Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

It has a trackpad on the back which is getting mixed reviews and appears to be less useful than people had hoped.

On Gaf, I only remember Gofreak championing the feature (or, at least, not being as skeptical about it as most were). It always seemed like a non-starter to me for lots of reasons.

It just felt like a stupid addition. I know, it is better to have more features than less, but it just doesnt interest me at all. Seems to be the general consensus also.

It's as bad as we thought it would be, but it seems like devs can just ignore it.

I don't see how it is a bad feature. Beats having your fingers cover the screen.

you can’t actually use it to select items because you can’t see your finger. it is not a replacement for direct touch.

at best, you can use it for some simple gesture swipes. non critical features for a few games.

at worst, simply trying to hold the vita in your hand without accidentally triggering the back panel will cramp up your hands since the grips are small and your fingers want to rest on the panel.

it’s an ergonomic issue that potentially makes it “bad” and not just ”useless"

I could see a back touch that relies on very simple "gripping" motions with your left or right hand being fairly intuitive for binary choices and other simple UI decisions on an iPad.

What is he going to say? "Yeah, we've got some stuff coming out, I guess."

Do you think, for example, that he would use language like 'stuff that will blow your mind' to describe something like the 4S, or simply spec-bumped laptops/desktops? No, I doubt it. It confirms there's some major shit coming down the pipeline, either major redesigns to existing products or completely new products. Pretty much everyone already assumed this, but its nice to have somewhat of a confirmation that big things will happen soon.

Yeah, he would. This is the same company that throws around the word "magical". I love my macbook and ipod touch( and in 1 week an iphone 4s), but lets be honest, hyperbole is one of Apples strong suits.

i was shot once and I had an ipod in my chest pocket and it deflected the bullet. I also found $20 later that day. shits magic yo

Would you guys still buy it if its the iPad 2S and not the iPad 3?

If the only change for an iPad 2S was to add a retina display I'd eagerly buy it. If Apple beefs up everything (quad core processor, 2 GB RAM, Siri whatever) but doesn't improve the display then I won't bother.

flip that around and thats me.

More ram for the browser? More power for games? Sure yes please.

Only retina? I'll get an ipad 2 cheap

if they drop the price of the ipad 2 by $100, which will be the bigger queue - the one for the ipad 3, or the one for the cheaper ipad 2, now affordable to a massive additional audience?

I have no idea how it could be practically implemented, but a form of back touch page-scrolling would be so damn nice.

While rear touch isn't great for some games, I'm putting that down to it being shoe-horned in at Sony's request. That'll calm down and be used more sparingly in later games.

I'm actually surprised Sony don't support the rear touch panel in the web browser. Scrolling like you describe would be really nice to have.

I hoping for Intel Ivy Bridge and I would like a matte screen instead of the current gloss one.

Ivy bridge should be a nice bump. CPU not so much, but the GPU is supposed to be a nice step forward, meaning decent(ish) gaming on the airs.

Why do people constantly think Apple (or Sony in their consoles) are going to throw large amounts of RAM in there? The "wish list" always seems to overshoot the specs by double.

iPad 3 will probably have 1GB RAM, not 2.

How will you know? Apple never reveals specs like RAM. That info isn't known till after the device already comes out and is taken apart. By the time you know what the RAM is it will have been out already and the wait time on back-ordered iPad 3's will last quite a while.

So Tom's hardware this morning is reporting that Qualcomm will not be releasing a Quad-Core Snapdragon processor until Q4, 2012, instead focusing on reducing power draw of 3G/4G LTE devices.

This to me says there is probably no chance of seeing a quad-core iPad 3 on March 7th.

I don't see the connection.

It was never going to be powered by a snapdragon chip anyway.

Quick question. I've read on macrumours that the expected announcement date is March 7th. How soon after, is the iPad 3 expected to go on sale? How does Apple normally approach this? Also does it normally launch in the UK the same time as the US?

Apple designs their own chips, holmes. They work with a vendor like Samsung to fab them.

They bought a chip company back in 2009 or so.

