Apple needs to stop breaking old iOS devices with new iOS updates, seriously, if iPad 1 can't run iOS 5 properly then don't fucking release it for it.

My parents iPad 1 is sluggish as hell since i updated it to iOS 5.

Yup even my Mum has noticed it, complaining about Apps crashing and typing delayed. It's hard to explain to why her iPad all of a sudden got shit.

I've got my iPad 2 64GB 3G up for sale, should get about $800 for it. Dat Resale.

I wonder if formatting the iPad would help with speed. I plan on clearing mine out before selling it anyway.

Here's hoping.

Yeah, it sucks that iPad 1 was made more sluggish. I've been victim of it before - most notable iOS4 on iPhone 3G. There it sucked, because the only feature I seemed to get was folders.

But on iPad 1, I actually got a lot of functionality as trade off for the reduced responsiveness.

That said, they need to fix the music player for iPad.

Personally I have no issues with the performance of my iPad 1 on 5.0 with the exception of the browser crashing way more frequently (which is a serious problem).

Daisey's show was featured on NPR's "This American Life" in January and a listener named Mark Shields was so moved, he launched a petition drive online. Over 250,000 Apple users called on the company to build the first "ethical" iPhone, and protests were planned at Apple stores around the world.

It was around this time when Apple called me. They wondered if "Nightline" was interested in seeing their iPhone, iPad and MacBook final assembly lines at Foxconn during a first-ever audit by the Fair Labor Association. I said yes, very much, and immediately started imaging the reasons why they were offering such a scoop to me, of all people. Among the possibilities:

-I've said nice things about their products on the air.

-ABC News is owned by the Disney Corporation and Disney CEO Bob Iger serves on the Apple Board of Directors

-The Steve Jobs Trust is Disney's largest shareholder.

-They enjoy "Nightline."

It must be the last one, because the first three would have no bearing on my reporting and I'm pretty sure Apple knows it.

i'm not good with threads, did someone already make one?

True, but here are the selections you make, and what I picked:

Condition: Like New
Display Cracked?: No
Powers on?: Yes
All buttons working?: Yes
Back plate dented or scratched?: No
Audio Jack Fully Functional?: Yes
Dead Spots on the Display?: No
Is the WiFi working?: Yes

Original Box Included?: Yes

Alright., notice what I actually said about my iPad 2 above before sending in. Now look below and see what they sent back about the condition.

Inspected Product: Apple iPad 2 16GB Wifi (Black)

Audio Jack Fully Functional?: Yes

Notice how the only thing different is "Condition." How can the condition be "fair" when all the other categories are ok? No scratches, everything works, yet it is fair? How is it fair with no defects?

Well...up on eBay the iPad 2 goes! Looking to pull in ~$450 for my 32GB White Wi-Fi, but we'll see how bidding goes. Have the auction set to end Saturday mid-day which should allow it to end before a hypothetical Apple announcement of a new event on Tuesday.

I'm thinking this upcoming Tuesday would be the EARLIEST Apple would say anything, with the week after being the more likely time they will announce it.

Here's to hoping! I already miss my iPad and it's sitting right in front of me.

Just put it on Criagslist and meet in a common area with a large crowd. Ebay takes a pretty sizable bite off the top of the sale price, and then you have to factor in shipping and feedback hassles.

I don't trust Craigslist. Tried using it to sell my iPhone awhile ago and set-up a meet and the person no-showed and by the time it all was supposed to go down it was too late.

Meh on that noise!

Today I got the black silicon case for my OG iPad and I have to say, it looks really good in all black. I'd love an iPad with black aluminum on the back. Too bad it's such a pain to disable it, or I'd do it myself. So yeah, Apple. You've heard me, all black option for the iPad 3, I'll pay 50 extra for it.

I would never risk selling anything valuable on Ebay. Way too many scams and paypal/ebay does not give a fuck about the seller. Add on the fees from Ebay and Paypal, I rather risk getting stabbed in a McDonalds than deal with that shit.

I've sold around 20 or 30 things on Craigslist over the years. It's been fine for me. Sometimes it'll get aggravating dealing with people who are cheapskates but it's still with the minor hassle to me as I can get so much more cash than eBay or sites like gazelle.

One time I waited for a guy at a subway station and left after he was 20 minutes late and never showed up. I got an email from him 30 minutes later asking where I was. I told him he was late and he could still buy what he wanted but he had to add 20 bucks for wasting my time. He called me a "great top asshole" I called him a flake and went on with my life.

Not everything moves on there, though. Specialized items like high end headphones I have bought and sold recently require a site like head-fi with knowledgable buyers.

