word "retina", I'm quite sure Sean knew exactly what he was referring to; we're going to be using the word retina in iPad/iPhone threads, get used to it.

AMOLED consumes over 3x more power than LCD on white backgrounds (because of the lack of backlight). Most webpages are white. iBooks are white.

Probably. I was only pondering it. I said in my original post it would be too expensive, and I'm not even sure Samsung are even ready to produce displays at that resolution and pixel density.

Has anyone done this to avoid costly cell plans:

Buy iPad + 3G.

Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 or 4S.

Move micro-sim from ipad to iPhone.

Pay month to month data on "iPad" and use apps like Textnow and Skype to provide your text and voice on your iPhone using the same sim.

Is this a doable concept to end up paying like $25-$30 per month instead of $80-$100?

I see. I assumed iPad in the iPad thread. (not trying to sound snarky)

I like to think that most people on gaf know what "retina screen" is meant to imply though.

Why do you think I am hung up on it? I simply misinterpreted what he meant. :|

I hope they go pentile, I want to see the reconciliation.

You might get your wish:

Samsung will unveil a prototype 10.1-inch, high-resolution LCD designed for tablets at the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Samsung claims the prototype is the first 300-dpi, high-resolution display in the 10.1-inch tablet format. While it is still a prototype, Samsung expects the screen to be commercially available for tablet applications later this year.

The screen is developed by Samsung subsidiary Nouvoyance and features its PenTile RGBW technology, which uses red, green, blue, and white subpixels to present high-resolution luminance information. The company claims the addition of the white subpixel, combined with increased subpixel width, makes PenTile RGBW panels about twice as "transmissive" as traditional red, green, and blue (RGB) color model LCDs found in most screens

I'm definitely looking forward to getting my iPad. I've been using my laptop (17" Sony Vaio) for websurfing while gaming (GameFAQs and YT walkthroughs when I get stuck) and watching Netflix in bed. Problem is that thing gets hot and is quite heavy.

I mean, I could hold out for my Macbook Air, but the idea of playing iOS games on that nice, big screen is so tempting.

The one I get depends on if the rumors of the Retina display are true. True = iPad 3, false = iPad 2.

It takes a special kind of Apple fanboy to justify buying a Mac desktop, laptop, and iPad in the span of six months.

Honestly I'm prepared for the announced resolution to be lower. I mean my desktop PC is pretty quick. It has a Radeon 5870 with a gig of memory and it can run the latest and greatest games on their highest or close to highest settings at 1900x1200. But it definitely gets a workout.

Getting any kind of respectable 3D performance out of an iPad at that resolution... I just don't see how that's gonna happen. Maybe it drops into a lower resolution mode when doing 3D acceleration and the 2048 stuff is only for lower intensity 2D stuff.

Honest question, but what utility does a cellular iPad have? Isn't your smartphone sufficient for on-the-go computing?

It seems to be rather popular, I'm just wondering which use-case I'm missing.

my grandpa has one as his only computer, was able to get rid of his home ISP. and he can take it anywhere and still be online.

Oh actually, just to answer your post as you seem so interested in what I have to say.

The screen is expected to require dual backlights or at least a more power hungry version which will definitely require a bigger battery to maintain the great 10 hour battery life.

I was merely pointing out that Super AMOLED plus would be more efficient in that respect. It isn't going to happen though, I was just pondering it.

Oh and the person you quoted was someone else not your friend 'sean'. I misinterpreted what he said. He simply said, "TFT? What?". Not an easy thing to interpret. Does that answer that part of your post as well? :p

I like having the unlimited plan for when I'm on the go, beats having to tether off my phone. It's especially useful when I'm in a hotel and I don't want to pay for their wifi.

That makes sense but I don't think they're going to allow the user to toggle what resolution games run at. If the game developer is able to get it to run smoothly at full resolution on the iPad3, then it'll probably have some special bullet point listing that feature (FullRetina/Full HD or something).

Pretty much the only reason people want the pixel bump is for PDF's and magazines though.

Hey guys, not specifically iPad related but when I buy Bluray + Digital Copy combo packs and register/download the iTunes version is the digital copy tied to my iTunes account? My HDD was wiped since I downloaded Wall-e on it and now when I access the iTunes store it shows up as normal price.

I hope so. I just don't see the need for such high resolution for 3D games. Does anyone consider Infinity Blade ugly on ipad2?

After having watched the iPhone4 / 4S, high PPI displays on handheld devices is where it's at for me, including web browsing which would be my primary usage.

It'll make text in general better but web pages are usually formatted to look decent enough around the iPad res. Text in pdfs and magazines can look really blocky unless you zoom in though.

Has it been confirmed anywhere that there will actually be a Wi-Fi only version of the new iPad? For some reason I've got the suspicion that the new iPad will be 3G or LTE only (both with Wi-Fi built in but not a Wi-Fi only iPad 3) with the iPad 2 Wi-Fi version becoming the only one available without data connectivity.

I wouldn't be surprised if they include LTE in all models kind of like how the 4S has GSM and CDMA connectivity.

There should be a WiFi only version, unless they don't want to hit their $500 price point considering the double-res screen and the bigger battery that should go along with it.

Im sure they'd still make a hearty profit at 500$ with the cell radio and GPS.

But of course, Apple being Apple, they won't throw anything in for free if they can get away charging for it.

You need to insert the "Digital Copy" CD if you have one and enter the code again.

It's such a crappy system.

Exactly. Their prices are working swimmingly for them right now. No need to rock the boat.

Officials at some of Apple’s suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has shown them screen designs for a new device with a screen size of around 8-inches, and said it is qualifying suppliers for it. Apple’s latest tablet, the iPad 2, comes with a 9.7-inch screen. It was launched last year.

Interesting

I wish there was a (jailbreak-free) way to turn an iPad into a Personal Hotspot. With LTE and a < $60 data plan, that'd be splendid.

iPad 2 price slash for a new entry level price
iPad nano with A6 dual core but current iPad 2 resolution mid price or for people who want a smaller / lighter / thinner size
iPad 3 high end retina / quad

Covers entire market and all prospective tablet buyers

I have plans to sell my iPad 2 to get a 3, but if they could make an 8 inch tablet with identical specfications to iPad 2, I might just get that purely for the weight saving. The damn things are too heavy, and a weight reduction would be just as appealing as a retina display.

Wouldn't be surprised at that.

Tablets are replacing laptops for many, so a more MacBook-type line up makes sense in the longer term.