Going by past experience, US sales will start March 16th. But that's just going by previous experience. Who knows what could actually be the case this time.

So Apple will introduce a new dock connector with the iPhone 5 and the new iPad won't have it?

Pre-order cancelled.

they'll gladly sell you a dongle adapter for 29.99.

I figure at some point they'll wan to minimize the size of the dock adapter. maybe it'll be this year with the iphone 5. maybe they'll put it off longer. at some point, both this adapter and the diameter of 3.5 mm headphone jacks will be limiting device thinness.

I think there's a certain point at which thinness is no longer a good thing. I think the focus should be on figuring out how to cram more electronics and more battery into the phone, not on shrinking the device. I think the iPhone 4S is pretty much exactly the right size for me, and I don't want it to get larger or smaller, just more efficient.

The only Qualcomm connection to the iPad/iPhone is the radio.

As I can be quite impatient, i'd probably buy it first and decide whether it holds web pages long enough to satisfy and if not, then return it or sell it on

But as I'm in the UK there will probably be time to hear US impressions for a few days which will hopefully reassure me.

Don't care about the amount of RAM, just want 'the magical internet device' to actually be, you know, 'magical' when browsing more than one page on the internet

They bought a chip company back in 2009 or so.

My point was that I would assume Apple would be making a similar decision, especially combined with the A5X pictures. I wouldn't imagine Apple to have THAT much magic fairy dust that would turn their A9 into a quad-core that does LTE and terrific battery life over what Qualcomm could do.

And yet no one will notice when it comes to actually using it.

Have you ever used an iPad before? Or are you just spitting what you think you should be saying? Rhetoric? Jeez Louise. Not every thing Apple makes is without fault.

Apple tends to lean towards balance between components for a smooth user experience.

I really don't think they will double the resolution, upgrade the CPU/GPU and leave 512mb in it. It's too much of a bottleneck. I don't think it will have any higher than 1gb though

The Krait core is bigger than a Cortex A9, and quad A9 devices are already on the market. Completely irrelevant.

That said, I'd still much prefer dual A15.

Edit: To explain, Qualcomm are unique amongst major ARM licensees in that they have an instruction set license and design their own cores. Their Krait core (branded Snapdragon S4) is more like the A15 than the A9.

Haha, that would be awesome. The imagination of him dropping the mic in some battlerap-behaviour kills me.

To summarize, the image uploader said iPad 3 (or whatever Apple chooses to call it) shipments are already coming from China for delivery to three of America’s biggest airports. The poster also said the initial deliveries would begin March 9. In typical Apple fashion, the cargo flight organizers are demanding unusual security for the cargo.

Next: Sources said Apple could take iPad 3 pre-orders. Some might remember Apple did not take pre-orders for the iPad 2, but it did for the original iPad. Sources also hinted that the pre-orders could (based on supplies) begin March 7, but they may only begin a few days later. For the iPhone 4S, Apple announced the product on Oct. 4, but it only started taking pre-sales on Oct. 7.

Interestingly, we also heard Apple could gear up to launch two major products in March. The iPad 3 would be the first product, but this second product is currently unspecified. A new Apple TV box could be this product. We heard supplies of the Apple TV are severely constrained, but it is hard to see a reason for this besides an imminent refresh. We’ve been hitting hard with evidence for the past few months that suggest a new Apple TV is in development, and what better time to launch it than alongside the latest and greatest mobile iOS device? Its 1080P video streaming and a faster chip were both rumored, and we have presented our own evidence for Bluetooth 4.0 support.

Additionally, our sources pointed to the discontinuation of all iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G models and all iPad 2 Wi-Fi-only models (except the black and white 16GB units—at least initially) when the iPad 3 launches. This would refute rumors of Apple launching the Retina Display-packing iPad 3 as an extension of the iPad 2 line, and it would seem to back up rumors of Apple keeping the 16 GB iPad 2 around at a lower price point. The iPad 2-model discontinuation information originated from Apple product supply checks.

This would lead me to believe iPad 1 is being quietly retired.

Not sure how this changes iPad 2 used prices or the Retina-only and Retina+nonRetina apps.