Definitely would rather not use eBay, but I just don't trust Craigslist for something like this that is time sensative. Sounds like I may have just gotten unluckily burned which is tainting the whole thing for me, but I've yet to list something on eBay and have it not sell (a whole one item so far) so in my mind it's eBay: 1, Craigslist: 0.

The fees and whatnot are tolerable considering I'll still be getting anywhere from $100-$200 more on eBay than I would from a site like Gazelle.

You've always sold these high-end things on eBay?

Paypal scams are rampant (and PayPal supports the buyer 99% of the time).

Older iPads just get passed down in my family rather than sold to someone else. Same thing is probably going to happen once the iPad 3 comes out. :p

Haven't been hit by a paypal scam, but again I've only sold one item and it went smoothly. Would generally stick with people who have a decent history on eBay.

But you guys are doing a pretty good job of messing with my head!

I almost got scammed by someone with a good history. I sold them probably around 150 DVDs and shipped them out without a problem. About 3-4 weeks later, I got a message from them saying they did not receive the DVDs, and said they either wanted a full refund or proof I sent them. I thought I lost the tracking slip so I thought I was out $350. I eventually found the slip and sent them the number proving it was delivered. They promptly apologized saying they "misplaced" the box. Now, they could of been telling the truth, but I think they were hoping I no longer had the tracking info and could not prove I sent the item. Also, fuck ebay/paypal fees.

I've actually been scammed twice on ebay. granted, i've bought around 100 little things on there but I got burned twice on high price things.

once when trying to sell an old white macbook. I didn't have good separation between my account name and email address so someone ran a complex (to me) scam trying to sell my macbook in another sale for a cheap price where it sold. I still don't understand how it all happened

ebay caught this and cancelled my sale. I then changed all my passwords and email addresses tied to ebay.

then sold the macbook on CL a few days later in person.

second, I got scammed trying to buy a first gen iPhone before they were available in canada. some company had a bunch of fake positive feedbacks and were selling iphones, jailbroken, for around 700. then they closed up shop after they sold a few dozen of them and never delivered.

paypal got me my money back after a month but that was really annoying.

and, sure enough, a couple weeks later, i found a guy on CL who was selling iphones. Dude met me at work and everything and helped me set it up and made sure it worked. I paid him and was on my way. good service

I find that i can get a feel for how a CL deal will go down these days just from reading the first email from the prospective buyer. If they form complete sentences and don't try the lame "I'll give you half of what you're asking for and pay you CASH tonite", then it'll typically go down well. if they use a series of half formed sentences like "ipad??" or "how much" with NO OTHER TEXT, then I don't bother pursuing it.

Just ask to meet at a Mcdonalds or, in my case, I always offer to meet them in the lobby of my building, if they're up for it. It's easier for me and I'm not asking them to come inside my apartment, which might get some people nervous since we are all strangers.

Solid advice there. I closed my eBay account a LONG time ago. I do Craigslist, and if that doesn't work out, I'll put it on Amazon.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to pick out the good from the bad on Craigslist. Usually if people say something like "is your item still available?" without any reference to what you are selling then they'll likely email you back with some scam email follow-up after you respond. Most of the time, you get solid responses with people. I've had such great experiences on both Craigslist and Amazon Marketplace that I don't see how eBay is still in business.

I tried selling my iPad 2 16GB on the dutch version of craigslist, got this reply:
The guy was using a french email adres too.

Hello,

I am willing to buy your item if you can arrange for shipping to my new studio in Spain. I will pay €450,00 EUR including the shipping cost too through TNT/TPG POST OFFICE . If this offer is acceptable to you, go ahead and let me have your PayPal email address so i can make the payment

You can set up PayPal account today via WWW.PayPal.NL Only if you don't have

Am waiting for your reply soon
Regards.

A Spanish dude using a french email adres to buy iPads on a dutch auction site seems pretty legit.

This may sound crazy, but there's a trading site in New Zealand called "trademe". It's basically an auction site. I might be describing craigslist/ebay here - I honestly don't know since I don't really use either, but trademe is basically a site that sets up buyers and sellers, for the most part.

Users create an account with money. To post an auction, you pay a small fee depending on the item, and any additional fees if you want them to be bolded, or have a specific close time etc.

When an auction closes, trademe releases email addresses of the buyers and sellers (and also claim a commission). Users then close a deal either by swapping banking details (yeah, I know this is unheard of in the US) and transfer money directly and ship, or otherwise agree to meet somewhere in person if you are in the vicinity.

It's a great site, and mostly things work out.

I'd love to sell my iPad 1 but I can't because the ios5 upgrade last year screwed it up.

I'm one of the small percentage of iPad 1 users who updated to ios5 and now safari constantly crashes for no apparent reason multiple times per day. You can google 'safari crashing on iPad 1 after ios5 update' and read all about it. There's a pretty hefty thread at the official apple forums from users with the problem and user-generated proposed solutions but none of them have worked for me. Apple still won't acknowledge the problem and I'm surprised they haven't deleted the thread on their forums. Ive done a factory restore and about 1000 troubleshooting steps and no luck. I also have to run with all iCloud stuff turned off so that my iPad doesn't run at almost a complete crawl.

The thing that drives me the most nuts is the iPod app... Why does it take 5 damn seconds for the song position to update before I can navigate my song list... It is so damn irritating.

Edit: hahaha safari crashed when I hit submit reply... Oh apple

I've had one good experience with Craigslist selling an iBook G4, after that I've had nothing but idiots.

Like 80% of the people offered me half the asking price. Finally someone intelligent sounding contacts me and agrees to pay the asking price, but he doesn't show up. Re-scheduled again twice and he failed to show both times.

You can definitely get a lot more money and don't have to deal with eBay/PayPal fees, but it can be a huge pain in the ass to sell stuff on Craigslist. YMMV.

that does sound quite a bit like ebay. it’s the bank account detail changes that is still surprising to us, ha!

although, I have to say that electronic money transfers amongst canadian banks has been super convenient. all you need is an email and a bank account and you get money transfer that’s much faster than paypal and with no fees. it’s not the same as the sharing of banking data but it’s much better than using paypal, which is pretty much standard on ebay.

Offering to pay asking price is for chumps- a large part of the appeal of buying on craigslist is the chance to haggle to a lower price.

Personally I've had some decent experiences on CL mixed with some bad ones, mostly involving no shows. I HATE that shit but I guess it's all part of the game.

When it's still in the e-mail/phone call stage, sure.
If they want to haggle on price at the meet, I tell them to fuck off, quote-unquote.
If they reconsider, they can still buy, but for more than the asking price.
Problem? Again, fuck off.

Oooo, sounds like iPad 1 is being quietly put to pasture iPhone 2G-style.
But it's too soon to be doing that. So many people bought ipad1's and this isn't some subsidized phone you can upgrade every 2 years for a couple hundred bucks.

If they truly cripple everyone's $500-850 purchase after two years, people will eventually move to android tablets.

I think there are a bunch of posts "I sold my ipad 2 for ~$400" in this thread

They will go to android tablets that go out of date and unsupported months after release and get new versions released multiple times a year?

I may have mentioned this before, but I had two craiglsist encounters where the dudes did not bring enough cash to pay the agreed-upon price.

one was for an iMac, I shrugged my shoulders, said “that’s too bad” and showed him to the door. then it knocked again 30 seconds later and he miraculously produced the extra hundred dollars from his pocket and took the iMac away.

the other story makes me laugh. A dude came by my place with his girlfriend to pick up some winter tires I was selling. We take them off my balcony and then he tells me he didn’t bring enough money. Like, he wasn’t surprised he was missing money - he just chose to not have the remaining fifty dollars with him. I guess he thought that I would just give in since we had gone to the trouble of taking the tires off the balcony.

well, no, I told him that this was “unfortunate” and that he couldn’t have them. His girlfriend is shooting fucking lasers from her eyes at him. You can tell she was pissed how he had dealt with this and wasted her time. I guess he had told her in the car on the way over how his plan was gonna save him some money and that she should let him take care of this.

anyway, I show them to the door and he’s saying he might come back tomorrow with more money. I go, sure.

then a few minutes later he calls me up and say “my girlfriend had a better idea. we could just stop at the bank machine now and take the tires away”

“sounds like a good idea”

I just loved the awkwardness of those two encounters. dudes who wanted to play cute with money at the last minute and both of them having to humble themselves and play by the rules at the end.

we rich, need to trickle down our wealth

^^^

LCfiner i would of just pulled a king Solomon and said you can buy three tires with that money.

I thought this was going to be a "service" payment by the girlfriend. Good read though.

I'd be weak. I'd get ruined by that shit because if someone pulled that on me with this iPad...any delay in selling it could be a loss of over a hundred bucks.

I think Apple really fucked up by not putting 512mb ram in iPad 1. If you look at the iPhone 4, it still runs really well on iOS 5. The lack of ram really hurts the iPad 1 when it comes to multitasking. Really stupid move by Apple.

I was trying to come up with some good reasons, but then my browser crashed.

So yeah, fuck Apple.

It sucks, not only does it really limit iPad 1 as we move forward with software updates it also holds back Apps as many app developers will develop around iPad 1's limitations.
yeah, if they don't put at least 1GB of RAM in the iPad 3 i'm gonna flip my shit and do something crazy like buy an Android tab.
